Patrick Roy steps down as Head Coach and VP of Hockey Operations

Who cares about Colorado anyway. That franchise slowly lost its fan base when the Red Wings humiliated them in game 7 in 2002. They just couldn't recover after that. They signed Roy as a coach and made headlines a handful of times and now that he's gone the org will just go back to something no one cares about.

I meant Roy. As the struggles of our very own Anthony Mantha attest, dominating a bunch of teenagers in the Canadian Juniors weakest league is a far cry from being able to do so in the most elite hockey league on earth. If Roy had been a competitive AHL coach I wouldn't be saying this. But he was reasonably successful in a child's league and that was good enough for Avs management because "hey, he's Patrick Roy. The fans will love it.". Good thinking fellas.

Most head coaches come from the AHL, but I don't think it's really that uncommon for guys to come from the CHL. Therrien and Vigneault both came from QMHL like Roy and Dale Hunter was chosen by the Caps from the OHL a few years ago.

Roy was GM and owner for the Ramparts on top of doing quite well as a coach for them for 8 years. That seems like a pretty good resume to me.

Anyway, Avs did great that first year with him. I think he's the type of personality that would only work for a while as a NHL coach (rather than junior leagues where new players filter in and out each year) - kinda like Tortarella(sp?). Then again, I have no idea what he's really like in the dressing room.

I'll always remember that night...Watching the game live, and giggling as Roy couldn't stop a beach ball.

Man, must have been unbelievable to watch live, I've never watched a live game with that goal differential. Must've been really depressing to watch for Habs fans. What a thorn in Wah's side.

Hell of a goalie. Top 5 of his era, i'd say top 3 along with Brodeur and Hasek, with Belfour and Joseph behind them. As a coach, meh. Some greats are just meant to play and retire and leave the game behind, while few are able to transition very well to coaching/management/league executives. Later Patty.

Not sure I would say "meh". He had a very good career coaching in the Q, and in the NHL he has already won the Jack Adams. Sure his last 2 seasons were not the best, but lets put this in perspective, he has only coached for 3 years and he took over a team that did not make the playoffs for 3 years.

Roy being Roy, I think he needs to learn how to implement a defensive structure you can't just outscore your defensive shortcomings. Also he nedds to adopt more of a top 6 bottom 6 approach, you can't have a top 9 bottom 3 if you compete in the west, because teams like St. Louis, Kings and Ducks will push you around.

Just wait till Therrien gets the boot Roy will be the next coach of the Habs, I'm willing to bet money on that.
