So I've seen a lot of us talk about how "this coach, or that player" is extremely overrated. I thought I'd make a fun thread about it and see which one out of  the following criticized things are truly the most overrated according to LGW.com.

It's meant to be a fun thread accumulating past opinions of LGW members. Keep it civil and try not to get carried away into suspensions.

Try to expand on why you think the thing you picked is overrated.

Interesting thread. I like it! Babs should not be on there though, he is the greatest coach of this generation.

Mike Babcock.  We think so much of him we hired a guy who think's he's Mike Jr. so much he tries to speak just like him.  He might even wear the same tie.  I heard he stole it from Babs.

Babs should be replaced with Blash IMO

Kipwinger would disagree and I had to include members' popular opinions :D

I voted Toews, there is nobody IMO that gets put on a pedestal by media and fans like him.

He is a very good player, treated like the cream of the crop, best of the best.

Agreed, I voted Toews for the same exact thing. Good player but not the best. Treated as though he is because 3 cups must mean you're that good.

Apparently when it comes to Toews, hockey no longer is a team sport but  an individual one. All hail Jonathan Toews.

I also think Don Cherry is overrated. He acts like he's an expert analyst but to be honest Mickey Redmond >>>>>>>>>>> Don Cherry.

Thing = instant replay.

Player = Brent Burns.

Coach = John Tortorella.

GM = Ken Holland.

Team = Montreal.

Fair opinions, but why?

Well as overrated as I think Babcock is, and he is pretty overrated, I didn't vote for Babs.  I voted for hockey fights.  Obviously.  Only in hockey would fans, organizations, scouts, and the media fetishize a PENALTY.  Could you imagine if football players developed a "code" and backslapped each other for pass interference, spearing, or horsecollaring because it "kept guys honest"?  It's completely idiotic.

I did like your list though, except Eichel really isn't too overrated.  Nobody talks about him anymore and he's still pretty good.  I would add "grit", "veteran presence", and "crease-clearing defensemen" to the list though.

I think the issue with Eichel is some tend to group him with McDavid which is really not fair as McDavid is on an entirely different level. Well that and the weird "Eichel Tower" nickname that some have coined for him that sounds more like a porno parody title then a hockey nickname.

Poor form putting Jonny T on this list, kickazz.  Intangibles are actually the most underrated way of critically evaluating players, and Toews is chock-full of em.

I voted fights and was surprised to see someone else went in that direction, too, then saw that kipwinger was in this thread.

Kipwinger lost his roster spot on the junior high team to an enforcer.

Eichel is alright. When I hear his name I think of how Buffalo deliberately and publicly tanked hard for McDavid, icing the worst lineup possible, trading their decent goalies for horrible ones, how their fans wore McDavids name on the back of their jerseys in electrical tape.

And then how they lost the draft lottery to Edmonton, who claimed their fourth first overall pick in like five seasons. Hahaha that's karma.

+/- and advanced stats, because they're often used in isolation and are therefore more or less meaningless

"only 9 points out of the playoffs," because that still puts you last in the conference so it might as well be 50 points

getting to 100 points in the standings/being ".500", because with the loser point, it's a lot easier

speed, because if that's all you have, you're still not good.

"hard work" because nobody gets to the NHL without working hard.  A lazy NHL player is only lazy compared to other NHL players.  Compared to most people, they're insanely fit.

I mean grit and team toughness is pretty overrated. Skill trumps toughness most times but it works perfectly against teams like the Wings and Canucks. Won the Bruins a Stanley cup against a much better Canucks team

The Flyers two back to back Cups in '74-'75 were won largely by grit and toughness, and intimidation and fighting prowess by Dave "The Hammer " (348 and 472 PIM in each season) and the boys, and of course some of the best goaltending ever seen by Bernie Parent. Even their most skilled guy, Bobby Clarke, was a tough gritty leader and probably the leagues dirtiest player. That team was purposely built by management to win that way. It would never work nowadays because the game has become so PC and all about skill and goal scoring and ass kissing the latest phenom to enter the league. The whole team would be suspended after two games.
