Game 6 of the SCF was his last in he NHL. Went to Europe after that and played a few more years before hanging them up in 2012. He says he is dealing with post concussion symptoms from his playing days and is part of the class-action lawsuit against the NHL over concussions. Reading through his wiki the guy sounds like a total doosh-canoe who burned every bridge available to him. Sounds like coaches and teammates didn't care for him. Bouncing around the NHL like he did sounds like he may have had some issues (granted some 'star' players were moved around often back then too, but that was because their talent was in demand). He's got some bar fights on his record too (I have a feeling drugs/alcohol played a role) IDK if he's mentally ill or not, but he sounds like a self-sabotager fersure. He also blew through about $15 million. If anyone is interested I just watched the TSN segment, here it is: Joe Murphy Yup, drugs were DEFINITELY involved. Was supposedly a normal family man during the height of his career. Then he took some hits to the head and "changed as a player" (they specifically cite a hit from Shawn Burr as the cause) and also his general behavior changed. He then started doing drugs and cut himself off from all his friends/associates in the league and moved to Columbia, then Peru (his career had ended). If you watch the segment he is clearly a heavy former/active cocaine user. I've known more addicts in my life than I'd like to admit, and IMO it's dead on cocaine addiction. His choices on wear to live after he messed up his career are pretty telling as well. Anyway the TSN segment definitely paints the picture that the concussions are what led to his drug use and therefore his demise. Brain injury can definitely lead to behavioral changes and even increased desire to abuse drugs, but I doubt it's so clear cut. This guy was probably using coke way before any injuries occurred. Maybe the head trauma caused him to lose control, maybe he was already on that path anyway and the concussions are coincidental. Who knows. Morale of the story: Cocaine is a helluva drug. Good news is, after TSN shed light on the story, sounds like a lot of players have reached out to help him. Not sure how much they can help at this point, but it's somethin.
