I remember that. That was nucking futs. Unless we have absolutely no chance of making the playoffs we won't be selling anything at the deadline though

You're probably right, that's Kenny's way. But it's not the smart way, we keep holding onto players and watching them walk when we could've flipped them and plugged in a young player and been just fine. Vanek especially not being home grown, if we're in the 8th seed and we can get a 1st for Vanek then in the spirit of Kenny's "retool on fly" we should do it. Then let AA and Mantha hypothetically play more down the stretch. Unfortunately the more I type, the more I realize the red Wings will never do that and that is exactly the reason we sit in mediocrity today. Bad asset management.

Everything I have seen post-season points to that management is aiming to make the playoffs one more season before heading into the new arena. Any moves during the next season will probably reflect that goal unless we are so low that it is pointless.

I dont.

Vanek is only 32 years old. He is a much better option than we had last season.

He is a PP specialist, scores dirty rebound goals and has the potential to score 30+ goals.

No one is going to be surprised if he only scores 10, everyone already expects him to fail, but he could very well score 35 or more. He will get top PP time, he will top 6 if not top 3 minutes. He will return to form here. He Went To A PRESSURE HOTBED in Minnesota. He was supposed to join the Olsen twins and bring a Cup. They will not win a Cup anytime soon and the pressure is on because of the twins signings and he was supposed to be a missing piece. That's a ton of pressure. Here he can relax, help the PP and help get us back to the playoffs. This is not a Cup team, but with Nielsen here for the rest of his career and with the right move for a top defender, there's no reason why this team cannot win a Cup within 3-5 years. Vanek will want to be part of that and he will be out to prove he belongs.

Again, he's only 32, he has a good 5-6 of quality hockey left. He can't be compared to Richards, he is 36, I never expected him to be re-signed, in expect Vanek to earn himself a 4 year $20M-ish extension.

Again, I know it won't happen. It's that it should, it just shows we don't have a GM who understands asset management. Shipping a guy like Vanek, who even IF he has a good season shouldn't be re-signed, would get us valuable assets that will make us better in the future. It's high time we start looking forward to building a contender again, and not falling ass backwards into the playoffs. But again, I know I'm preaching to the choir, it's more likely we trade our assets to add a vet at the deadline so we can lock up that 8th seed

People think Ken Holland will trade a vet at the deadline?

It is unlikely that we do so since Vanek is likely a more capable player, but we have done it around the deadline recently:

2016: Kindl (26 - so not really a vet)

2013: Huskins

2012: Commodore

2010: Leino (27 - not really a vet)

These were all guys that didn't perform and we only got 6th or 7th rounders. I think it could be an option with Vanek if Mantha comes up and proves himself. From this list, we only send out guys that are superfluous.

Kindl was a salary dump, the other guys were never going to play a game. If Vanek ends up as the 15th forward and someone will give up a seventh, then yes. If he's contributing at all, he won't, because Kenny the Hoarder values depth over all else.

I haven't been paying much attention to Vaneks game the past couple of years but when I worked for Buffalo I got to see him play a lot. He was never known for his speed or effort defensively but when he got the puck around the net he had a very good set of hands and the ability to finish. His shot was lethal from almost anywhere. Seemed to be very successful in the shootout. He was also a threat on the powerplay, mostly in front of the net, but also with his shot. He was also really good at the high slot deflection play that Zetterberg tries from time to time. This was like 5 or 6 years ago now so I don't really know what to expect from him. Maybe a solid net front presence especially on the pp.

Thought a little about this one. I believe this is a good signing. It's a 1 year "show me" contract from a player that can deliver under the right circumstances.

It would have been a great signing if he could be had a little cheaper, say 1.8 - 2.0 million.

This has to be my favourite free agency signing. Low cost, potential for very high reward. And he's played with Nilsson in NYI, so those two could light it up together. I know Nilsson had some great things to say about him after the signing.
