A car just ran down protestors who were marching against these white nationalist about an hour ago and killed at least 1. Good that the Wings condemn the misappropriation of the symbol and the group. Crazy that they would use a hockey team's logo.

Just a friendly reminder that politics specifically are not allowed as topics of discussion here on LGW.  Granted, that may be a tough line to walk given the nature of this story and the use of the Winged Wheel logo.  But please try to remember that this is a Red Wings/Hockey based forum, and not a political one.

Discussion of these groups' use of the Red Wings logo is welcomed and encouraged.

Discussion of the groups' viewpoints, beliefs, values, presidential choices, etc, are NOT allowed.  Posts such as these can and will be deleted swiftly.  There are no shortage of political based discussion/message boards on the internet.  One of those are better suited to that kind of discussion.

Thank you.

this outfit has got what they wanted thou, all the publicity in the world by using a very global symbol in the Wingedwheel. If they had used the LA KIngs or Columbus BJ logo only NA or diehard hockey fans would have know what it was, using the Redwings logo has given them worldwide coverage they sought. Sad times we live in and the world just seems to go from bad to worse really, I dread to think what itll be like in 50 years.

I think running a car into a crowd of people and the underlying racial tension is more the reason for the publicity than the use of the winged wheel.  It is frustrating and a bit odd seeing it though.  I don't get the reason for using it.

I think that excluding maybe Scandinavia & central/east Europe, very few people globally outside of the hockey community would even know the Red Wings logo.

The world wide coverage came regardless, what with a killing and all, along with the orange haired tweeting man.

could some explain though, why are they using the logo in the first place?

No reason really, as far as I know, aside from someone thinking "Detroit Right Wings" is a clever play on words.

Some part in the middle east and China probably where they are promoting ice hockey quite a bit.

So nobody knows why they used the winged wheel?  I'm genuinely interested to know.

Not sure if it's going to turn political. It shouldn't since I'm going to answer his question. If so delete the post I guess.

Two possible reasons Per Jedi:

1 - There's a Michigan/Detroit based group calling themselves the "Detroit Right-Wings", and they're using the Wings logo as their own, especially on their twitter and other social media pages

2 - Modified version of the logo for the Deutsche Reichsbahn (German Railroad) that was used in WWII/Holocaust. Patches 1 and 2: http://antique-photos.com/en/unidatabase/third-reich/431-specialist-patches-of-reichsbahn.html

Now that's some serious diving for information. I always like to be surprised, this was a nice one, thanks for the link.

They weren't doing that when this team was good.  Thanks a lot Kenny.

I've never understood Americans using the Nazi's symbols to represent freedom.  We fought a pretty big war to get rid of those a-holes, and fascism is pretty much opposite to our ideals.

That being said, the "antifa" movement is using all the old fashioned fascist ideas to force everyone into their way of thinking.  Both sides can just GTFO.
