Really like this move for EDM, depending how much salary is retained. But if Neal can be back to how he was before the flames, they might finally have a solid winger for McDavid.

Will be interesting to see how much of Lucic's salary Holland is retaining. Not sure how much this makes sense for Calgary... trading with your biggest rival as well.
That said, If Holland retains a lot of salary and Neal doesn't tun things around... he may have just compounded an already bad problem.

As per TSN

A pair of forwards are switching allegiances in the Battle of Alberta. The Edmonton Oilers have traded Milan Lucic and a conditional third-round pick in 2020 to the Calgary Flames for James Neal. The Oilers will retain 12.5 per cent of Lucic's $6 million salary, worth $750,000.

On the HOF boards (at least first few pages), Edmonton fans seem pretty pumped, Calgary fans seem pretty pissed.

Lucic is old news

Red Wings have had varying degrees of bad contracts (Nielsen, Abdelkader, Ericsson, Daley) on the books for the past several years. Holland doesn't do a damn thing to get rid of any of them. Goes to Edmonton and immediately trades the worst contract in the NHL. I think this once again proves that there are no untradeable players / contracts. Also, Holland did show too much loyalty to some underperforming players. I'm hoping this is one area that changes under Yzerman...

This isn't a defense of Holland, but rather an observation. I do think that it is much easier to trade a player if you just walked in to become GM, opposed to trading a player that you personally signed, and quite possibly said things like "we want you to finish your career as a Wing" to. Not that Holland said that, but I have to think that things like that have to factor in on your decision making. Also, in Edmonton they are in win-now mode with McDavid, here we were re-building where I'm sure the urgency to move a contract like that was significantly less.

With that said, I agree with your point. Yzerman coming in means he has no emotional ties to any player, and that's probably a good thing.

Except Val Filppula, Yzerman loves him some Val Filppula.

Doesnt matter. Stevie has big plans. Hes not signing anyone past 2 years when a large majority of contracts are up. Hes planning a proper overhaul. Were going to be a dynasty again. All the anti yzerman people are going to choke on their words...

I like Connor, but AA, Bowey, and a 1st seems like someone's pipe dream.

AA at $3m for another season is a relative bargain for a 30g guy. Connor will likely get moar dinero, albeit for better production historically.

The deal would make more sense if Connor was signed to a team friendly contract first.

If we're going after "one of Larkin's best friend's", I'd prefer to go after Werenski...

Yeah, Red Wings are not giving up next years 1st.

There's no way the Red Wings are giving up next year's 1st round pick, but they may eventually dangle their 2021 1st round pick (which was the pick mentioned in this trade). We'll likely be a lottery team again this season, but I can definitely see this team making a strong push for a playoff spot next season.

I agree. A little too rich for my liking. Not saying that it's not fair value, because it just may be, but not a trade I'd feel too comfortable making at this point in the rebuild.

TBH, I didn't even read far enough to see that was the "reported" offer. Hoo boy. The internet is a magical place.
