We did trade Brad Stuart's rights to San Jose in 2012 for Andrew Murray and a 2014 7th round pick (Alexander Kadeykin). I just wish Holland would pull off trades like this more often. Kadeykin likely won't ever become a Red Wing and most 7th round picks don't ever make the NHL, but it's better than letting decent to good players walk for nothing...

Yeah the only thing I can think of is there isn't enough interest most of the time. Goligoski must just be a guy that Arizona had on their radar and thought would receive a lot of interest on the open market? Who knows what goes on behind the scenes..

The reason we never trade away players rights is its because it's the ken holland way ... He's way too loyal and is always thinking , we'll leave the door open incase

Helm already said he's resting free agency, if a team thinks they can sign him then trade his rights and if he's available to sign and we can land him at a reasonable shot then do so , until then pick up that 5th round pick (mrazek as a 5th rounder, so you never know)

Helm knows this will probably be his best chance at getting the most money possible in his career and I can see a place like Dallas with Jim Nill knowing how valuable he can be maybe fetching a 5 yr 20 million type offer , which we shouldn't pay

Anyways point is he's almost as good as gone , trade his rights and get some picks

It has to the situation when negotiations completely fail (with a gap that can't be brindged) and the player hasn't stated public that they will test free agency.

In the case of Filpula, I think we were really close in negotiations (there were some saying that Fil came back to accept our offer, but we had already signed Weiss) and wanted to leave the door open for him to sign. I don't recall their being a great demand for Hudler.

If Helm says that the money isn't close to what he wants, then we could look into it. I don't think there's that much benefit to having an extra 7th round pick, though. We seem to be good at finding college players and undrafted others, and unsigned prospects if we want more prospects. These guys (Nosek, Hicketts, Glendening, Russo) have as much of a chance to make it as someone in the 7th round.

I think it really only matters for higher value guys that would bring a higher round pick. Filpula could have maybe brought a 5th in, but we haven't let many high value guys go. Maybe Hossa was a situation where we should traded his rights since we were sure we weren't going to sign him.

I'd take Nielsen. Contrary to what people say we still need vets, just vets that can play or bring a certain dynamic. Our vets are currently just washed up.

Yea we won 4 cups with having a largely veteran core. Datsyuk, Z, and Kronwall just hit the proverbial wall this year.

I guess a similar package as I'd give up for Trouba, but if it's one or the other it's Trouba for me.

Yep I'd say the same. Pursue Trouba and Lindholm aggressively and be prepared to pay up as they are worth it. Any of these will be superstar caliber defenders soon, if they already aren't.

yup. arizona'a gm said he was one of the first targets on his radar when he was hired.

with the 5 day free agent interview period now, trading for a player's rights is a waste of assets imo

I agree, which is what makes it so impressive that Nill is able to get a 5th round pick from a team for a player they were going to let walk in a couple weeks time anyway..

i think it has more to do with a young, new gm wanting to make his mark rather than nill convincing him to take a 5th rounder

Do you think Chayka would like to make his mark on the Coyotes with a big, stay at home Swedish defenseman?... I mean Ericsson would be the perfect fit on the top pair with Ekman-Larsson...

nope not with that contract.

not to mention ericsson has known chronic hip issues that are only going to get worse and cause him to be even more of a pylon than he already is.

I know it's just a rumor but if Malkin goes to Chicago I'll tear my hair out. Chicago is what the Wings used to be. I'd love to have Malkin here.

That rumour makes no sense. If malkin wanta out of pittsburg because he wants to be the guy as the rumour suggests, than why would he want to go to chicago where there is already kane and toews? If anything he would be more likely to want to go to detroit where he really would be the guy.

But he just won another cup and just had a kid. I dont think he wants to go anywhere.

Saw that the Wings are meeting with Datsyuk tonight and will prolly make the announcement if he is officially leaving for Russia sometime tomorrow. Then I hope they move quickly to trade Datsyuk's contract. As much disappointment Holland has given us the last few off seasons, I do have some hope this year. Usually all the rumor mills say things like "Holland doesn't want to make a move unless it really improves the team" and "he isn't likely to make a big splash." This year we seem to be in the conversation for any big name out there and I think he is going to actually be aggressive and roll the dice for once. But Holland has hurt me before. He has hurt me before....
