Jim Bedard gone... Ferschweiler demoted

#RedWings looking for a goaltending coach after opting not to renew Jim Bedard's contract. He'd been with team for 18 seasons.

Wow! Interesting!

#RedWings have reassigned assistant coach Pat Ferschweiler, who'll work from press box. They're seeking two new bench assistants.

Thank God!

Great news on Firschweiler. I liked Bedard, but he's been here forever. Any chance Osgood takes over? Would he be any good in a coaching role?...

I'd prefer an experienced coach. No more rookie coaches for the NHL level please. Blash has got to surround himself with some veteran coaches who are proven for NHL imo.

I was questioning Bedard a few months ago as well. We've haven't had consistent goaltending since Osgood in 2009.

FWIW - http://www.mlive.com/redwings/index.ssf/2016/05/red_wings_reassign_assistant_c.html?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter

One possible candidate to replace him Jeff Salajko, the goaltending development coach for the Grand Rapids Griffins the past three seasons. He has worked closely with Petr Mrazek and even joined the Red Wings on the ice for practices in Columbus this past season.

Yeah, I'd definitely agree that we should be looking at guys with more experience. I was just curious if Osgood would get a look or if he'd even be interested. Probably not.

Either way, I'm just ecstatic that we'll have a new power-play coach going into next season. Anyone know any potential candidates?

I wonder why now after 18 years. If there was a problem with his ability to coach I feel like it would have been exposed at some point after two decades and a bunch of goalies coming through. Then again both Howard and Mrazek have been wildly inconsistent the last couple years. However I also can't help but wonder if Mraz and Bedard don't get along. If they have been butting heads there's no way the organization ships Mrazek out in favor of a goaltending coach, and it's interesting that this is happening now, after Mrazek's first full season with the Wings.

Although on the other hand it could be Blashill's call, and after working with him for a year decided he wants someone else.

"Jeff would like to get a couple of assistants a little heavier on experience," Holland said. "With Tony Granato leaving and all the change in the industry, we decided to consider adding two assistants with more experience. Ideally, it will be an offensive guy and a defensive guy."

Experience is on the way... Good!

I think our defense was fine defensively, just not quite involved enough offensively, whether that's making a clean outlet pass, or stepping up in the offensive zone. I do think that is somewhat due to personnel though, which is why upgrading our defense is a much bigger concern than the defense and penalty kill coach in my opinion. As long as we can acquire a top pairing guy and play the guys that can provide offense from the back end (Green, Smith, *trade acquisition*), and continue to develop Sproul, I think we'll be in good shape.

We definitely need to make some changes with the offense, but unlike the defense I think the personnel is fine, it's the coaching that's been the issue, in particular with the power-play. Whatever coach we get to run the offense and power-play needs to be able to utilize his players and systems a hell of a lot better than whatever Firschweiler was doing...

It was Sean Burke.

Thanks! Now I don't know much of anything about goalie coaches but I think Dubnyks improvements, though not necessarily all Burkes fault, should at least earn him an interview if that were at all possible.

2 words: Mitch Korn (coached Rinne and Holtby) and I guess that turned out extremely well for both guys.

PP: Adam Oates

PK: Randy Carlyle

please

Agreed. Except they'll be looking to get paid and even if that's the case Holland should pay them well.

But it seems like a pipe dream.

Well there is no salary cap on coaches so why not spend big on them. I don't know if Carlyle wants to be a benchboss again and Oates just hasn't the resumee so if they do well in their roles they'll might get another look.

Especially Randy could help out Blas a lot with his experience

Korn has a very well attended goaltending school and a lot of knowledge working with different styles goalies https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mitch_Korn

That's what I mean. Oates may already be making more money simply from his current consultant job and may not be interested and Carlyl may not want to work behind the bench. But if they are interested, Holland should seriously consider them.

Once the season was finished, I immediately thought of Oates as an option for an assistant coach and found this piece on what he's doing these days - http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/30-thoughts-adam-oates-responds-critics/

He seems pretty content in putting his role as a coach behind him, but I suppose anything could happen. I recalled him visiting Detroit during this season, but it just appears part of something he was willing to do as a consultant.

I would have had preferred Fersch be gone completely as I dont see what he brought to the organization. Bedard is a bit of a shock but when you look at it it I think its a good thing. 18 years is a long time in one spot and the game changes. Theres a chance management doesn't see him keeping up with the changes. Now add into the fact that in those 18 years he really hasn't developed a young goalie to reach there top potential. McCollum, Patterson, Larsson, and Howard are examples of guys drafted in the top 3 rounds while hes here that never reached the potential they had when drafted. The team has a young stud in Mrazek. Getting a guy in with a proven record of developing goalies is a plus in my opinion.
