Why resign him? Why waste the money/cap/roster spot? We are not a team fighting for the PO's or cup. We are rebuilding! We dont need more below-average NHL players that are being overpaid. We need to move those guys!

I'll ignore the nonsense about Green being below average...  But let's just say we don't re-sign him? Who's taking his spot? We don't have a single defenseman in the system ready to take over that role. Free agency? Carlson isn't going to be available. Who else is there?

I dont get why you are so against signing Green, but want us to waste money on a guy like de Haan. Green is a very good offensive D-man, and I would love it if guys like Hronek and Cholowski were able to play with him.

As for the  "below average" part. Please explain? I can't see how you can justify this one.

He currently ranks 36th in points for a D-man, and I believe he is top 30 if you look at PPG (taking out the guys who have not played alot of games). Each NHL team has 6 D-men playing each night which translates to 186 D-men. I get that points are not everything for a D-man, but how can you say a top 36/186 guy is "below average".

If every defenseman played equal minutes, they'd all have 20 min a night (assuming no OT).  So, if he's eating "almost 20 min a night", he'd be below the average.  The top guys used to log 30+ min a night, but I think that's come down a bit over the years as the speed of the game has increased.

Yeah I f***ed up some maths or something there lol

Lidstrom is way better than Potvin.

This is what I'm talking about with the defensiveness. I get that your threatened loud and clear, relax.

When Mike Green - a player who's probably a top 4 offensive specialist - is your #1 Dman, eating almost 20 minutes a night, your team has a real problem. Even Lidstrom was like 17 to 18 minutes a night in his prime.

Lidstrom ATOI was never less than 23:28 a night from 99 to 2012....

I'd resign him if , we can't get anyone better in the off season, but nowhere near what he's on now.

Problem is Kenny will look at what he's paid our other overpaid D, say Green is the best of the bunch and won't be able to stop himself in making him the highest earner on the blue line. So in that he will offer him a 2 year deal at $5.5m and thus undoing the good work he did in freeing up over $5m cap in the Tatar deal.

Not sure where the cap relief would come from though, Howard and Nyquist just may be a couple of nice chips to sell at the next TDL. Especially if one of our young G's take the next step forward.

He'd have to trade another player with term, which really would only be Helm or Dekeyser that would help us with significant Cap relief. I don't think anyone would take Abby's contract. Maybe Nielsen, he has a MNTC starting next season, but they ALL pretty much control where they end up, if anywhere.

Didn't the Leafs come in for Green with a 1st and 3rd round offer?

Out of the 292 D used in the NHL to date Green is 39th in scoring , he is however 260th in + - , saying that OEL who a lot of fans want on the roster is dead last in this category with -36 and the Sens stud Karlsson is 290th. Saying that, only Kronwall has a worse +- on the Wings D than Green.

Green isn't below average, but he's a lot closer to average than good.  Honestly, the games I've seen, Daley has looked better.  He hasn't scored as much but doesn't get the PP time either.

Daley has more goals than Green. Green is deployed in offensive situation and Daley mostly in defensive. Daley is underrated around here and Green is slightly overrated

You used to be on the Oduya train.  He just got waived.

You must have the wrong guy.

The only non Red Wing player I like is Anze Kopitar, maybe Ovechkin.

And I think Stamkos is good looking.

I don’t know how the defense would even function without Green throughout a whole season. How are we going to insert Hronek/Cholo into the lineup with a train wreck like that and ask them to run the PP and push offense? #1 priority is trying to get these young players to hit their ceilings.

to sum it up, if they are interested in re-signing Green, they better get REAL interested in cutting more Cap this summer. They won't be able to re-sign him if the Cap doesn't go up. We can forget about having any cap to entice JT, and if Holland doesn't cut cap, he can forget about Mike Green.

Or he'll sign Green and have no money for one of the young guns. Which one is it going to be? Larkin, Mantha or AA that it sacrificed for Green if Holland refuses to dump cap, like Howard or Nyquist? IMO, Both Howard and Nyquist should be gone before the season starts.

Wouldn't you prefer to get more assets at the trade deadline? Over the summer I cant see the return being anything special.

Also, the cap is going up. Around 3-7mil.

I think some of you guys are lowballing Green on his next contract.

Just to do some comparables, I picked out 5 guys currently under contract who are near Green's point totals and age.

Mike Green: 29 points, age 32, 6.0 AAV

Alex Goligoski: 30 points, age 32, $5.475 mil AAV

Marc-Edouard Vlasic: 29 points, age 30, $4.25 AAV

Justin Braun: 27 points. age 30, $3.8 mil AAV

Jeff Petry: 31 points, age 30, $5.5 mil AAV

Duncan Keith: 28 points, age 34, $5.538 AAV

Average AAV among the 5 players I listed is $4.91 mil. Considering all of them signed their contracts before last season, and with the overpayment last summer of dmen, I wouldn't be surprised to see Green get a fair 3 year deal at $5 mil AAV. He'll be 35 when the contract is up, and probably still one of our best defenseman.

Thanks for the welcome :)  LOL I will certainly not try to be a retread.

By retread, I meant someone who was banned and rejoined under a new name. There are also some who post in here under multiple user names. Not that I mind however, we need all the posters we can get!

I agree, and I'd be okay with another 3 year deal in the neighborhood of $5M per, but I'd prefer 2 years, or even better again, 1 year at a slightly higher cap hit. I know Green probably wouldn't go with a one year deal, but he should, seems how he f***ed us out of assets this year...
