Ohhhh, THAT'S your point... That wasn't clear the last 500 posts you've made regarding Helm since he was signed 25 days ago...

Holland proved with this signing that Helm IS part of this teams future, and no, none of the kids you're talking about bring the same element Helm does, maybe with the exception of Athanasiou. Want to b**** about contracts and players taking up roster spots that aren't part of the future? How about Miller, Ott and Vanek... Helm is here for the long haul and you might as well get used to it... Or maybe we (myself in particular) should just get used to your constant b****ing, because hey, that's what you do... Same with Franzen, same with Nyquist, same with Ericsson, same with Howard, etc, etc, etc...

It's true LeftWinger - I didn't necessarily like the 5 year term either, but Darren Helm is an extremely valuable forward that creates roster flexibility unlike anyone else. He is our best penalty killer plus our best (or second best) forechecker. He has been useful on the first line, and he's obviously been great on the 4th line. Having forwards like this is invaluable, especially in the playoffs when you win or lose games after you win or lose individual matchups. This undeniably happened against Tampa Bay in 2015 (who went to game 6 of the Finals) when Luke Glendenning got hurt and missed the last two periods of game 4, after completely suppressing the "kid line" to that point entirely. I truly believe the legend of Tyler Johnson may have never been a thing if not for that injury.

Daren Helm has that ability plus more to offer offensively.

Would I like him more at $2,950,000? Of course. But that isn't the math or the question that matters... It was widely reported that he took a hometown discount and had offers over $4,000,000 to leave - so we made it up on term. If the question to me is you can have Helm at $3.85 or no Helm, I take what I know considering I just lost my best player who was also a Center.

So if the "number" everyone seems comfortable with (which basically equates to the difference of a league min contract) isn't that big a deal - I can't really accept that one guy is preventing all of Jurco, Mantha, Anthanasiou and Bertuzzi from a job in the NHL.

I ***** about wasted money....at least I'm consistent and don't flip flop.

I also agree Miller could've have been let go, and Ott was pointless. All 3 aren't needed and kids would've filled better.

Vanek is going to surprise everyone and be twice as valuable to this team than helm. Unless they cater to useless 4th liners by putting them top 6 and Vanek bottom 6, which may just happen with an inflated salary.

That depends on what your definition of valuable is.

Vanek's skillset prevents him from playing in the bottom 6... So if he puts up 15-20 goals from the 1st or 2nd line, I don't know that he's even as valuable as Daren Helm who may put up 10-15 from the 3rd line, but also kill penalties at an 84-88% clip.

I was on Twitter earlier and reminded that Hudler was asking for 4M, while the Wings were offering 3M. It's not the 2M gap we're seeing here, but it's the way arbitration always goes.

In the end, the arbiter awarded Hudler 2.875M (although, I swear I remember reading something about him accepting it before, and just going through the process, anyway). It was after his third full season in DET, and he was coming off a 57-point campaign. IIRC, people were going crazy, thinking he was going to get paid.

Granted, the situations are different - it also happened seven years ago. Regardless, I'm expecting the award to be closer to what the Wings are offering than what Mrazek's camp is asking, if it even gets to that stage.

So glad the Wings filed for arbitration against Mrazek. Kid wants $5 million and hasn't even earned it imo. Smart move by Kenny.

Seriously why would anyone be okay and criticize management for Mrazek wanted to get overpaid? Unbelievable. The kid played like 54 games last year and had a questionable end to his performance. Obviously management needs to be conservative when handing a contract out. You don't throw money at someone long term when they're inconsistent.

It's funny because if we had signed him for 5 million for 6 years and he turned out to be a flop, the same people would be bitching about it 2-3 years from now.

Somewhere in the ballpark of $4 million sounds fair for both sides.

Let me ask you this....who do you want to see sit in the press box every night? That's likely 3 spots that need to be filled by someone. If there was no Ott and no Miller, who do you want getting zero icetime in the NHL and AHL?

We'll Pulkkinen is out, but a 3rd line of JURCO-AA-MANTHA would be nice. I'd of been fine with a Miller-Glenn-Sheahan 4th line. He'll if Helm maybe got 3 yrs at $2.5M he could bump Miller to #13 and play on the 4th. I don't know why Ott was signed, but he was. If we can't trade Nyquist, then sure of course there's not enough room for both AA and Mantha.

Tatar - Nielsen - Vanek

Zetterberg - Larkin - Abby

Nyquist - AA - Jurco

Helm - Glendening - Sheahan

Miller/Ott (Miller to GR when Pulkkinen comes back.)

That's what I would go with but Helms salary is going to command 3rd line, bumping AA to GR and miller or Ott up to 4th line. Or Jurco out of the lineup of Ott plays along with Miller bumping Sheahan up to 3rd.

Luke Schenn to the 'Yotes.

....FAR APART.... :hysterical: sure glad we wasted money on a useless Helm that could've gone to signing our goaltender if the future...but that's ok Holland, he got Helm for $4M for 5 yrs and you can just go with Howard. God Damn this Helm signing is going to destroy the future of this team!

Jurco, Pulkkinen, Mantha, AA, Mrazek all should be signed and on this team, but nope we got Helm. Maybe he should insure those stone hands that are worth so much, including the future of this team!

If Mrazek gets f***ed on this contract, he will be jaded and leave this team as soon as he can. Holland isf****** this fanbase and future once again with his loyalty to f***tards!

"Hey Petr, your our future, you are probably the most important part of our future, here's $2.75M. We'd offer you more, but you understand, kids don't get $5M, plus We gave Helm $4M because he is a fast 4th line checker with no scoring ability. You understand, right? Oh, btw, we still have Howard of this is an issue."

I hear Helm doesn't change the toilet paper roll after he uses the last of it.

His contract is not going to leave Mrazek sleeping on the streets. He'll get paid. It's nonsense to demand $5 million after one full NHL campaign anyway.

Ok, but my question was in a world where Ott and Miller do not exist, who do you envision being the healthy scratches who sit in the press box every night in case someone gets injured. There are usually 1-3 players in that role.

It's nonsense to demand over $4 mil per for 7 years after one 20 goal season, but it didn't stop Holland from giving that deal out.

Yeah, it's a deal that will come back to bite Detroit in the ass by the time the term is up. He's continued to make big mistakes. The term for Helm's contract was something I'm not fond of either. We all understand your opinion on the matter.

Do you guys let this stuff keep you up at night?

When people post the same thing every day in multiple threads, I would say that answers your question lol.

Ok, no ott or miller....still have helm.

Tatar - Nielson - Vanek

Zetterberg - Larkin - Abdelkader

Jurco - AA - Nyquist

Helm - Sheahan - Glendening

Frk since he has no exemptions & Tangradi maybe

I'd much rather have Mantha up and no helm as well. Plus I'm still hoping Nyquist gets dealt in a D trade....but...

What are the parameters here? No Ott and Miller. That's easy.

Tatar-Larkin-Abby

Z-Neilsen-Vanek

Nyquist-AA-Mantha

Glendening-Helm-Sheahan

Frk

Jurco

Dekeyser-Green

Smith-Markenko

Kronwall-Sproul

Ericsson

With this lineup we'd only have scrubs like Helm, Glendening, Abby, Sheahan, and Neilsen to kill penalties instead of Miller and Ott so we might be in real trouble lol.
