It said in the article I read they will be off the hook for the entire cap hit

That's ridiculous. You shouldn't be able to end a contract and not suffer some cap hit implications. Even if its a mutual termination.

I think CapFriendly is just doing what they can to explain the situation.  There's gotta be more going on below the surface.  If Buffalo and their fans think that that money and cap hit are magically going to disappear.  I think they're sadly mistaken.  If it does just magically go away, I think there are plenty of teams that should file grievances.

As far as this specific situation, Buffalo hasn't liked Berglund's play or his production, so he's been used sparingly and healthy scratched. Berglund doesn't like that so he's not showing up to work.

To me it seems like this move was made to get things started before the Holiday Roster freeze and to make a point to Berglund -- that he can't just not show up.

Obviously Berglund doesn't like his situation... and maybe he's tried to make his case and he felt that his issues weren't being heard or taken seriously.

There's more to come on this story for sure.

That seems like a huge loophole in the cba if it is possible.

The other thing to keep in mind, I don't think most players are willing to give up and walk away from $12 million dollars in actual salary.

There's definitely something else to this story.

I can't remember the rules with the latest CBA, but with the last one, if the player was under 35 when signing the contract, player and team could walk away from the contract and not have cap implications (i.e. it went away).  This protected from a team signing a 35 year old to an 8 year deal to lower the cap, knowing he wouldn't play the full 8 years.

You can put a player on unconditional waivers for the purpose of mutual contract termination?

Why didn't we do this with datsyuk?

Like Toby says; 35+ clause. Even if we'd have terminated the contract, we'd still have had the cap hit since he was over 35.

Not really, I'm sure it'd be pretty rare for both sides in a contract to agree to terminate. Maybe it could lead to making the cap recapture rule apply to any contract rather than just long-term, but besides that the NHL has no reason to care. Vadim Shipachyov's contract was terminated last year; no one batted an eye at that.

Heartbreaking piece on Franzen's continued (and worsening?) daily struggles:

Red Wings' Johan Franzen fights depression: 'It quickly gets dark. Very dark.' [The Detroit News]

Quote

In the SportsExpressen interview, Franzen talks about the difficulty retaining any memory and his struggles with PTSD.

Franzen said he can easily understand anyone caught up in substance abuse.

Franzen said late in his career, he “started getting concussions from nothing. But I kept a lot secret. I could stop on the roadside on my way home after games and have a panic attack. I sat crying for an hour by the side of the road. No one knew about it.”

The issues with memory frustrate Franzen.

“It’s embarrassing,” a tearful Franzen said. “I can be speaking with somebody one night and the next day forget that person. The brain didn’t….get it in. So, it’s…hard.

“It’s embarrassing. Everything is embarrassing. Now I’m very open about being forgetful.”

Franzen has visited numerous doctors and specialists in the world of concussions and last spring visited the Brain Health Institute.

“Sometimes my whole world falls apart,” said Franzen, “and I can’t see the light at the end of the tunnel.

“Most of the time I think I am moving in the right direction, but when I have down periods there is nothing positive. I almost give up then and it is even worse because you think you have been better for a while.”

:(

First no Hockeytown at center ice, then retiring jersey number, and now 3rd jerseys. What is going on here?

Chris Ilitch, I assume.

The 3rd will probably just be a Winter Classic retread tho. I'm expecting a minor variation on the "candy cane stripes" one.
