I think he's playing the media a little but it's also early in the off season.. And teams know we'll want to trade the contract. They're all going to ask for more than they're actually willing to take in the deal.

Exactly. As in think of this in business terms. He's posturing towards the teams that might possibly take his contract, using the media for it. He is way more savvy than some people here give him credit for.

It is the correct stance to take in my opinion. Can't just fold and say something other than what he did. He'll work them phones.

Give it some time and enjoy the sun. I'm betting you'll enjoy it more than Holland, he is probably living mostly in his head for a couple of months.

So basically: Pasha wanted a five year contract, got a 3 year with the option to go home before the 16/17 season and that's exactly what he's doing right now.

People shouldn't be surprised that Holland is taking a hard stance through the media, can't just say please take the contract. Of course 7,5 million are a lot of money but the fact is it's only for one year and it's not a cup or bust year for the Wings. Glad he mentioned, that he won't give up a high draft pick or one of the top 2 talents (Larkin, Mantha).

he only got the option after he informed the team he wanted to retire essentially as soon as he signed the 3 year contract.

pavel screwed up and should have taken one year deals

I feel like Holland is full of s*** to be honest. Why would Datsyuk have been asking for a 5 year extension, only to want to return to Russia pretty well as soon as he inked a 3 year deal? None of it adds up. Sounds more like a GM trying to cover his own ass after trying to convince Pavel to stick around longer than he wanted to.

Lmao I don't think so. In this country if Holland says a lie like that , Datsyuk and the former agent Greenstein could sue his ass for false information to public.

If you watch the full press conference (50 minutes long though), Holland also mentioned that Datsyuk confided with Henrik Zetterberg about it in 2013 as well. That's way too many names Holland would be "bulls***ting" about.

It's sounds like Datsyuk, Greenstein (old agent who Pav dropped), Milstein (new agent), Holland, and Hank knew about the situation for years now.

I'm not blaming Holland for this at all. I think Datsyuk should consider himself lucky that the organization didn't take action against him for not honoring the contract. Instead, he left on a good note and Holland thanked him for his time here. That's that.

Not making excuses for him. Holland's MO for a while now has been hanging onto players for too long. Why would this be any different?

Pretty sure it was the agent who asked for 5 yrs (if this ever happened)

I think pavel just wanted his signing bonus and wanted to leave pretty much soon after , it's holland's fault for giving him 3 years

People are gonna get so pissed when zetterberg f***s off In a year or 2 .. No way he's playing for a million a season

That one would be hard to blame on anyone, because the penalty for that was implemented after the contract was signed. It was a great contract at the time, and the league decided to punish teams who signed players to perfectly legal contracts after the fact.

In the end, Holland is gonna have to be willing to trade something upwards of a 3rd rounder or a Pulk-level prospect. I can understand saying no if teams are only willing to get more than that, but he has to be willing to give up something to fix this.

Chicago had to give up a good player to dump a contract. The difference is that contract has to be paid. This is a money-free cap hit, and under no circumstances should a team be looking to get that kind of a return out of Holland.

I'm not blaming anyone , i guarantee people will be pissed off though when he f***s off with 2-3 yrs left on the deal .... And that will really leave us in a little trouble if some of the kids play really well and want bigger deals

Gotta try and find a few good contracts and hope they pan out like Kenny did with kronwall (5 yrs x3 per I believe it was )

Anyways we see what happens when the time comes , we should be all good

KH sounding like a straight up gangsta

"We convinced him to come back for the '15-16 season because I said to Pav and Dan Milstein last summer, If you’re going to leave – and you can never stop a player from retiring – but if you think you’re going to just go back home and play in the KHL for the '15-16 and '16-17 seasons, we’re going to do everything we can through the NHL to see if we can stop you from playing in the KHL,"

because at the time of signing the contract, datsyuk was still an elite player. according to holland, datsyuk did not want to do one year deals. which as datsyuk said in the mitch album article says was a mistake and that he should have taken the one year deals

holland has made a lot of mistakes the last few years, but the datsyuk situation is not one of them

Zetterberg could also potentially go on LTIR for the remaining couple years if his back flares up again...

I think Holland is playing the media to possibly lower other teams asking price. He doesn't need to trade this contract, and he's letting other teams know that, and that he's not giving up any high end assets to get a deal done. Regardless, I think Pav's contract gets moved in the next few days.

I'm expecting it to happen closer to July 1st

Kenny's gonna play chicken with the coyotes, canes and sens gm's

I suggest we move Datysuk's contract and Jimmy Howard to Buffalo or Calgary Flames ... two teams looking for a solid #1 goaltender and have lots of cap space.

Just wondering if anyone else thinks this would work ... it makes a lot of sense to me, we'd have lots of room to go after Stamkos if we get rid of Datsyuk's contract and Jimmy's.
