Yup, every GM is giving out terrible contracts. It has absolutely nothing to do with inflation...

Helm brings a lot to this team, just as Clutterbuck brings a lot to the Islanders. Sure, they may be a little over paid, but the point is, it's not just goals and points that go into contract negotiations...

I completely agree with you, but you are never going to silence the Helm haters. Doesn't matter how much logic or comparables  you bring to the table, when someone has an emotional response and are being stubborn with their opinions, nothing will change.

What I dont understand is you constantly talk about AA and Mantha being held down by Helm, but if anything the signing that is holding those two down (if they do in in fact get held down) would be Vanek, who ironically you love the signing of.

Yes I know Vanek is one year and Helm is 5 years, but in the context of players being held down this upcoming season, long term is a moot point. Vanek is the one taking minutes away from those two in a top 6 position while Helm will ideally be playing third line. If that plays out, Helm will likely be an upper end third liner, while Vanek will likely be a top 6 disappointment.

Oops....

I will own that Lefty, I even gave you props in another thread. I was 100% wrong about Vanek and I will give you credit that you were right. You have to admit thought its kind of funny that the players he has the best chemistry with are your favs Nyquist and Helm .

I do. I'm actually hoping they reunite when Helm is healthy. At least to see if they still have it. But something tells me Blashill won't do it.

I figured Vanek was gonna be a huge steal and be big for this team as well. He's making less than half of his previous contract right now (but still getting paid close to $8 million this year along with his buyout from MIN) on a one year "Let's see what you've got" deal. He's gonna perform to sign a bigger long term deal.

So what does everyone think of this signing one year later?

His injury bug came back this year which reduced him to 50 games played.

I think his signing in a bubble is ok, but combined with Nielsen, Abby, E, Howard etc. I think it was a bad signing.

Now if we were to trade the 4 guys I named above, I would have no problem with it. You need to have some vets to help mold the kids, and I think Helm is a great 3C.

Not much has changed for me. I still think he's one of the better bottom 6 forwards in the league when healthy. Slightly overpaid in salary and term, but far from our worst contract.

Exactly this.

I still feel the same. I really like Helm, but it felt unnecessary at the time with the Nielson signing and given that Sheahan had taken over as 3C the year previous. It didn't look like he would have a place. Now that Sheahan played like poop and he got the 3C position back it makes more sense, but we still have 1 too many 3Cs if we still planning on Larkin being a center.

I am glad he's still with the team, though. He wouldn't be my first choice of the contracts to ditch. I do think the Nielsen signing was the worse one at center. If we didn't do that deal Helm's wouldn't really look that bad - just a little overpaid. I think E, Kronwall, Nielson, and Howard's contracts are greater roadblocks to getting things sorted out

It is good to keep in mind that Helm does have a Modified NTC that says he can be traded if we don't make the playoffs 18-19 or 19-20 or if he isn't in the top 9 those years. So there is a guard that will help us if the rebuild isn't going in the right direct by then.

I thought he had a strong start to the season and was earning the dollar but the injury hit him and it felt more like the injury prone Helm of old.

I want the Ericsson, Howard, Nielsen contracts gone. But realistically I don't see Nielsen nor Ericsson's going away. I think Howard and Helm's contract have a better chance of being moved and I would pull the trigger. Along with Glendening and Sheahan.

Assuming we are truly rebuilding; (I know Holland doesn't call it a "full" rebuild), but even with a partial one, I think if Helm, Glendening, Sheahan, Howard have interest around the league I would move them.

Having said all that if there was an opportunity to drop 2 out of the 3 centers (Sheahan, Glendening and Helm), I would keep Helm because he's better than the other two.

Still a horrible signing. Injury prone 3rd liner at best who thinks he's a top 6 forward. Yeah, lock him up Kenny

I'd love to see where Helm has ever said or implied that he thinks he's a top 6 forward...

He, along with Abby I do not mind. It's the contracts handed to the likes of disney.com that I sour on.

Yeah, Glendening is a mediocre 4th liner that can be replaced any and every year by a UFA or kid within the system. It was crazy to give him anything close to the 4 years at $1.8M that he received... The most he should have gotten was 2 years at $1M. The Glendening, Nielsen, Ericsson and Howard deals are the worst in my opinion...
