Suddenly I want to trade Ras and Green for a power-forward LW

Primeau always wanted to be a top 2 center even though there were these guys by the name of Yzerman, and  Fedorov who were clearly better than him.

At least Bowman was able to ship him off to Hartford as part of a package for Shanahan - a true LW power forward.

What do you expect them to say? "There's no way Michael Rasmussen has what it takes to be an NHL center"? Of course not. He was drafted as a center, they'd be dumb not to at least try him there. That doesn't mean it will work out though... I personally see him better suited on the wing, but if he becomes a legit shutdown 3C I guess it won't be the worst thing...

If he becomes a 3c shutdown guy after we spent a top 10 pick on him when you consider the dmen that were available and how we been a disaster at that position since lidstrom left it would be a bust pick for me

hope he proves me wrong and excels and at least becomes a 25 goal Ppl net front specialist but with the likes of veleno, zadina, berggren and likely a top 5 pick next season I fear your right and he will be a bottom 6 guy

Ok,  ill accept your premise for a second.    But if Rasmussen's skill set is so obviously conducive to playing on the wing, why do you think both Yzerman and Blashill see Rasmussen as a center?

WTF why can't I private message you? It says "Kipwinger cannot receive messages"

Fix this

On a side note...The Alumni Game totally baited me. I get to the game, and what do I see? A home white jersey skating around with 'FEDOROV' on the back. I was stoked. "Feds is here!" Then I noticed the 91 was an 81. "That's strange", I thought. I then zoomed in on my camera to take a better look. As it turns out, it wasn't false advertising. It was the correct name on the jersey. But it wasn't Sergei. It was friggin Fedor. Who never played for the Wings. WTH is he doing here? Is this some sort of consolation prize? Did Feds bail on them and send his lil bro instead? Not cool. Why not bring in Wayne Primeau? Or Nikos Tselios? Hey..why not Brent Gretzky or Bart Hull? Not cool.

I'm not really following your logic here.  Yzerman had no problem saying that he saw AA as a long term winger despite the fact that Athanasiou was drafted as a center, played center in the AHL, and played reasonably well as a center last year.  Why would he treat Rasmussen any differently?  Unless he genuinely doesn't see Rasmussen as a winger down the line.  And if that's the case, why do you think you and Steve Yzerman don't agree on his suitability to play center? What do you think you're seeing that Yzerman and Blashill don't?

Athanasiou has played a bit of both C/W in the OHL, AHL, and NHL. As of right now, they see Athanasiou as a better winger than center. I don't necessarily agree. Rasmussen has played a bit of both C/W in the WHL, but primarily wing in the NHL. They clearly want to see if he can become a good center at the NHL level. I see no harm in trying him there, but in the end, I think he's better suited on the wing. Maybe they will as well in a year's time... Since when do we need to agree with everything the coach and general manager do / say?

If I had to pick one to be our 3C and the other to be a middle six winger, right now, I'd choose Athanasiou at center and Rasmussen on the wing. Maybe that's how it ends up. Maybe the opposite. Maybe they both become wingers. Maybe both centers... Who knows...

I'm not saying you need to agree with them.  I'm just asking why you don't.  If they don't think his foot speed will stop him from being an NHL center, and they clearly don't or they wouldn't be projecting him there, then I'm wondering why you do?  Surely you have a rationale?

I'm also doubly confused because as I recall you were really high on Gabe Vilardi in the same NHL draft that we took Rasmussen, and he's no great skater, but I've never heard you suggest he would have been anything over than a center because of his speed.

I mentioned his skating, but it's not just about that. Like I also said, I think he would be a great winger, because he's great along the boards, in the corners and in front of the net, and that's where wingers typically spend the majority of the game...

What does Vilardi have to do with any of this? I was very high on Vilardi, but it had nothing to do with the position he played. There's a very real possibility that if we had taken Vilardi (and he had stayed healthy), I would have been saying the exact same thing about him (I'd prefer him on the wing), that I'm saying about Rasmussen.

He has a number of qualities which would make him a great center too.  He's defensively responsible, good in the face-off circle, protects the puck well, and is a great passer.  He'll get his net front looks on the PP anyway, so no worries there.  He's also been a center for the majority of his life, so there's no learning curve.

I bring up Vilardi because he's slower than Rasmussen, and you liked him ,and you never once questioned his ability to be an NHL center in all the lauding you did of him.  So I was just curious why you didn't have the same "slow footed" worries about him as you do about Ras, but it sounds like you're suggesting that you might have those same worries now so no need to go further down that rabbit hole.

"Good in the face-off circle"? Based on what? His 35% success rate last season?

Why would I question his ability to become an NHL center when I don't think teams should ever draft based solely on position? At the time I thought Vilardi was the better player, whether that was as a center or winger. There was nothing more to it than that. Had he not gotten injured, maybe he would have been. Maybe he still will be. Maybe not.

Based on his history of being a good faceoff guy throughout his career.  Even Larkin wasn't good at faceoffs as a 19 year old in the NHL, so I'm not really concerned with his rookie stats.  He's always shown a willingness and commitment to the finer points of being a center.

For the 3rd time, I'm only bringing up Vilardi because you seemed to think he's the "better player" and never had serious questions about his game despite him being pretty slow.  And the reason I'm focusing on the "slow" thing is because it's the only part of your rationale that makes sense to me.

If I'm understanding your sentiments correctly you seem to think Rasmussen is better suited for the wings because A) he's too slow to be a good center, and B) he's got some qualities that would make him a good winger like a net front presence and ability to win board battles.  I'm having a hard time understanding this logic because:

  • Rasmussen isn't really slow.
  • You haven't had similar concerns about other slow players' ability to play center in the NHL.
  • There are tons of good centers who aren't especially fast.
  • And, lots of centers have qualities that would make them good wingers. That doesn't mean they shouldn't be centers.  Larkin, for instance, was a great winger his rookie season.  A much better one than Rasmussen has been FWIW.  Thank god the coaching staff and GM preferred to keep him at his natural position.

I just hope Moose turns out to be worth a 9th overall draft pick, regardless of what forward position he plays.

The kid's going to be awesome, they just were in a tough spot in terms of his development last year.  In two years that kid will be squating like 600 lbs, he'll be impossible to move, his mitts and passing are already nice, and he's a super intense guy.  He's going to be a monster to deal with.  He'll be Martin Hanzel with better scoring.  Yikes.

So, uh, is it just me or is it looking like the Griffins are going to be absolutely stacked? Like, so much so that I'm wondering if there isn't going to be a bit of a crunch going on there.

Not sure about forwards, but looking at D, yes. Assuming Green, TD, DD, E, Hronek, Bowey, and one of Chokowski or Seider makes the Wings...that potentialy leaves Seider/Cholowski, MacIsaac, Saarijarvi, McIlrath, Lashoff, Kaski, Lindstrom to play in GR depending on who goes back to juniors and Europe.

Edit: Forgot about the little guy - Hicketts.

I vaguely remember hearing McIsaac would be spending another year in the Q. Even so, that's pretty crowded. And, personally, I'm expecting both Cholowski and Seider to start in GR.

I don't have a solid grasp on the Griffins' forward situation, but it sure feels like that group is also going to be crowded as hell, assuming the top prospects all start in GR.

If you PM me near the start of any game, I can usually send you a stream of it.

I probably won't be able to find every Griff game, but when I do get them they're normally pretty high quality.
