They were going to sell the rights to some company. To think otherwise is really naive.

So all this "it should have been named after a Red Wing" is pointless. Where in the NHL has that happened in today's day and age??

No they weren't. The Illitches planned to forego selling the naming rights. They didn't want the money, and could have named the arena anything they wanted. They literally passed up millions, and paid themselves instead, to name the arena as they did. It's not like it was this OR another corporate name. It was this OR literally any other thing the Illitches wanted to name it. They chose to ignore the public's vested interest. Trying to gloss it over is disingenuous.

worst idea ever! If most are having issues about the LC logo on the roof, under Trump it would have a giant comb over, then our Griffins would have to go through some sort of reality show crap to make it to the big team.

I can think of worse ideas. Like Gary Bettman as NHL Commissioner.

Oh wait...

I'm a business and marketing genius.. I've been saying this all along.

p.s. LC and Illitchs, sugarcoat it all you want - you didn't FORGO anything.. You created a giant tax (marketing cost) write off for Lil' Caesars and agreed to pay yourselves over $120 MILLION DOLLARS!!! (6.25x20) Seems to be well ABOVE market rates for such things.

'Merica!!!!

Under the naming rights deal, Little Caesars will pay about $6.25 million per year for 20 years to another Ilitch entity that will operate the arena. By taking money from one family pocket and putting it in another, the Ilitches have forgone the chance to sell the rights to an outside bidder for a considerable sum.

Nope. The LED roof no longer happening has never been stated. As far as we all know, that is still happening and the roof can display whatever they want it to at any given time.

In this video they state otherwise unfortunately.

LINK

In regards to the Little Ceasars symbol on the roof:

"That will probably be permanent but the jewel itself, the part the wraps around the rink, will change colour."

I stand corrected, but still do not care. Like I've previously said. Nobody will care about what the building is called come game time. There are also much worst companies that could have bought the naming rights.

Jobing.Com Arena is still the clubhouse leader.

Booooo. You'd think they could use some of the naming money they're paying themselves to make the roof still happen

But yeah, no one will care nearly as much come puck drop. Just gotta get the trolling and disappointment out of our systems :P

It's too bad really as I was really looking forward to a new arena. I love the history at the Joe but the place is really a dump these days. I guess be careful what you wish for. I agree with others that the biggest kick in the nuts is the stupid LC logo is replacing the beautiful LED lit Winged Wheel. Way to get the fans hopes up with that one.

The guy who lives in Newfoundland doesn't care about how an deal arena done with US taxpayer funds is handled.

Color me surprised.

Let me elaborate: I don't care what ANY area is called. They are basically all funded by tax payer dollars, and basically all with a corporate sponsored name. Even here in Canada, believe it or not. Welcome to the 21st century.

I live in a place where we starting this year are gonna have to pay a fee out of every pay just to LIVE here. So excuse me if I think whining about the name of an arena is a little petty. Us here would kill to see our tax dollars go to something we could actually enjoy.
