Who would you protect?

With the confirmation of Las Vegas getting a team, that means an expansion draft will be occurring this time next season. The rules are as follows:

"Players with two or fewer years of pro experience will be exempt. Players with no-movement clauses (not a less-restrictive no-trade clause) must be protected. Teams must expose at least two forwards and one defenseman who appear in 40 games this upcoming season or 70 total games in 2015-16 and 2016-17." (h/t:http://www.mlive.com/redwings/index.ssf/2016/06/ask_ansar_on_who_red_wings_mig.html)

So, for example, the Wings wouldn't have to protect Larkin, but would have to protect Mantha.

The teams can either protect: 7F, 3D, and 1G OR 8 Skaters (F or D) and 1 G.

In the article above, Khan takes a crack at a guess for the roster as it sits now. Here is mine:

Tatar
Abby
Mantha
Athanasiou
Nyquist
Sheahan
Glendenning

Dekeyser
Smith
Marchenko (Oulette maybe here)

Mrazek

I'm unsure how the UFA thing will work, but if we have the same team then as we have now, who would you want to protect?

So am I correct in saying that we don't have a single player that we would be forced to protect? Datsyuk was the only player with a no-movement clause, and the rest have no-trade clauses and would not need protection?...

I think this list will be different a year from now, as I expect some moves before the season starts, as well as possibly at the trade deadline...

But here's my list as our roster sits today...

Forwards: Nyquist, Tatar, Abdelkader, Sheahan, Mantha, Athanasiou, Jurco

Defense: DeKeyser, Smith, Sproul

Goalie: Mrazek

Ya I don't understand this , was an article on Detroit free press that mentioned Larkin mantha and athanasiou and I asked someone on Twitter and they said it was cause of some rule

Gotta ask on Twitter again and find out if they are ok as well as bertuzzi and other ahlers

As for smith who you both protected , I wouldn't protect him since he's gonna be a ufa , just have an agreement with him in place and sign it after the draft so we don't have to waste a protection. On him

You would protect Jurco? If I were Holland, I'd be trying to buy Jurco a townhouse in Vegas as we speak.

Yes, I would protect Jurco over other possible options... Who else would you protect? Zetterberg? No team is going to take that contract for an deteriorating 37 year old. Pulkkinen? Jurco is over Pulkkinen for me. Glendening? No thanks. Nosek? Callahan? Nope. Nope.

nyquististhefuture, I'd be okay with going that route with Smith and protecting Marchenko or Ouellet, as long as we're not losing Smith...

Glendening, like Miller is the most overrated type of player in hockey. You know that famous Ken Holland quote, "there is no hockey store" to acquire top level talent... Well there is a "hockey store" to acquire bottom 6 talent like Glendening and Miller, it's called free agency...

Jurco >>>>> Glendening in my opinion and it's not even close...

Glendenning is good at his role. Jurco has no role and ultimately no place.

Players like Glendenning and Helm were not acquired through free agency. I guess Miller was, but he's not that special, imo. Holland sucks at acquiring lower line players in the market. He ends up signing guys like Richards and Weiss who then play on the lower lines because they suck. That's not what I'd consider acquiring lower line players.

Jurco doesn't have a role right now because he has been highly misused. I hope he's given a legit shot out of camp this year and he runs with it. His skill set and potential are way too high to give up in an expansion draft over Luke Glendening. If both were exposed, teams would chose Jurco over Glenny without question...

Yes, both Glendening and Miller were acquired via free agency. Glendening straight out of college and Miller after Tampa let him walk. I never mentioned Helm because he's not in the same category as the other two. Helm is one of the best bottom six forwards in the league, whereas Miller and Glendening are fillers...

Have to disagree again. At this point, Glendenning is more useful than Helm. Helm's injury history and lack of production despite lots more icetime have made him obsolete. We're not going to use him in the bottom six because we lack talent in the top six. He will continue to play in the top six and stink it up.

As for Jurco, look at his numbers in the NHL the last two years and tell me how he's been misused? He's simply not that good. He won't get more icetime until he can prove he can score. Critics would argue he could score more if he got more icetime. Maybe it's a Catch 22, but I don't think he's made the most of his opportunity.

They will protect players they feel are important to them.

And as much as I'm not a fan of Glendog and how much he's overrated amongst fans, the management and Mr. Blashill value Glendog highly.

So realistically speaking, they will protect him over Jurco. Just the way it probably will end up being.

I personally think it will be interesting to see if we protect Zetterberg, and if Vegas would have any interest in him. From a Red Wings perspective, Z is the captain, a life long Wing, and still (as of now) an important player. But from a business standpoint, his contract will kill us for a little while when he retires due to the cap recapture.

From Vegas' standpoint, would they want to bring in a top 9 (likely by next summer) forward with high caliber character to lead your team for a few seasons, despite the recapture. And on that subject, would they be interested in him BECAUSE of the recapture because it would help them hit the floor for a couple of years while they figure things out.

The organization values loyalty more than anything. Just look at how the whole Datsyuk situation transpired. I would not at all be surprised if they protected Zetterberg. Imo they shouldn't because the chance of him getting picked up are low. It's not impossible, but it's likely low.

But on the chance they do lose him, it would be an extremely awkward situation for the parties involved including the fan base.

Why does Kahn think they'd protect Ericsson?

Detroit would be hit with most of the penalty

I'd love to list players, but this is probably a better question best answered after the "Summer of Change."

I'd they land Stamkos, Ladd and acquire Trouba let's say, you know they will be protected. Stamkos contract may come with the automatically protected NMC. I'm sure he'll have one.

Glendening is not close to as useful as Helm. Helm is effective in all three zones whereas Glendening is only effective in the defensive zone. Why do some still feel the need for the possession black holes that aren't effective in any other aspect of the game other than defending, aka chasing the puck and blocking shots. And Helm's injury woes are behind him.

Jurco absolutely has been misused and he is a very good hockey player that just hasn't figured it out at the NHL level yet. He's still very young and I have full confidence if given ample time, he will be an extremely effective middle six winger. One thing I will agree with is that he hasn't made the most of his opportunities, but again he's still young and I do believe he'll figure it out.

We're likely not going to agree here, but for me, it's Jurco over Glendening 100 out of 100 times...

Please, no more Helm debates! (Says the man who used to mention Franzen every chance he got!)

I would definitely protect Jurco before Glenny, but I think neither would be taken by an expansion team. Not with one or both of Nyquist and Tatar left unprotected...
