Really hoping Soderblom makes the team. The potential matchup issues this kid is going to cause for other teams is going to be tremendous.

Imagine you staple him to the top line with Larkin. Opposing teams won't be able to deploy their smallish top Dmen against our top forward line. Dmen like Hughes, Makar, Krug, etc. They wont be able to handle his sheer size and strength. As long as this kid isnt timid. Doesnt have to be mean. Just not timid.

Not to mention, this isnt a Rasmussen situation either. This kid has way more skill AND benches a whopping 300 lbs. Other teams will be forced to deploy their bigger, stronger, slower Dmen against our top line. Guys like Zadorov, Chara, Oleksiak, etc. This could be a scoring buffet for our top line.

Vrana - Larkin - Soderblom

Bertuzzi - UFA - Raymond

All of the sudden we have a deep top 6.

Fabbri - Rasmussen/Veleno/Suter - Berggren

And a 3rd scoring line ready to come into its own.

If SY can sign some decent Dmen and Eddog performs as billed - we could have an exciting season ahead of us.

The Swedes are coming

Agreed.

Only thing Id change is keep Rayzor on L1 with Larks and Soderblom.

I dont know how to quote tweets but..... Lucas Raymond & Simon Edvinsson doing offseason training together in a rainy Gothenburg backyard.

Edvinsson is joining a training group that other than Raymond also included Kevin Fiala last summer.

Cossa is winning games on a dominant team but hes been far from dominant. .905sv% this past week and .909 so far in the playoffs is hardly worth getting excited over.

This is the player equivalent of a 15oa drafted f in his d+1 season at a pt/gp not great. Kinda reminds me of the Rasmusen pick everyone drooling over his size playing against kids. Good NHLer but far from what you want at 9/15oa.

He needs to take his game to a different level in the finals if he can get up around the .940 he put up last season thats when you can start talking about being 'dominant' imo.

The issues with Cossa's game are very coachable. He has the size, ability, work ethic, and attitude to have all the success in the world at the NHL level. Not at all concerned. We knew these things going into that draft.

Assuming he puts it all together, he will be better than Wallstedt. Is there a risk? Absolutely. But if it pays off we have our own Vasey. Higher ceiling, lower floor, longer development path. That's why Yzerman traded for Ned.

Thats assuming Cossa puts it all together and Wallstedt doesnt. The Swedish Wall also has the size ability work ethic and attitude to be a top tier NHL g. Im not sure where you get the higher ceiling imo the better goalie playing in the better league has the higher ceiling. Wallstedt has the higher floor and ceiling is the better goalie now and outside of something unforseen will be the better goalie in 5/10/15yrs from now.

I'm getting the higher ceiling from the fact that Yzerman drafted him. Clearly, he and his scouting staff think he has a higher ceiling as well.

Also, the ceiling has is not how good a prospect is now. Ceilings are based on overall potential.

The reality is none of us know who will be better when all is said and done.

SY has had more hits then misses so far and I hope that continues but I think Cossa over Wallstedt will be his biggest miss. And ya all we can do at this point is speculate.

Traded Alec Regula for nothing.

Wasted a 2nd rounder on Anti Tuoumisto

Wasted a 2nd rounder on Robert Mastrosimone

at least he´s picking good players with his first round picks, unlike Ken Holland...

Red Wings have had some bad misses outside the 1st round under SY but so has every other gm. If Johansson-2nd and Soderblom-6th hit he deserves a pass on those other 2nd round misses imo. Thats 3 potential top half lineup players in 2019. Its to early to judge 2020/21 drafts but outside Raymond and Edvinsson there dont seem to be any real standouts imho.

Taking Cossa with Wallstedt sitting there wont get a pass from me tho when the entire hockey world knew then and now that the Swede was/is the better g. Take swings in the later rounds which is what hes been doing but you have to hit with top15 picks.

After Pick 20, the chances of the player making the NHL and lasting are terrible.  So Steve has done just fine.  Getting Berggren and Soderblom into top 9 positions from their draft positions is outstanding.  And he's hit home runs on all (5) of his first rounders.  Seider, Raymond, Edvinsson, and Veleno are all going to be long time NHL players.  Cossa is up in the air still, but he's also trending in the right direction.  If there's one thing Steve has done well in his first 3 seasons, it's drafting.  His UFA signings haven't been that strong up to this point, but that is more than likely by design.  I wouldn't be surprised if we spend some money soon on some bigger targets.

Zadina/Veleno was KH last draft not SY.

Im not sure how you can say Cossa is trending in the right direction. Hes actually trending in the wrong direction with his worst statistical season in the whl. Hes supposed to turn pro next season but I dont know if thats whats best for him. It could be the beginning of a downward spiral if he goes to GR and struggles wouldnt be surprised if he has a sub.900sv% and 3.5+gaa in the ahl next season.

veleno was holland.  oh yah.

Cossa has backstopped his team to the finals so far.  Swedish goalies dont win.  In fact, a Swedish goalie has never held the Stanley cup.  That's the problem.  Thats why Yzerman didnt take Wallstedt.  He wont win.  Cossa is proving to be a winner.

2019 is a big win if Johansson and Soderblom pan out. Seider alone makes that draft a win. I just hate wasting two 2nd rounders.

2020 looks very decent as well with Raymond, Wallinder, Viro and Hanas. Maybe Sebrango and Niederbach too.

2021 outside of Cossa and Eddog, Mazur and Buium look very good. Zito also has late steal potential.

You shoulda been here during that season. There was an ongoing flame war about whether we should even select any goalie in the first round that lasted all season.

But all of us pro goalie bros were on team JesperWillBeAWing. Only @marcaractac wanted Cossa and SY listened for some reason.

A swedish goalie has never held the Stanley Cup.  So glad Stevie knows that selecting WINNERS is important.

Isnt it something like sub20% of 2nds play more then 100 games in the NHL? You want to hit on every pick but its just not gonna happen.

If ya get 2 top half lineup guys in 1 draft its a successful draft. Seider is already and at least 1 of Johansson/Soderblom should be.

Wallinder/Mazur should make it in some capacity. Viros a bust. The other players have a shot.
