Except, the first two phases had talent. ;)

Not the Swedes? Surely you think Lidstrom and Zetterberg were talented players. Holmstrom gave a new meaning to "net front presence" in the league.

Far as American era, Larkin seems promising.

Yeah, that's right. I meant the first three phases. Didn't see you put Canadians in there, though I don't think Detroit had a Canadian phase. Every team was predominantly Canadian once upon a time. Not really a phase.

Surprisingly for Detroit (since is has seemed so SWE heavy lately), Canadians have still made up the majority of the roster, even last year:

05/06 (Yzerman's last year) - only considered players who played 15 or more games:

CAN - 11

SWE - 6

US - 4

CZK - 2

RUS - 1

15/16:

CAN - 8 (2 more that played 10 games)

SWE - 5

US - 5

RUS - 2

CZK - 2

SLK - 2

FIN - 1

Well yeah... Swedish players aren't our majority lol, they were just our highest represented minority. Edited by kickazz

Which shows more of the absurdity of that "swedish mafia" article in the off-season.

I'm almost positive Z and Kronwall opted out to better prepare themselves for the start of the season

Exactly what i thought. No need to play in a pretty much pointless tournament now when you are already going to miss games during the NHL season. Save what you do have in the tank. Maybe if Z and Kronwall weren't counted on for so much when they shouldn't be at this point in their careers, they may have considered it in a limited role.

Nielsen was all over the ice in that 1st period. Got the primary assist on the goal too.

I've been watching Europe to kind of scout him. They said earlier that Detroit was going to love him. I believe we will.

I've been watching so much European hockey that sometimes I'm forgetting to root for USA.

Boy the Americans are starting out strong. Ugh. I thought "grit" was a winning recipe? Apparently skill matters a little more eh?

Things that are inexplicable to me about team USA:

1. Tortorella is the coach.

2. Byfuglien is playing offense in general, and scratched in particular.

3. None of Yandle, Kessel, Tyler Johnson, or Ryan are on the team.

Oh well. There still the USA and I'm cheering for them. I love grit by the way.

How is this not better? Oh that's right, they don't block enough shots for dumb s*** Tortorella.

Parise-Pavelski-Kane

Pacioretty-Stepan-Kessel

Ryan-T. Johnson-Wheeler

Oshie-Dubinsky-Palmieri

Suter-Byfuglien

McDonagh-Carlson

Yandle-Niskanen

Team USA has comparable talent to Canada, Sweden, and Russia on the wings, and at defense. We're definitely weaker down the middle but there's nothing we can do about that. I can't wait until Eichel, Matthews, and Larkin can play down the middle for team USA. Maybe in the 2018 Olympics.
