I can't wait until he bails to Arizona when his contract is up. Leaf tears are the best tears. You think Islander fans were rough on JT? Ain't seen nothing yet.

I don't see it. He's treated like a golden god in Toronto, and he has Marner to thank for his huge production. Would be a bad move on his part IMO.

I agree, but I thought this ever since he signed his last deal to just take him right to UFA. Maybe he did fall in love with Toronto and will stay. But at that time, it really seemed like Arizona was in his plans. Of course, I'm just really hoping it happens here, as nothing is more fun than watching Leaf fans suffer.

Shortened season though.  Plus, they're only playing against six opponents all year.  That skews all stats in this bizarre season.

Exactly. Not likely McDavid gets 150 points next year.

But Mathews is without a doubt the league's new best goal scorer.

He's been living in Ovi's shadow, but is easily the best goal scorer in the league outside of him.

Goal scoring rate since 2016-17 (the year Matthews entered the league)

  1. Matthews: 0.5981
  2. Ovechkin: 0.5742
  3. Pastranak: 0.5132
  4. Kucherov: 0.5032
  5. McDavid: 0.4944
  6. Draisaitl: 0.4794
  7. Marchand: 0.4712
  8. Crosby: 0.4471
  9. Tavares: 0.4369
  10. Bergeron: 0.4236

If Matthews just maintains his current pace (it seems to be increasing) and there are no major man games lost or work stoppages, he will pass Grets at age 37 and eclipse 1000 goals by age 40

Unsustainable.

After 1986-87, Gretzky was scoring at over a 1.0 GPG clip. People could have predicted 1000 goals by 31 years of age. He retired at 38 with 894.

To be fair Matthews is nowhere near Ovi's rate in his first 5 seasons which was 0.67.

Not sure Matthews will have the incredible health and longevity of Ovi either.

Gretzky's goal scoring was never the same after his injury in the early 90's.  Yes, the game changed, but not until 1997 or 1998.  At his former pace before the injury, he would have feasted on the high scoring seasons of the early to mid 90's.  He still led the league in points during the decade, but the goal scoring suffered.

I think 3 of those top 10 play on the same line!

5 years, 9.5 mil per.

Lets say he gets 35 goals/year over the next 5 seasons.  That puts him at 905 total going into the 26-27 season at 41 years old.  5 more years to get to 1000 at 20 goals per season.

Not gonna happen.

Cut me in on this action Scott

That Ovechkin will get to 1000 goals? Yes, get me in on this action as well.

He MIGHT break Gretzky's record. No way he hits 1000. LOL

You can count the number of guys who played in the NHL past the age of 45 on the right hand of Jason Pierre-Paul.

You can also put 2 of 3 them in the top 5 all time goals container.  Chelios and Robinson are multiple Norris winners,, to boot.
