Former Wings

Recommended Posts

Keeping track of former Wings going into the playoffs, since we won't have a playoff team this year and there's nothing else to do.

Eaves: 5 pts in 10gp with the Ducks (2nd/3rd line duties)
Pulkkinen: 1 pt in 4gp with the Yotes (4th line duties and often a healthy scratch)
Nestrasil: went back to the AHL
Jurco: 0 pts in 9gp with the Hawks (very few minutes and has been a healthy scratch)
Tootoo: 2 pts in 44gp with the Hawks (4th line duties and often a healthy scratch)
Hudler: 11 pts in 31gp with the Stars (4th line duties and often a healthy scratch)
Backman: AHL
Janmark: went back to the AHL
Kindl: 4 pts in 32gp with the Cats (-12) (7 spot so often a healthy scratch)
Vanek: 7 pts in 10gp with the Cats (-9) (3rd line duties)
Quincey: 0 pts in 9gp with the Jackets (playing the 6 spot)
Smith: 2 pts in 10gp with the Rags (+4) (playing the 2 spot)
Filppula: 3 pts in 10gp with the Flyers (-5) (2nd line duties)
Ott: 1 pt in 7gp with the Habs (4th line duties and has been a healthy scratch)
Marchenko: 2 pts in 9gp with the Leafs (7 spot so often a healthy scratch)
Jarnkrok: 28 pts in 72gp with the Preds (3rd line duties)

Did I forget anyone?

The only former Wings that seem relevant this year are Smith, Eaves, Vanek, and Jarnkrok. Shows how much junk we've had on this team.

Jarnkrok appears to be emerging as a serviceable 3rd line center
Vanek is clearly a 3rd line offensive specialist at this point (I am guilty of overhyping him while he was here)
Eaves has worked his butt off and seems like a legit top 6 forward
Not sold on Smith as a true top pairing yet, but granted I haven't seen him play with the Rags yet.

I thought Fil would be doing better as Philly's 2nd line center. Will be interesting to see if he pans out there.

The only player on this list that truly matters is BRENDAN SMITH!!! :w00t:

Good luck brother and Go Rangers!

I'd be interested to know how he's looked. Obviously they want to recapture his chemistry with McDonagh. Seems like the old Kronwall-Ericsson pairing to me, Smith playing the lesser Ericsson role. If I was the Rags I'd be using him as the puck retriever on that pair, McDonagh has injured himself a number of times skating back to retrieve pucks. If Smith is doing that for him perhaps it's working out.

CRL you should update this list once or twice a year, it's a gold resource for LGW.com

That was my plan

So should we be praising Holland for moving these players, or criticizing him for having these players in the first place?

And what happened to Hudler?  He had 76 points in Calgary in 2015.  Did he get hurt?

I think he was hurt at some point this season. Hudler was played in CGY like Eaves was played in DAL, next to the 2 best players on the team. Now hes getting bottom 6 minutes and not producing. Both guys need to be paired with high end players to be effective. Kinda like Homer

Well most of these players we got when we were a good team and had s***tier draft picks, not really anyone's fault. Some of the others we traded away for some nice draft picks.

The way I see it, we shed some bad players for sure. Need to rid some more, and go back to high standards.

I've always liked the guy too.  He made some silly mistakes sometimes, but he was incredibly underrated at getting the puck from the opponent and distributing it to our boys.  Sometimes its was pretty incredible what he did under pressure, to be honest.

Fixed dude.

Some comments on Smith from Rags boys:

Quote

He's been quietly good. He does his job and you don't notice him.

I dont notice him often, but when I do he is normally doing something positive. So he has been good so far.

He's definitely an improvement over Kevin Klein and Dan Girardi

I like him. He's good at zone entries, which we desperately need from our D-men, but he's due about one bad turnover or penalty a game, it seems.

I am kind of polarized about him. I don't know the exact stats, but I know he has taken a few penalties, and while sometimes that happens, it would be great if he could keep the PIM down. But besides that, I haven't noticed him much which is fine for a defensemen.

Lot of positive comments here... Every time I've noticed him he's either missed an assignment, taken a penalty, or mishandled the puck. I guess I haven't been feeling particularly positive about him.

Sounds like they don't have a great read on him yet. Most admit to not noticing him at all. Pretty mixed reviews. I think many are just happy to have someone step in and log big minutes with some of their D-men injured.

Another comment about Smith I found

Quote

He actually only ended up paired with McDonagh the first game or two after he came over. Our D pairs have been - McD-Staal, Holden-Smith, Skjei-Kampfer/Clendenning. Very curious to see what will happen when both Klein and Girardi are healthy as I have a real hard time seeing AV sitting either of those guys in the playoffs.

He seems to be primarily a defensive defenseman who skates very well for his size and knows how to make a solid first pass.

I always pick McDonagh in Fantasy Hockey. He's always a steady option (around 35-40 assists, 40 PIMS, 15 PP points, +19), but he's been slipping the past two seasons. I had some hope that maybe Smith would get the pairing with him and it he would push McDonagh with his youth. The downside is Brendan likes to jump into the play, which McDonagh does as well, but you can't have both guys on your D-pair jump in on offense. So I'm not exactly sure where Brendan ends up in their pairings.

According to Rangers fans he only played with Mcdonagh the first game or so. Been on the 2nd pair since.

Wish we never got rid of Eaves - a true grinder with actual scoring ability

Can't say it enough, hated losing Eaves. Heart and soul player with skill. If not for the goofy injuries, I think heblikey would've developed more of a role here.

I still remember that slap shot to the face....one of the most cringe worthy injuries I have ever seen.
