Buppy 1,720 Report post Posted May 3, 2016 Eichel had only 8 more points than McDavid, in 36 more games. I don't think it takes any ifs and assumptions to say that McDavid was the better player. If he wins it I wouldn't like it, but I think he deserved the nomination. I also think Gost should win. Phenomenal performance for a rookie defenseman. 2 WingsallTheway and MabusIncarnate reacted to this
kickazz 5,459 Report post Posted May 3, 2016 (edited) McDavid no doubt is the best rookie. But I think we came to a conclusion here months ago that the one with the highest points usually wins the ROY. Unless a d-man is involved. Not sure how the writers vote if that's the case. Gost could very well win over Panarin Edited May 3, 2016 by kickazz
FireCaptain 563 Report post Posted May 4, 2016 I don't think anyone is upset with that. I think some are upset with at least 2 of the 3 choices tho. Are people really upset Larkin isn't a finalist? He's not one of the three best rookies. Period. 1 13dangledangle reacted to this
Bannedforlife 403 Report post Posted May 6, 2016 I can respect the idea about thriving halfway through a season, while others tend to be injured/wear down. I really don't think Mcdavid would have dropped dramatically like Larkin did but yeah thats something we can never really determine. I'd still think the most likely winner is Panarin followed by Gostisbehere and then Mcdavid. I really don't see the NHL giving the award to Mcd, that would actually be flat out ridiculous. He deserves a nomination but not the actual trophy. If I had it my way I would vote for Gostisbehere, its so much harder to produce as a Defenceman, let alone a rookie one. The NHL has zero say in who wins the award.
kliq 3,755 Report post Posted May 6, 2016 The NHL has zero say in who wins the award. Ya the awards are decided on by hockey writers with the exception of Ted Lindsay award which is voted on by the players. I'm not sure how the one's associated with charity are picked. MabusIncarnate 5,344 Report post Posted May 7, 2016 I think I agree with the minority here, I like Gostisbehere because of his vast improvement of play game after game in his rookie season, and I think it's a lot harder to adapt to being an NHL level defensemen successfully over being an NHL level scoring forward, and how quickly he did should speak volumes about why he's a nominee. I know he likely won't get it, but Gostisbehere has my vote. 1 amato reacted to this
toby91_ca 620 Report post Posted May 7, 2016 If you've proven yourself to be better than all the rookies (McDavid), I don't really have a problem with playing less games. It's not like an MVP award where you can say "how can he be MVP if he missed so many games" - I don't think he'll win, because of the games missed, but I'm sure that's the thought process for people that voted for him. 1 krsmith17 reacted to this
