If this turns into reality, can't complain, increases for everyone over last year except for 2 (Nielsen...pretty much the same, but I'd ignore because he's a new player + Abdelkader...only small decrease and looks to be due to a few less games).

Where's Helm and his $4M?

Scoring is all that matters in hockey...

Ya because fast skaters who can't score are worth keeping. This is absolutely the worst re-signing Holland has made in years. I'd take a $1M cleary for a year to score 10 goals and be on the bottom 6 over this waste of cap and roster spot.

But he's here, just wait until he proves that this was a mistake...it will happen. Unless barbie doll helm shows up, then he won't make it to December. Hes either hurt or he's hurting the team...great signing!

Helm and Sheahan have had about that same points the last 3 years. I think it would be a coin flip for who would make that list.

Personally, I don't think we're getting 70 games out of Kronwall this year, so I think it's questionable whether he's in our top 10. Maybe DK gets back in the top 10 like 2 years ago.

If Athanasiou makes the team (which I think he will), I think he'll have 30+ pts. and be in the top ten.

10 points = $ 1 million a rule I've heard from our very own LGW posters.

By that equation then, 38-39 points from Helm.

I won't be as critical and say that I'm expecting at least 30 from him and his new contract. Anything less will be disappointing. Unless the entire teams offense sucks again, then that's another story.

So I'm looking for 30 points as well as for him to continue to do everything else he does. PK, speed, 3rd line center etc etc. No doubt he will continue to be good at the other stuff, the question is will he increase his scoring rate.

The Helm-LFG-Abdelkader line will be leading the team in TOI and have a whopping 40 goals between them. But they'd be good defensively so it's ok.

Don't forget how fast Helm is. $4M and a NTC fast! Arriba! 1.21 jigawatts!

Oh, and that will be 40 POINTS between them...30 from Abby.

So based on Helene St. James' "Helm" article, it sounds like Blash wants Helm to start the season as a 3rd line center. Pair that with the fact that Holland said Zetterberg would start on Neilsen's wing, and that Larkin would be a center, and it looks like our forward lines are starting to come together a little bit. It will be interesting to see how the rest fills out, but we can reasonable expect to see this based on what we've heard.

Zetterberg-Neilsen-?

?-Larkin-?

?-Helm-?

?-Glendening-?

Also can we please, PLEASE, stop forcing every big guy to be a "net front presence"? From Khan's "Mantha" article:

"Last year was a good first year for me to do net-front. It was the first time for me practicing it," Mantha said. "I worked on tips a lot during practices, just getting the feel of being in the right position in front of the goalie's eyes. It could be a good advantage for me, being 6-4, 6-5."

This kid is a skilled shooter. I don't care that he's big. You're taking his best weapon (shot) away from him by sticking him in the crease. Let unskilled guys bang in rebounds. You don't see Rick Nash, Blake Wheeler, or James Neal standing in front of the net on the PP just because they're big.

I've questioned the net front presence as well. For one it takes a forward out of the play to be a passing option also it makes it easy for the defenders to block lanes. Wings seem to have the toughest time getting shots through that I've seen

Being a screen is important but you have to be clever and help the offense and get in front at the right time

Nothing wrong with rounding out his skills, or, given our current roster, trying to use his size.

I think it's just that when we fans hear "net front" we automatically think "Homer" and a guy not really doing anything other than that. But the team is probably thinking more in terms of Franzen. Something he can and will occasionally be asked to do, but not the only or even defining characteristic of his game.

That's because our net front presence guys don't act like passing options like Holmstrom did. Their sticks are up rather than down.

Have you not seen all the times (usually with Sheahan) we've done that "pass to the side of the net for the quick move out front". Actually worked quite well a couple years ago. Probably need to disguise it better and/or add a new wrinkle or two now. Teams seem to have caught on to it.
