Do people really think Stamkos is the 3rd best player in the league? I still think Crosby, Ovi, Malkin, Seguin, Benn, Kane are all better then him.

Can we at least agree they're all very close? We can rank them however but I'd consider them all on the same plane, except Seguin and Benn. Haven't seen them play to know if they're legit or just having a hot year like a Heatley or something.

Maybe teams were going hard after Yandle. We aren't privy to the back room conversations GMs have. I can only imagine Florida really needed him and some other teams were getting close. Maybe they felt four extra days could seal the deal. Though I agree in general, trading for rights seems like a waste.

Do you think Seguin is there too? I think he is.

Yeah I think he is. Seguin definitely one of the top elites. To be honest after Crosby and Malkin all the centers are hard to judge year by year. It seems like on paper Seguin is actually better than Stamkos and Tavares. I don't watch him as much so I don't know but you do raise a good point. But somewhere last year he seems to have overtaken Stamkos in the analytics department. Crazy how these guys come out of no where. Seguin and Benn are basically the new Datsyuk and Zetterberg just by looking at these offensive numbers. (Defense wise/ 200 foot play wise I don't think we'll ever see a duo better than prime Hank and Pav though)

No teams are allowed to make contact with him till July 1st. But one benefit to trading for his rights besides being able to discuss a contract with him is to have a chance to sign him before the bidding goes up when everyone has a shot at him. So they prolly sign him cheaper than they would be able to on July 1st.

Well, if the question is "Are Tyler Seguin and Jamie Benn among the best players in hockey?" then the answer is yes, unequivocally.

Seguin's point totals for the last three seasons, in chronological order:

  • 84 (80 games played)
  • 77 (71)
  • 73 (72)

Benn's point totals for the last three seasons, in chronological order:

  • 79 (81)
  • 87 (82)
  • 89 (82)

If that isn't elite, I dunno what is.

(Seguin put up 67 points in 81 games for the Bruins in the 2011-12 season. And he was drafted second overall. So I wouldn't say he's come out of nowhere. I think Benn is the much bigger surprise, as he was drafted 129th overall.)

Actually you're only half right. Teams are allowed a one week interview process prior to July 1st, in order to speed up free agency day

So, Sami Vatanen is off the market, the Avs have said they won't be trading Tyson Barrie (and I doubt they'd trade with us anyway), and, perhaps most disappointing of all, it's sounding like the asking price for Hampus Lindholm would be the kind of outstanding and proven young talent that we simply do not have at this time, aside from maybe Larkin. Think Leon Draisaitl or Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. I believe Athanasiou and Mantha have the potential to be that kind of player, but they're totally unproven at the NHL level.

Cam Fowler would come cheaper, but I'm not sure he'd be worth it...

I always say that the names in the rumor mill are not the only players that can be acquired via trade. There are always good defensemen out there. Anyone can be had, for the right price.

...But I'm starting to think we're probably going to focus on the forward group this summer. Keith Yandle is legit, Jason Demers (UFA) is underrated, and Kevin Shattenkirk might be obtainable, and we should consider all of them and many more. But, personally, I'm more concerned about our center situation right now. We need to go all-in for Stamkos, that goes without saying, but I think we should also be looking at Martin Hanzal and/or maybe a sleeper like Zemgus Girgensons (who I think has the potential to be a very good centerman in this league, though, admittedly, his numbers -- surface and underlying -- don't really support that. Hence "sleeper.")

We can't fix all or problems in one off season since we have so many. I agree we need a top defender or two, but if we can improve the forward group then that's what we need to do and fix the defense when we can.

Was reading an article today, who gets the next "A" as assistant captain now that Pav is gone?

Can only be Abdelkader. Our best and toughest Winger and a true leader. Great work ethic. Local.

extended an olive branch?

...by threatning to do everything possible in the NHL to stop him and ruining any other opportunities he might had.

That's an olive branch coming out of the barrel of a gun.

Bishop would make the flames so much better ha.. Wonder what they'd have to give up.

Holland has probably talked to any team in need of a goalie and they all have a plan A that isn't Howard. Him making the argument for keeping Howard is probably a combination of that type of knowledge mixed with trying to get mrazek signed as low as possible.
