For the record, my point is NOT that people should not have opinions. My point is more so, lets not form such strong opinions when we really don't know.

Exactly.  Draft picks are kind of a crap shoot.  Sure they look good on their junior team, but it may not translate to the NHL.  They might be in the wrong situation.  Wrong coach.  Wrong strategy.  Wrong linemates.  I'm not a big fan of hating guys that just literally put your teams jersey on their body for the first time tonight.  Give the guy a chance to fail before calling him a failure.

Because we want to see the best player available get drafted. Not projects, which is what he has done two years in a row now. Two years in a row a gift fell into our lap (Chychrun last year, Vilardi or Liljegren this year) and he goes for projects. It's s*** drafting when it comes to decent first round picks.

I don't think "project" means what you think it means. He was ranked in the top half of the first by pretty much everyone. He's no more of a project than anyone else.

I don't like the pick either, but at least try to criticize in a way that makes some kind of sense.

He's ranked where he was by a lot of sites because of his size. Those who can look beyond that had him ranked as a late first rounder, some cases even in the second round. Holland himself more or less said he is a project and will likely take a few years of development. So please continue to tell me about how I seem to be talking out of my ass.

We obviously don't need a player right away... look at the "compete level" of our guys... I mean we are a cap team so clearly we're good right?  UGH!

I think the NHL has passed Holland by...  he seems so pensive, safe and conservative.  That St Louis move was agresive and shrewd, Klim may not work out, but it's better than wringing your hands off by yourself at your draft table.

Isn't that the opposite of what people are saying about this pick?

No not really the talk about our pick was that he's a jack of all trades master of none.  Solid not flashy, etc.

People were saying that he is a project, no where close to a sure thing, that there were much safer picks like Tippet or Vilardi available. This pick was nothing close to a "safe" pick.

Vilardi would have been the safe pick

That's not how I see it, but I can agree to disagree.  Either way the pick was very vanilla, no trades, no rumors of trades involving us (that I heard).  Our expensive, unimpressive roster looks like it's going to be back in its entirety and than makes me sad :(

I'm sure I'm not the only one that will fell a lot better if Nicholas Hague falls to 38.  Although knowing Holland...

That would be pretty great value in a 2nd rounder. We'll find out early tomorrow, there's lots of good talent on the board for our 2nd.

Kenny and his projects....

Seems pretty much every other GM takes the obvious top picks, but he has to try something different. I actually thought he'd go for one of the top D left at 9. Why did I think that?.....

If every player who needs a couple of years is a project, 95% of the draft is projects.

Like I said earlier, the key will be if his usage was because of his abilities or coach preference.

These two posts kind of prove my point. You cannot please all the fans. One person criticizing Holland for taking the "safe pick", another person criticizing Holland for not taking the safe and obvious pick.

I think when you are an elite team that has a fall, everything and anything you do is put under a microscope and scrutinized. I admit I wanted Vilardi, but I am not willing to bash the pick until I see how it plays out. Holland did an awful job drafting in the 1st a few years back (ie. Mccollum, Kindl, Sheahan), but since Mantha has done a great job (we'll have to see about Chowolski) all in all we simply have to wait until we see how this one turns out.

It is pretty funny, we draft small and the narrative becomes "another small euro, come on Holland our team is so easy to push around!!!"

We draft big and the narrative becomes "Oh thats just GREEEEAT, he has to be good because he's is big. Holland you jackass".

There really is no pleasing the fans.

More and more people are starting to show their true colors on this board. At first thought "okay maybe people are have their type of player they like and don't like small players" Now you see the same people complain about a TALL PLAYER OMG OMG OMG". Starting to show some people complain about anything just to feel good.

I like the pick. It's unlike anything we've drafted in the first round. And it fills our exact needs. A goal scorer, a PP specialist and size. I have NO clue wtf else people thought we needed. Our PP was one of the worst in the league the last 2 years and is not showing any signs of improvement wantsoever.

Gotta say I like this kid's size. If he was taking a forward first, glad it's a big one. 6'6, 220+. Christ. Hopefully he plays like it.

Guys you all need to relax. This is a good pick. For those that have been around here for a while you know I am not a big fan of Holland. But he has drafted well in the 1st round the last 5 years. Mantha, Larkin, Svechnikov, Cholowski-the one pick I disagree with, and now Rass. That is a pretty good run. Yes everyone has their favs and players they dislike. There were no 0 nadda superstars in this draft. McKenzie said it several times tonight: this draft doesn't have any future Hart or Norris trophy winners in it.

So who is Micheal Rasmussen? Yes he is 6-5/220. He is a LHed shot. he scored 30 goals in 52 games before breaking his wrist. He loves to play 15ft in out in front of the net. He will drop the gloves with anyone and win. Yes he needs 3 years to be ready. The question is-and this is true of everyone, who does he become? Is he the next Keith Premiau or the next Eric Daze? No one knows. My last posts-3 or 4 days ago I said we should take Rasmussen or Foote, but thought we would go with Vesilinan (spelling). That is 4 of the last 5 drafts that my final thoughts were correct.

Now look down the road 5 years. Our top 6 are: Mantha, Larkin, AA, Svechnikov, G Smith, and Rasmussen. That is a very good group. It has everything you need. Size, speed, skill, toughness, snipers, now a front of net guy. The only problem with this group is they are all LHed.
