Kentucky Derby: Nyquist

Well, Facebook is for dog pictures and the internet is for porn. Can't expect everyone here to know about the backstory of "Nyquist the horse".

They mentioned it every single game and intermission and pre-game leading up to the race. Of course, it was just a convenient tie-in since NBC was broadcasting the Derby and wanted to keep reminding hockey fans to tune it. It must have worked. I actually did watch just to see.

The fact that it was right before a game had a lot to do with it, but I was curious. Blew my mind that they can do a 2+ hour pre-game show for a 2 minute race.

Thinking about it some more, this guy must have lost a lot of races before he finally came to Nyquist. Yzerman, Howe and Sawchuk must have been crappy horses. Zetterberg and Datsyuk didn't pan out.

If Nyquist had lost, the next horse would be named either Quincey or Mowers.

Two horses die during first races at Preakness Stakes.

Really wet muddy track, wonder if that was a factor but once in a while you hear about horses dying in a race. Sad.

From ABC News

http://abcnews.go.com/US/preakness-day-horses-die-jockey-injured-races/story?id=39278729

Two horses died and a jockey was injured at Pimlico Race Course during the first few races of a rainy Preakness Saturday in Baltimore.
Racehorse Homeboykris collapsed while walking back to his barn after winning the first race on a dirt course at the Pimlico, according to Sal Sinatra, the president and general manager of the Maryland Jockey Club. The horse collapsed after his picture had been taken in the winner's circle.
Later, racehorse Pramedya fractured her left cannon bone while racing on a turf course, according to Sinatra, and Pramedya’s Jockey, Daniel Centeno, fell and suffered a right clavicle fracture. Pramedya, 4, was euthanized on the track, according to The Associated Press.

Just as the case of player Nyquist we have fans bandwagoning and then falling off the bandwagon after a disappointing performance from the horse Nyquist!

As expected.
