Potentially new GMs

Disclaimer:

This thread isn't about discussing the pros/cons of Ken Holland and his tenure as a Red Wings GM. So if people want to discuss him do it in one of the other topics. The goal is, to look at potential replacements starting next year or by the time his contract is up.

Don Maloney

As I've said in another thread I would be fine with Don Maloney. He didn't have a whole lot to work with in Arizona and left that team with a very solid core going forward (Duclair, Domi and OEL). His team made the playoffs under a shoestring budget and gave the Kings all they could handle a few years ago to me that's impressive.

What I like about him is that he isn't gunshy to trade players and get some great returns, i.e. the Yandle trade getting a first and Duclair for him is really really great. On the flipside I didn't like how they handled the Domi situation the guy was ready before and they've just kept him down for cost reasons but yeah that's out of his control if Leblanc told him to do so. Would I give him the job without asking other candidates? No, but I think he should be one of the top candidates on Mr. I's list.

Dean Lombardi

Maybe maybe the Wings get lucky and the Kings decide to fire Dean Lombardi if that happens he has to be #1 on this list and we all know what a great GM this guy is. I really like his philosophy of how to build teams that are tough to play against and he builds from the net out. Throw the bank at him and give the guy a free reign to do whatever is neccessary to rebuild the Wings to their former - too long gone - glory.

Jason Boterill (Ass. GM in Pittsburgh):

If Super Mario decides to extent Rutherford, which would be a huge mistake but whatever I think he would be an interesting choice. He is pretty young for a GM, has the much needed experience and could be one of the upcoming top GMS in the game. Of course there is no guarantee and some questionmarks on how he would do as THE guy running the show but nontheless a very interesting choice.

Before people are mentioning our current assistant GMs I think some fresh blood and new ideas are needed that's why I went with guys outside of the organization.

I just have a gut feeling that it'll be yzerman.. Seems like a very red wings move. Also his contract and Hollands are both up the same year; after the 2017-18 season I believe.

Either way, I think holland manages out the rest of his contract then either retires/steps back into a different "higher" front office role or signs a new contract with the wings..

If Holland decides to step down, I'm pretty sure the job is Yzerman's or Draper's.

I have zero desire to have Don Maloney as the GM of Detroit. They guy has accomplished nothing compared to Ken Holland. I think you said it best when you listed his career accomplishment in Arizona as drafting 3 players. and making it to the 3rd round 1 time. Also, you are using 2012 as an example of Arizona getting in to the playoffs with a "shoestring budget".....Arizona's cap hit that year was 61,792,917, Detroit's was 61,868,709. He had plenty of money to spend that year. http://www.spotrac.com/nhl/cap/2011/

Dean Lombardi did a great job in LA, though we are talking a 10 year re-build (7 years on his watch), I dont believe Wings fans would deal well with this which is evident to me by the reaction to the current re-build. But, if Holland stepped down, and Dean became available, I would be ecstatic with him.

Jason Boterill, I have zero idea how to evaluate a guy who is an assistant GM. I have no opinion on him, but I would rather have a GM with the pedigree of a Holland or Lombardi unless they were groomed for the position (ie. Yzerman, Draper). So I guess I would say no to him.

I don't see Yzerman coming here.

Pipe dream.

Why leave sunny Tampa for... Michigan :glare:

Not to mention the way fans are disrespectful to GMs and players here. We are the second coming of Toronto. For Yzerman's sake I hope he doesn't come here and tarnish is legacy.

Yzerman would be the sentimental, yet wrong, choice should Holland be replaced (which would also be dumb). Tampa Bays success has more to do with drafting Stamkos and Hedman as anything else and Yzerman had nothing to do with either. He's had some successful acquisitions (Bishop, Stralman), some decent ones (Garrison, Boyle), and some bad ones (Carle, Filppula). But most importantly he hasn't won jack s***.

In general I think its a bad idea to give front office duties to former franchise stars. It almost never works. Because they're so beloved they tend to be above scrutiny and their stature within the organization discourages any critical evaluation of the job they're doing.

One guy who has never been a GM, one guy who will certainly not be available, and one guy whos greatest accomplishment has been making one competent trade one time a couple years ago. No thanks.

Not really. Holland was a key part of selecting Lindstrom, Ferdorov, Konstantinov, Kozlov, McCarty, Lapointe, and Osgood as director of scouting before he was GM. Then he was instrumental in drafting Datsyuk, Zetterberg, and Kronwall. Stevie gets credit for Johnson, Kucherov, Palat, and Sustr, but he had NOTHING to do with Stamkos and Hedman.

As far as player acquisition goes, Holland gets credit for Hasek, Hull, Robitaille, Rafalski, and Chelios. Stevie gets credit for Bishop, Garrison, Stralman, Filppula, and Callahan.

No matter how you cut it, Holland was instrumental in building a dynasty. Stevie, while not entirely bad, hasn't drafted or acquired nearly the talent Holland has. Trying to divorce Holland from the Wings success, past and present, requires such a stretch of imagination as to make such an argument absurd.

I don't think Yzerman is coming here anytime soon, Tampa won't let him go. My guess is Holland will be the GM until his contract is over, and takes over for Jimmy Devellano. As for the next GM, I have no clue, I guess it depends who's available at the time.

Kris Draper is assistant to the GM, but not Assistant GM. That's Ryan Martin, who is also the GM for the Griffins. If anybody is being groomed its him. Or maybe Fischer. Drapers position was created for him to take care of him after his retirement, but he has almost no responsibilities regarding scouting, drafting, or roster management.

at least try it and throw the bank at him won't be an easy sell with all the holes, that's for sure. Should have never let him and Nill go. Kenny should have taken over from Develano 4 years ago so maybe it's not a position he wants

I also don't believe Mr. I would be happy with a first round exit streak. that's pathetic for wings standards

No argument concerning Holland's past contributions and successes, but since 2009 it's been a steady decline, and it's getting even worse now that Z, Dats, and Kronner are all in the twilight of their careers, Mike Babcock skipped town, other staff have left, he hasn't been able to sign any significant free agents, hasn't gotten lucky in the draft, has traded assets for broken down vets at the deadline who end up doing nothing to help, etc. It's time for him to move on.

We are setup with a core of Larkin, AA, Mantha, DD, and Mrazek, and secondary scoring in Nyquist, Abby and Tatar, and potential prospects in Jurco and Pulkkinen. We have holes on D, but I am sure that will be addressed.

Its almost as if people would be happier if he were awful. I think the problem here, is people get their hopes up when we play well or appear to be a very good team, then when that reality comes crashing down after a bad loss, an early elimination etc. people get emotional and that is when you hear the "fire Holland" "fire Blashill" talk etc.

You have to look at this current situation as a re-build, and accept the fact they we likely wont be contenders again for a few years when Larkin and co. mature enough to lead this team.

I dont want anyone else right now as the GM of Detroit because who else out there has 3 cups as GM from essentially two generations of players, and has set said team up with a core of players that can hopefully lead us to another. Is it a sure thing, of course not. But, to truly assess this new crop, people need to give it time. We were contenders from 1993-2011, its just not reasonable to expect that to go forever.

There are no GM candidates out there that are better or more experienced then Ken Holland. But if I had to choose someone if Holland chose to step down, my choice would be Yzerman.

Nill may want to come back!

dont forget him.

yea Dallas is a nice gig...but its not Detroit. :champs:

why would he? No pressure in Dallas he built himself an unbelievable team and the stars aren't even in their prime yet. Whoever will come in has to fix the hardest positions to dolphin hockey, too 6 center and top pairing defender, that's not an easy task although Nill fixed the former in 2 years

this isn't a discussion about Holland it's about potential replacements. And no, retooling isn't the same as rebuilding.

Gee I wondering how this became a discussion about Holland, who started that???

Accept the re-build Frank.

Yzerman was just quoted as saying he hoped he was still the GM of Tampa in 20 years.

As for Holland (sorry, but he's going to come up when discussion the GM position and frankly kinda stupid to demand that it doesn't), listing all his past accomplishments as reasons why he deserves the job now is kinda like listing all of Zetterberg's stats from 2005 to 2012 to justify his top line minutes in 2016.

For the last time it's not a rebuild, a rebuild means getting rid of past their prime players, sign people to short-term contracts in order to use them as assets for more draft picks and get TOP picks. What the Wings are doing/have tried to do is reTOOL: (have players in the minors and hope they turn out better than expected while the current core is still somewhat able to play), on the fly - major difference.

Let's be honest there is but one dream candidate and that's Stevie Y. In the Michigan Harbaugh world that could happen but probably not right now.

We can all dream about it but the fact is the guy is not available. I hope if the Bolts lose Stamkos and Drouin Winnik will go bonkers and fire him so the Wings can finally bring the captain back but that's more a dream than reality.
