There are a few flaws in your argument though.

1. Datsyuk was a primary scorer while Nyquist was a secondary scorer. So comparatively Datsyuk was just as bad (if not worse than Nyquist).

2. Nyquist's quality of teammates are worse than Datsyuk (who primarily played with Brett Hull and Henrik Zetterberg). Datsyuk also averaged about 3+ minutes more ice time in his 2nd seasons and beyond in the playoffs

3. Datsyuk's first good playoff year was after his first 41 playoff games. Nyquist has only played 35 playoff games.

And then you're using hindsight bias to confirm that Datsyuk figured it out. Even though it took him a looooong time to figure it out. And at the time we were all saying exactly what we are saying of Nyquist. The narrative then for about 4 years in a row was "Pavel Datsyuk is not cut out for the playoffs". Easier to look back in hindsight tho.. But you aren't open to the idea that Nyquist might be a late bloomer as well? I mean sure he might not pan out... maybe Nyquist will never figure it out. But seeing as how Datsyuk took 41 games to figure out, and knowing Nyquist has played about 35 games so far, I think we can at least give Nyquist another 6+ games to see if he finds his mojo.

But hey I'm open to the idea of trading Nyquist. Especially if it means getting someone who can score in the playoffs (Kyle Okoposo)

I'm not ready to give up just yet on Nyquist either, but I think a couple of important points are being missed here:

#1 - Datsyuk's first 37 playoff games were played before the first lockout in 2004/2005 - so it isn't a surprise that he struggled offensively, as the obstruction rules (which were producing historically low goal totals) had yet to change. His playoff numbers (like a lot of other skilled forwards) increased in 2005/2006 after the crackdown. For example, our Stanley Cup "greatest team ever" run in 2001-2002, saw Brendan Shanahan lead our team in scoring with only 75 points.

#2 - 21 out of Datsyuk's first 37 playoff games came as a rookie in 2002. This was before the Zetterberg - Datsyuk - Hull line, and maybe before he even had powerplay time... To compare Nyquist's first 35 playoff games as a secondary scorer on a fringe playoff team who lose consistently in the first round, to Datsyuk as a secondary scorer on maybe "the greatest team ever" is a tough one for me, no matter how bad Pavel's point totals were.

#3 - Ice time is also a difficult metric to use when comparing players who (A) play a different position and (B) play a different role. Datsyuk was the premier two-way center in the NHL for a long time - his shutdown/penalty killing ability didn't show up in the boxscore - but neither did the players he was out against, which certainly helped win us games. Unfortunately, if Nyquist doesn't produce offensively, he isn't doing much atall.

Even if you entirely ignored his rookie season he still struggled until his 5th season in the NHL. In his rookie year he played with Brett Hull. He had PP time in the rookie season as well. 11 PP points in the season and 1 PP goal in playoffs.

I will also add that although there might not be a correlation. Between his early struggles and later production Datsyuk worked on his strength and conditioning and went from about 178 lbs to 195 lbs.

Nyquist gets swatted like a fly. So maybe he should work on getting stronger so he can create his own space like D and Z learned to. The whole Tyler Johnson strategy doesn't work for everyone.

I think we're back to pre lockout offense and penalty calling when it comes to obstruction though.

I feel like it's a combination of pre and post. They'll call every little thing against a team with a lead, and let a losing team get away with murder. It's how the league seems to manufacture its fake parity.

Datsyuk was probably the same size as Gus when he came in, and within a few seasons was pretty jacked. So here's hoping Gus follows suit, considering his age it seems less likely though.

GusGus with a hat trick for Sweden. Back to back goals in the second, and a shortie in the third. Five goals and one assist for six points after four games. Apparently he don't love us this much??

Larkin with a beautiful goal in the USA 5-1 win over Hungary. Dead angle, aims at the back/side of the goalie on purpose to bounce it in. A fine display of awareness and skill. +3 rating as well.

Great. Awesome. Go write about it in your Gustav Nyquist fan blog before you tuck yourself into bed under your Gustav Nyquist goose down comforter so you can have Gustav Nyquist dreams about Gustav Nyquist scoring 1 Gustav Nyquist point every 300 minutes of Gustav Nyquist playoff hockey. I don't care anymore.

Lol someone doesn't take criticism well

Marchenko looking better every game , a +4 today against the Swedes.

Knew I forgot something. Marchenko looked Really good. He was way more offensive than I have seen him be in the Wings system and can clearly play aggressively in the attacking zone. Looking forward to see him expand that next season, if he's still around which I hope he is.

Also, Datsyuk with a goal and an assist.

It seems everyone that gets out of that system improves offensively. It's a little irritating.

Yeah but IIHF competition is relatively weak compared to NHL teams.

With some exceptions. Team Russia easily matches or bests most NHL teams.

Tre Kronor might even be too much for the 2015-2016 Red Wings
