It's probably more of a 7 hour commitment. It's about 2:45 hour flight to the place and then consider his travel back from his daughters home, which is another 2:45 hour flight. Add another 2-3 hours of total customs and sitting around to board.

Comes up to 7-8 hours of travel commitments.

I think realistically the guy will probably go from seeing her maybe 3 times a year to probably 15 or so times a year. No way in hell do I think an athlete has time to travel 7-8 hours every week without his team lol.

It's a win-win situation for Datsyuk. Gets a chance at winning a KHL championship, gets to see his daughter more often.

What I don't understand is why we need to justify his actions. The guy blatantly said his dream is to finish his career in Russia. "I have finished business with Russian Olympic team" "It's time for my family to go home". "It's best for my family and I to go home".

Ken Holland "His heart isn't here anymore"

Datsyuk isn't innocent for not honoring the contract but he's not a ****** either for wanting to go home.

Can we steer back to topic at hand though

This is something I've also talked about in the Datsyuk thread.

Anyone who's played professional/college/rep hockey should understand the sacrifice that comes with it... To think that because is now only a 3 hour flight from his daughter (instead of a 12 hour flight from Detroit) is going to drastically change the relationship he would have had with her next year, is a fool. He simply wouldn't have seen her much in Detroit if he stayed, and might see her a little more now that he's gone. At the end of the day, he was contractually obligated to fulfill a commitment and he decided against it.

The excuses he made may be hard to prove wrong, but I think we all know he would have stayed if the grass was greener in Detroit.

Now, had he stayed in Detroit he's looking at another what, 24 hours round trip to what you just calculated?

I think I'm done with this site.

Well you're certainly done with making any sense.

Maybe it's a different experience with the US's airport security. I travel Montreal-Toronto regularly (yes not 2.5 hrs, but domestic so check in is the same) and I leave my place 1 hr before flight (weekdays, the airport is easy to get through). 15 min cab rides. Only a carry-on, so no baggage check. Under 2 hrs. on both sides combined. But fine, I withdraw my insanity comment. Maybe Datsyuk will live out in the boonies.

There's so many other problem's with this idea, anyway. For instance, Datsyuk as a travelling KHL player often won't even be flying out of St. Petersburg. But more than anything: St. Peterborough is wwwwwwaaaaayyyyyy closer than Detroit. Anyway, I'm going to excuse myself from all these why Datsyuk left/was he justified conversions - they're oddly infuriating and I also feel a little creepy with all the speculations about the specifics about how Datsyuk lives his private life.

I love how people say Z is done. He had 50 points last year. His role needs to change and I think he needs to fit more into Stevie's role late in his career. He isn't even close to done. That being said none of those guys listed belong in the rafters.

If you won't put 13/40 up because they never did anything of significance without Lidstrom, then let's take Yzerman's jersey off the rafters. Dude was a playoff choke artist before Feds and Lidstrom reached their primes. He was also the 3rd wheel for all 3 cups.

If you're only putting up generational talents, then only Lidstrom and Howe belong in there. Yzerman is not one.

You don't have to answer this but I would be interested to know how old you are just so I can legitimize your points. Yzerman played in the Gretzky/Lemieux era, 2 of the top 5 forwards ever. The DUDE as you call him is 7th in all time scoring and managed to carve his own path and then humbly adjusted his game for the benefit of the team late in his career. I'm 37 and if I had to list the generational talents of my youth Yzerman would 100% be on that list.

It's all going to be fine, I am the MegaMillions winner and am in negotiations to buy controlling interest in The Detroit Red Wings Hockey Club. When the transfer is complete, things will start happening! Trust me, no kicking tires!

You mean we will add Joe Morrow so we can have another d man who is exactly like 4 of the other pluggers we have on D?

Lol at Z & Pav and not Feds/Osgood. Osgood owns most the Red Wings playoff records, plus 400 wins. feds the best player on the team throughout the 90's and 3 Cup era.

91 and 30 absolutely. Especially if you're even considering 13 & 40.

Pretty much agree with this thought. Really, there is an argument to be made that all of them could/should be retired. However, Fedorov was an absolute DOMINANT player in a dead puck era and Ozzie, while benefiting from a good team around him, did make the saves needed when it mattered most. I think if the Wings had won another Cup or two while Dats and Z played (f*** you Pens) they would have a stronger argument. Neither really holds any significant records/awards though (outside of Z's Conn Smythe).

I wouldn't have a problem with all of them being retired, but #91 and probably #30 should be.

My opinion.

"Rafters" honor should be reserved for people, who are faces of the franchise.

Fedorov was great player, one of the best in NHL, but he spent 7 seasons elsewhere. He definitely deserve some kind of honors for his seasons in winged wheel, but i'm not sure if the number retirement should be one.

I will always remember Osgood in red&white, but in that time there were more great players.

Are Datsyuk and Zetterberg faces of the franchise? They are, for sure. I personaly think, that lack of trophies isn't a problem here. Let's take a Shane Doan example. He has only two trophies, but he is the face of Coyotes, and his number should be retired by them.

But I would wait a little bit with any retirement now

Without Fedorov, our 3 Cups are more difficult to win, PLUS when if he got traded here instead of Columbus, we would've beaten San Jose in 07. He was still a scoring threat on 09 as well, we may have been looking at 3 Cups in a row, it would have been at least 3 Cup finals in a row.

#91's rightful place is next in line to #5

Do you mean Anaheim?

Ya, you're right, I meant that if he got traded back here instead of Columbus he would've most definitely helped us get past Anaheim that year. If he had been acquired in 08, like he almost was, we may have been looking at back to back for sure in 08 09. My point was, if he got dealt here in 06 instead of Columbus, we may have been looking at 3 in a row, at least 3 Cup finals in a row. IMO.

I don't think so, he played a year in Anahiem and they traded him to Columbus...that's the trade being referenced I'd bet. He was never traded to Anahiem.

Edit...ha sorry, Anahiem instead of SJ...missed that one

So Fedorov would have won us the 07 and 09 cups? Oh boy ok. Talk about overrating a 40 YEAR OLD player.

Fedorov was never the same player after his prime in Detroit.

In his defence, he was great the first year after in Anaheim. His dropoff was when he was traded to Columbus post-lockout. That team was pretty horrible (except Nash's line, which I don't think Feds was ever on) and finished bottom 6-7 each year he was there. I think his pts. in the years:

05-06: 44

06-07: 42

07-08: 41

Would have been higher in a better situation (I'd add 10 with a playoff team). I think he could have had impact in 07 - not a driving force, but a support. I think he would have been 38 at that point. By the time he was in Washington he was definitely not the same player.

Edit: Then Again 38 is pretty old. I remember watching him in Washington and it was kind of sad to see his magic gone (totally understandably due to age). I didn't watch him much in Columbus - maybe that the way he was there too.

If he continues in the same role it's not going to go well as far as finishing contract is concerned.

Oh he'll finish, just not on the active roster. Too many more years, not enough left to give physically. He'll be on permanent LTIR in a couple years most likely, which by that time it will be the best thing for the team. His salary doesn't count against the cap and he won't be a liability on the ice getting outskated and outplayed by much younger players. I like Z, but the reality is he's almost done. I understand Kenny wanted him to be a Red Wing for his entire career, and so did he, but the term was too long. Not that he's making much in the final two years. I think $1 million per.

I'm not sure about LTIR. He played all 82 games last year. In order to go on LTIR someone has to get injured and be unable to play hockey. Hank isn't injured, he's just slow due to surgery (borrowed time if you will) and taken many many steps back.

True, but him being slow and struggling to make plays makes him vulnerable, and he's not a big guy. If someone lines him up and he takes a nice hit in the wrong spot, that's it. Nothing we can do but wait and see how it plays out though.

I honestly don't hope he goes on LTIR. That's the worst case scenario for a player. These guys are people after all. I'd rather Hank just retire or something and we take the hit. (I don't know what the cap penalty is but the longer a player plays the less it usually is)

It's sad what happened to Franzen, I heard the guy can't even play with long periods of time his kids and he's only 36 years old. Still has 30 or 35 good years in him and can't even go days without having headaches and lightheadedness or picking his kids up. That's awful.

Yeah. I didn't mean that i'd like to see him injured badly in a game. Just thinking that if his back problems got worse and he couldn't play anymore in another couple years, it might be for the best cap wise for the team, and for his personal safety on the ice. We all know how other teams like to take liberties with Wings players because there's nothing anyone on the team will do about it. Except maybe Ott, if he plays, Abdelkader and Smith bigger maybes, or Errorsson if he got his balls back.

Here is a goalie's career stats.

401 Wins, 50 shutouts, 2.49 GAA, .905 save pct in the regular season

In the playoffs, 74 wins, 15 shutouts, .916 save pct, 2.09 GAA.

11th all time wins, 27th all time shutouts,

2 all-star appearances, three Stanley cups, two Jennings awards.

Just looking at those stats, compared to players already in the hall, is he deserving?

If you didn't know that was Osgood, would it sway you?

Here is an article that has some career stat comparisons between Osgood, Roy, Hasek and Brodeur.

http://thehockeywriters.com/making-the-hall-of-fame-case-for-chris-osgood/

Source for stats I listed:

http://www.hockey-reference.com/players/o/osgooch01.html

That's an excellent article. It is funny that Brodeur and Roy get a pass for playing on stacked, multiple cup winning teams, but Osgood always get's accused of padding his stats because he played for the Red Wings. The guy has more playoff wins then JACQUES ******* PLANTE!!!
