Honestly, you shouldn't even need to quote the obvious. I'll never understand the folks who get upset about random missed draft picks.

Yep. You don't think the North Stars and Whalers wanted a redo of the 83 draft? Or the 10 teams who passed on Lidstrom in the 3rd round and Fedorov in the 4th round of the 89 draft?

Was watching the 2008 Championship DVD when I caught a glimpse of Mark Hartigan. Totally forgot about that guy, career tweener. Game 6 of the SCF was his last in he NHL. Went to Europe after that and played a few more years before hanging them up in 2012.

I think his last NHL game would've been in the 2nd round or so that year.  If he had played in the SCF, his name would be on the Cup, right?

Former Michigan State player and first overall draft pick by the Red Wings in 1986 (first collegiate player to ever go #1), Joe Murphy, is homeless living on the streets in Ontario

No idea if drugs or alcohol is involved. He says he is dealing with post concussion symptoms from his playing days and is part of the class-action lawsuit against the NHL over concussions.

Reading through his wiki the guy sounds like a total doosh-canoe who burned every bridge available to him. Sounds like coaches and teammates didn't care for him.

Correct. He did not play enough regular season or playoff games to qualify. But he was on the roster thru to the last finals game, which would be his last as an NHL player, although he didn't play in it.

THE ENTIRE 1ST ROUND OF THE 1989 DRAFT

via celebrityhockeyclassics.com

If there’s one draft the Maple Leafs could go back in time and select all over again, hands down, it would be 1989, and more specifically, that entire first round. After some wheeling and dealing, the Leafs owned not one and not two, but three selections in that year’s opening round and what should have been a very bright future with all the inbound young talent.

Unfortunately, that talent never materialized. The Leafs picked 3rd, 12th and 21st in the overall, taking forwards Scott Thornton and Rob Pearson and defenseman Steve Bancroft respectively. Altogether, those three players combined played 225 games for Toronto, scoring just 95 points. In fact, Bancroft only played in six NHL games his entire career.

Oh, and the guys in that same draft the Leafs could have picked? Just some no-namers like Sergei Fedorov, Pavel Bure, Nicklas Lidstrom, Adam Foote.

This did not copy and paste well. LOL. Pretty much all of the Leafs drafts up until the last few were dreadful.

Included on team picture, but left off the Stanley Cup

#44 Mark Hartigan (C – played 23 games, 4 playoff games of Detroit, 48 games in the minors) – was left off for the 2nd year in row for not playing in the last 2 rounds of the playoffs.

#52 Jonathan Ericsson (D – played 8 games for Detroit, 69 games in the minors),

#4 Kyle Quincey (D – played 6 games for Detroit, 66 games in the minors),

#35 Jimmy Howard (G – played 4 games for Detroit, 54 games in the minors),

#8 Justin Abdelkader (LW – 2 games for Detroit, 48 games for Michigan State University.),

#43 Mattias Ritola (LW – played 2 games for Detroit and 72 games in minors),

#46 Jakub Kindl (D – played 76 in minors, no games for Detroit),

Sergie Tchekmarev (Team Masseur), Lynn Newman (Massage Therapist)

– All 9 members were left off the Stanley Cup, but received Stanley Cup Rings.

Bouncing around the NHL like he did sounds like he may have had some issues (granted some 'star' players were moved around often back then too, but that was because their talent was in demand).

Mental illness might be a factor here...

He's got some bar fights on his record too (I have a feeling drugs/alcohol played a role)

IDK if he's mentally ill or not, but he sounds like a self-sabotager fersure.

He also blew through about $15 million. I have sympathy for the homeless, but a little less so when they used to be multi-millionaires

If he's not mentally ill or legitimately suffering from life altering concussion symptoms, it's insanely comical. Rejected by girl, beat up by her boyfriend, demoted, suspended, fails to qualify for worker's comp. Fast forward post career, forced to take a leave of absence from his coaching position because of controversy involving trespassing, homeless. It's so catastrophic it doesn't sound real.

I mean, he was mentally competent and professional enough to attend a Big10 university and become a 1st overall draft pick. Once the money rolled in he seems to go off the rails.

He accused a General Manager of partially sawing his sticks in half and chucking his skates in a river.... Maybe the dude is looney.

It's possible he was on (and taking meds) at that time, but as we all know you can only do so much to help someone (short of having them 'institutionalized').

If anyone is interested I just watched the TSN segment, here it is: Joe Murphy

Yup, drugs were DEFINITELY involved. Was supposedly a normal family man during the height of his career. Then he took some hits to the head and "changed as a player" (they specifically cite a hit from Shawn Burr as the cause) and also his general behavior changed. He then started doing drugs and cut himself off from all his friends/associates in the league and moved to Columbia, then Peru (his career had ended). If you watch the segment he is clearly a heavy former/active cocaine user. I've known more addicts in my life than I'd like to admit, and IMO it's dead on cocaine addiction. His choices on wear to live after he messed up his career are pretty telling as well.

Anyway the TSN segment definitely paints the picture that the concussions are what led to his drug use and therefore his demise. Brain injury can definitely lead to behavioral changes and even increased desire to abuse drugs, but I doubt it's so clear cut. This guy was probably using coke way before any injuries occurred. Maybe the head trauma caused him to lose control, maybe he was already on that path anyway and the concussions are coincidental. Who knows. Morale of the story: Cocaine is a helluva drug.

Good news is, after TSN shed light on the story, sounds like a lot of players have reached out to help him. Not sure how much they can help at this point, but it's somethin.
