Why wouldn't the Islea just trade Hamonic for Trouba, and why would the Jeta do that?

I guess maybe for the same reason Hamonic wants to play near home, so does Trouba? Not that he has control over where he goes, but teams tend to tRade away unhappy players now a days. Dunno, other than that, I got nothing.

Hamonic isn't going anywhere. He retracted his trade request.

Oh, didn't know that. Nevermind!

We're in a pretty s***ty transition to be honest. I know in time things will be better, but Datsyuk dropping the ball on us and Zetterberg's decline does screw us pretty bad for next season. I'm only speaking of next season btw.

Things a top team needs:

good to elite goaltender

number one center

number defenseman

Let's assume Danny D. is close to a number one he still needs someone that can keep up with him and then you need a number one center...Especially since now Eichel, Matthews and Puljujarvi will be in the same division..It's kind of a crap situation and there is only one option to make it better but that player might not even want to come to a declining aging team.

Aging team. Lol. If anything, were a team thats probably too young to be considered a contender

They might even re-sign Richards and make him 2C before they make AA 2C to be honest.

I can see this. Blashill is a lot like Babs he expects a lot out of his centermen but mostly safe defensive play before before offense. Richards isn't great defensively, mostly because of his skating, but he's not going to make careless plays with the puck that we might see more from AA if he starts getting a lot of minutes

It's frustrating, especially since we struggle to score but I understand this philosophy and we see more centermen in the league like Toews and Kopitar having more team success then guys like Duchene and maybe a reason Stamkos doesn't play centre for Cooper

I disagree with the bolded. Richards was a turnover machine and play killer for large parts of many nights. Every now and then he would have the wiley veteran play but he was also a hindrance to the team. I really hope he doesn't come back.

I don't believe you need some magic recipe to win a Cup. There are far too many intangibles to be formulaic about it. Look at St. Louis, who just trounced Chicago and Dallas despite having Jori Leterha as a top line center and Brian Elliott in goal.

Hell you could even argue that Chicago, all during their Cup runs, only had one out of three top center, goalie, OR defenseman. Meanwhile, Los Angeles probably has all three and missed the playoffs last year and got waxed this year.

Acting like landing an elite center, to the exclusion of other parts, makes us closer to contention ignores the fact that tons of top centers don't have Cups. Thornton, Spezza, Seguin, Stamkos, Sedin, Backstrom, have zero cups between them.

Conversely, our only recent cup win saw zetterberg on the wing, and our three best players were Franzen, Z, and the much maligned Osgood.

In my opinion its better to have a disproportionately good team, not a disproportionately good player. Signing a guy like Stamkos at 10 million all but ensures we can't address other needs.

I think everybody has their idea of the best team and their makeup. Me personally, I feel you need good centers that are defensively responsible first and foremost. Having a guy like Kopitar, Bergeron and Z + D in their prime is ideal. I don't think a great team has to have a 50 goal scorer but the goals have to come from somewhere. That could come from elite wingers, quality depth or high scoring defense.

On D I think us having a defence group like Washington's is most likely. Not outstanding skill wise but very well balanced. I personally lean towards d men like Weber, Suter and Petrianglo over guys like Subban and Karlsson. Although I think Hedman was the best defensemen in the NHL this year

I think come playoff time we are usually seeing the more defensively responsible teams going deep more consistently imo

How is AA ever supposed to learn the defensive game at center ice if he never plays? We are not cup contenders, it's time to move kids into the spots they need to be and have our coaches make them better. That's part of the job. If you have a strong system, you don't need every player to an ace defensively. We couldn't score to save our lives this year, that was our main problem. So get the kids who know how to score into the lineup, let them do what makes them successful and over time develop their defensive games.

It's official... Quincey and Richards will not return

Detroit Red Wings to part ways with Kyle Quincey, Brad Richards http://on.freep.com/27DL6Ch via @freep

I mean, call me a pessimist, but I'm not sure it's "official" just yet. I definitely think Richards is gone, but...

General manager Ken Holland told the Free Press today that he told "Brad Richards and Kyle Quincey that I definitely won't sign them before July 1, if at all."

I'm having flashbacks of July 2014, where Holland struck out on Stralman, Niskanen and Boyle, then decided to lock-up KFQ on July 2nd. If Holland's targeting guys like Yandle, Goligoski or Campbell and strikes out, I hope he just allows Ouellet/Sproul to join the roster.

In fact, I'd rather Ken not sign any of those guys, considering we've already got 15M tied up in Green, Kronwall and Ericsson as it is...

Richards was never coming back for another year so that one is whatever. Quincey has value but not enough value to warrant the kind of money he will probably get on the open market. I was always indifferent on Q but he had a pretty good year.

Free agency shouldn't even be a thought this year for a defenseman. Quincey should and hopefully will sign with another team, and no one else should be brought in, other than a top pair guy via trade...

I do wish we were able to part with Ericsson and keep Q, however.

Wings not going to resign Quincy?!?!

This was my initial reaction as well, but if Holland is serious about bringing in a defensman (and I don't know if he is), someone has to make way. Quincey happens to be a free agent right now so the timing is right.

Ya, don't get too excited yet...

Thursday that Red Wings GM Ken Holland has told free agents-to-be Brad Richards and Kyle Quincey that he definitely wont sign them before July 1, if at all,

It's nice that the chance is there, but he says not before July 1. Which means he will explore UFA, they may be a backup plan if they are still unsigned.
