IIRC, the time pro will be counted as completed seasons, meaning next summer Russo would be eligible to be taken.

Every team will be looking to do that.

Russo won't be eligible , next season with Grand Rapids will be his 2nd year pro so he's safe if expansion comes in 2017-2018

And I don't think every team will be looking to move pieces now , surely teams will get a jump start but they still can play next season with the players and trade some body's before the expansion draft , heard on the radio today about how the pens were gonna trade fleury because of Matt Murray and they were saying its bs cause they are in no hurry cause they still have next season which is true

Technically if we wanted to we can keep both Tatar and nyquist next season and see what happens and trade one after next season

Likely scenario is one will be packaged for help on defense since that's our biggest concern

Teams that feel like they have a shot at contending won't trade away their depth.

Right. At least not until right before the expansion draft..

And Dickie, you may be right.. That's just the way I interpreted it. That's one of the flaws of Twitter. I'm sure we'll have more information soon.

And by the time we're right before the expansion draft, unless teams happen to have open slots to protect players, there won't be much in the way of buyers.

From what I've gathered from various sources, a lot of players who would be completing their 2nd pro season next year have been labeled as exempt from the draft - ie: Larkin, McDavid, Ehlers, etc. I think it's a case of playing 2 full seasons or fewer and not needing protection. I'm not sure there's any concrete information on whether it's "you've played two full seasons, so now you're eligible" or "you've only played two full seasons, you're exempt".

If this is correct, I'm wondering how that applies to players who may have played a some pro games at the end of the 2014-15 season. Teams like to bring their junior players up to their AHL teams on tryout contracts once their respective junior teams are eliminated. It doesn't impact their "rookie" status, but I'm curious how it might be applied here.

Right.. Unless the player being traded is better than whoever the receiving team would otherwise protect. (Trouba for example)

I think we'll see a few pretty decent sized trades.. Hopefully :P

Easy on paper. Plus I wouldn't keep z on the first line when his body clearly can't keep up

It's always easy on paper. As for Stamkos, even with his health history you have to take a shot at signing someone of his skill level. But I don't see how that's possible for us given that he is likely going to get a Toews/Kane-sized contract.

---

On another note - have I missed some important updates in regards to expansion? Last I heard we were still multiple years away. I'm not saying Holland shouldn't be planning out hypotheticals, but allowing the shadow of something that's probably 3-5 seasons away to dictate roster decisions now seems premature to me, unless I missed something pretty big.

Last I heard the draft will be next summer

When I last kept up with things, I was told teams would get at least a full year's notice. Given that we don't have any vote or even confirmed markets for new teams yet - and no GM meetings any time soon - I would be pretty surprised if that were the case. I think we could use another year or two to figure out which of our young guys we want to keep, although just about every team probably feels the same way. If it is after next season, I don't know why we haven't heard more.

I don't want to see Larkin or AA on the wing next season. They are future centers and need to be playing there. I agree with limiting Zetterbergs ice time though. in the scenario above I'd but Zetterberg with AA and Bertuzzi, Tatar with Larkin and Mantha, and Radulov with Stamkos and Abby. But honestly I don't really see us signing stamkos, so its a moot point.

100% agree with the center thing. Even if Holland pulled a rabbit out of his hat and manages to land Stammer; Larkin, AA, and disney.com need to round out the centers. Time to move Hank to the wing on the second or third line. We need him with gas in the tank when the playoffs come. Not out of it.

And getting stamkos will give us headaches down the road

Stamkos gets 10 per and gets 75 pts ... Then 50-60 pt guys are gonna be demanding 7 per

Plus stamkos has blood clot issues which can be a problem down the road so I wouldn't even think of bringing him here , if we're signing someone to 10 per it better for a number 1 defensemen

Do we still want Stamkos with his recent health history. I've been back and forth.

I don't -- at least not for Stamkos' price tag. I want Backes even less and that strikes me as more likely than Stamkos happening. I'm also in the sign Okposo camp.
