Well the player is the one who has to agree to and sign an offer sheet. It's not really about that. What it is about is getting more of what you want. Probably doesn't want a long term deal and plans to leave next season.

I don't think Dekeyser wants to leave, but who knows. I think he just wants negotiations sped up or maybe wants a short term deal so he'll get paid next season.

Would probly be fine with a 5x5 deal.. I don't think he's hit his prime yet. I just hope we get him a top 2 caliber long term d partner to grow into his prime with.

I have a really hard time believing ddk filed for arbitration for anything more than a bargaining chip in getting a long term deal done. He chose to come here out of college, and immediately got top 4 minutes. Unless his only goal is to go to the team with the best chance to win a cup in the next 3 years, I don't see him leaving anytime soon.

Probably just looking for something close to the market price for his talent with the added security of term. I can see a "bridge deal" type contract just to keep his cap reasonable enough while the team maneuvers around the expansion draft, but I highly doubt he has the intention of leaving...

And if he has that thought in his head, holland will just throw him extra money and term to keep him happy anyway.

Well if he signed a long term deal now it would be something like 5 million per year since he's still an RFA. If he files for arbitration he will get a 1 year deal and then turns into a UFA next year, and he'll immediately be eligible for a lot more money. The Wings will end up re-signing him for 6-7 million per year after this year ends.

DK playing it smart. Only has one year as an RFA and probably wants his long term deal to start when he turns 27 (UFA eligible) See what I'm sayin?

Indeed.

Better to sign him to 4 plus years for $5 to $6 million per year now.

Can't anymore because he filed for arbitration and if it gets to the hearing he will only get a one year deal. That's why I said DK is playing it smart.

But yea hopefully before it even gets there (august i think?) he ends up signing a contract.

Most players have different hearing dates; sometime between July 20th and August 4th. They have not been determined yet.

They can agree to any deal the cba allows. Arbitration doesn't preclude them from agreeing to a long term deal before the hearing. If it actually gets to the hearing, then it will be a one year deal, but I doubt that happens. Other than Hunter, who did it so he'd be coming back to Detroit after his KHL stint, I think Shepherd was the last Wings player to actually get to the hearing without being signed before then.

Didn't Hudler get awarded a contract from arbitration back in 2009? Maybe I'm mistaken

edit I missed the part you mentioned about Hudler. im an idiot. Carry on...

Too bad Kenny has been burning cap space like mad signing too many forwards who aren't needed when he knows he still has to sign two players (DD,Mrazek) who are crucial to the success of the franchise now and for years to come, and hasn't done ANYTHING to improve the D. Together the two going to arbitration will get $8-$10 million a season. After that's done, then that's it, unless Kenny plans on making some trades. Everytime ANOTHER forward is signed, alot of them for more than they should be, i cringe.

Would arbitration take into account the remaining cap space? Also having Jimmy as a proven option would that come into factor with Mrazek's contract?

Idk why people are all up in arms with them filing for arbitration. It's a common occurrence especially with Holland resigning UFA's. It just shows Mrazek and DD both want to stay in Detroit at the very least

I'm not an expert on the arbitration process by any means but I think all that's taken into consideration is the players previous salary and their performance last year.. Could be wrong though.

Agreed DD and Mraz going to arbitration shouldn't be as big of a fuss as some people are making it out to be (not just on here).

Having Jimmy wouldn't be a factor. Holland has said Mrazek is the number 1 goalie this season. Looking at what Vasilevky got with Tampa still having Bishop as their number 1, and Mrazek playing alot more than Vasilevsky did last season, I think if Kenny gets Mrazek for $4 million a season, he'll have done well.

I wouldn't say it would be outrageous or crazy money, but I do think it's slight over payment. Ideally I'd like to see him somewhere around $4.5-5M for around 5+ years, but I wouldn't be at all shocked to see him get $5.5M+ to me honest...

The reason I think it's way too high is because there are currently 6 teams in the league that don't have a single Dman making that much, 13 more teams that only have 1. There are a total of 38 or so in the league. That type of money means you'd be the number 1 on most teams or at least 1 or 2. Not sure I'd put him in that spot on most teams.

We have just shy of $9M to re-sign both DeKeyser and Mrazek (with Franzen and Vitale on LTIR), which is more than enough to get both locked up. I doubt either player makes it to arbitration. We haven't had a single player make it to arbitration since '95 (Ray Sheppard).

Well Mrazek wants 5M for two years and Holland offering AAV of around 3.25M so an arbitrator most likely would award 4M @ 2 years. Pretty fair to me. Elliot Friedman tweeted the details of the offer btw that's where I'm getting my numbers from

Jiri Hudler. Right!

Hudler was a special case, that was eventually deemed invalid after returning from the KHL was it not? I remember something about it, but can't remember exactly how it all went down...

Regardless, that doesn't change the point that we have plenty cap space to sign both remaining RFA's, and it will likely happen before they reach arbitration...
