Finland beating Canada was a bit of a surprise. Not too much of a surprise though, I think those were the two powerhouse teams in their division at least. Canada losing 4-0 was surprising to me though....I think their GF - GA stat leading into that game was 34-4.

No contest in CAN/SWE, 6-0 Canada.

Gustav Nyquist played 18:47 and yet I couldn't see him out there. Somehow he managed a +/-0.

Yes, he has scored a lot in this tournament (7) but it was against easy opponents. This was another shameful display.

The reason your point (among 20 others you try to make to cherry pick Nyquist) doesn't make any sense is because all of the other players in the tournament have played against similar competition. It's not like Nyquist is the only one playing against crap teams. So comparatively he's still got better numbers than say Datsyuk who has only 1 goal in the same exact competition.

That's not entirely true, I don't think Russia played against any of the teams Sweden played against did they? Your point is still valid though.

Yea but the tourny overall is still lesser competition for the NHL players it seems.

Just looked up the schedule -

Sweden played - Latvia, Denmark, Czech, Kazakhastan, Norway, Switzerland, Russia and Canada

Russia played - Czech, Kazakhastan, Latvia, Denmark, Switzerland, Norway, Sweden, Germany.

They both played the same exact teams up until the quarter finals. So his argument is flawed. It seems like he's cherry picking to undermine Nyquist while ignoring the fact that other teams had similar if not exact competition (in the case of Russian team where Panarin, Datsyuk and other NHLers are playing).

But I should add that Panarin does have the second highest points in the competition.

I'm certainly cherry picking Nyquist. Not because I think he's bad, quite the opposite, I have high expectations of him. I don't think he should be a decent secondary scorer, I think he can be a decent primary scorer. Hence I am knocking on him when he's not delivering what I think he can do.

With that said I can't complain regarding his overall performance in the IIHF. What I'm sharking on is when he tends to go invisible in some games.

As for better numbers than Datsyuk, that's bad info. Datsyuk(1g, 7a) and Nyquist (7g, 1a) is currently tied at 8 points and Dats will very probably overtake him since Sweden is out. But those numbers only tells me that NHL caliber players rack up points against easy opposition.

So how exactly is Nyquist shameful. He's tied with one of the worlds best centers/primary scorers in point totals :w00t:

For the record, I too am critical of Nyquist such as his playoff issues- and have even suggested trading him if Okposo was brought in. But all in all, this tournament has actually been a good one for him.

I don't think Nyquist will ever be a primary scorer at the NHL level. He's too passive in this overall game and tends to let the play come to him. Which is probably why his possession numbers are so much worse than Tatars. I think Tats is much more likely to be a more dominant player. Nyquist reminds me a lot of Ales Hemsky. Highly skilled but not as engaged as he needs to be in order to maximize his skillset.

they can't have three ten million dollar contracts on the books I feel like Panarin will be even better next year and unlike Kane he isn't even in his prime yet

Isn't Panarin on a standard rookie contract? 3 yrs about $1 mil per?

Looked it up. He's got 1 more year at 3,387,500, then he'll be an RFA. So a significant compensation due to Chicago if someone else signs him.
