Right hand D to keep an eye on at the draft:

  • Axel Sandin-Pellikka - 5'11"/176 - Avg rank: #13 - SWE - Mobile, dynamic, offensive Dman
  • David Reinbacher - 6'2'/187 - Avg rank: #22 - AUS - Mature, no weaknesses, but no flash, two-way Dman
  • Lukas Dragicevic - 6'2"/190 - Avg rank: #29 - CAN - Smart, physical, offensive Dman, with poor skating
  • Oliver Bonk - 6'1"/176 - Avg rank: #37 - CAN - Well rounded two-way Dman
  • Tom Willander - 6'1"/179 - Avg rank: #44 - SWE - Mobile defensive Dman

Honorable mention: Beau Akey, not ranked as high as the others, but he's a super smart and talented offensive Dman who could be a great dark horse pick in the 2nd round.

Sandin-Pellikka is the obvious first choice for a lot of reasons. But I can't see SY passing on the many talented centers available to pick him instead. And he more than likely won't be there at our next pick. Then we should pray that Reinbacher is still available with our 2nd first. He plays the exact same game that Seider did when we drafted him. Mature, vet-like, mistake-free, game. Will he explode into a an offensive shop wrecker like Seider? Probably not, but then again there's always a chance... Dragicevic is an interesting choice if both those former guys are gone. He's big, physical, talented, and smart. If you can improve his skating he looks he could be a 40 pt NHL Dman. If you can't he might not be able to keep up in the NHL... If the first two are gone and SY doesn't want to risk it on Dragicevic, there's Bonk and Willander (but maybe you take someone else and hope they slip to our 2nd round pick). Bonk is a solid two-way guy. Good defense. Good first pass. Not amazing at anything. Willander more fits the SY mold. Great skater and shuts it down defensively.

An interesting forward in this draft for us: Noah Dower-Nilsson (brother of wings 5th rounder Liam Dower-Nilsson)

Center - 6'0"/183 - Avg rank #39 - SWE

Better than his older brother. Uber talented with skill, sense, vision, and creativity. Lacks intensity and sometimes has questionable decision making. Could be another Berggren for us, or could be another Jurco.

We need somebody that can PUNCH FACES.

The Hockey Writers, who are often out to lunch, suggested Lawson Crouse as a trade target...  a big power forward that can score... sign me up!

In my current Franchise mode in NHL23, which I'm in season 2038-39, I drafted Willander way back in the first draft. 29th overall. Unfortunately he never made the NHL in my franchise. He played 11 seasons in GR until he was released and went to Calgary for 2 seasons, now he's in Ottawa to start this season. Maybe in the real world he'll have a better NHL career!

So.... Husso out for the rest of the season maybe?   Speaking of which,  I did the tankathon thingy today and I must say, we land 1st or 2nd a bunch more often than when we were 10th and 11th.   Just sayin'.

When it comes to Griffins...

Re-sign:

  • LD, Jared McIsaac ------ just turned 23 and is getting better after injuries derailed him
  • RW, Matt Luff ------------ solid vet presence who's played well
  • C, Danny O'Regan ----- solid vet and need the C depth
  • G, John Lethemon ------ need the G depth

Sign:

  • C, Joel L'Esperance --------- on AHL deal with GR, award him 2-way deal, local kid, been good, need C depth
  • RD, Oscar Plandowski ------ our 2021 5th rd pick, long shot prospect but we desperately need RHD in GR
  • C, Amadeus Lombardi ------ our 2022 4th rd pick, nothing left for him to learn in the OHL, time to sign
  • LW, Robert Mastrosimone -- our 2019 2nd rd pick, good senior year in NCAA this year, college over, time to sign
  • C, Pasquale Zito -------------- our 2021 6th rd pick, been a solid contributor in the OHL for 3 years, should take next step
  • LD, Willian Wallinder --------- our 2020 2nd rd pick, need to get him on NA ice ASAP

Release:

  • RW, Alex Chiasson --------- too old and will likely go somewhere else to try to get back into the NHL
  • C, Chase Pearson ---------- been leapfrogged at this point, never going to happen for him
  • LW, Pontus Andreasson --- too small and not skilled enough, probably goes back to SHL
  • C, Jasper Weatherby ------- unskilled defensive center, don't need
  • RD, Seth Barton ------------- young but talent-less, roster spot would better used on someone else
  • RD, Wyatt Newpower ------- young but talent-less, roster spot would better used on someone else
  • G, Victor Brattstrom --------- Not good, will probably go back to the SHL

Hirose - Kasper - Czarnik
Hanas - O'Regan - Luff
Lombardi - L'Esperance - Soderblom
Mastrosimone - Zito - Doucet

Edvinsson - McIsaac
Johansen - Sebrango
Wallinder - Viro
Plandowski

Cossa
Lethemon

Zito, Plandowski, and Mastrosimone getting signed might not happen, but I'd like to release a lot of bad prospects from GR, so it would be a good time to bring new guys like this in. I'm 100% that we will ink Lombardi and Wallinder this year though. Another interesting option would be signing Mazur and Buium, but I like their situation in the NCAA and I'm happy to leave them there for now. Would rather see what we have in Zito and Plandowski and get those two out of the poopy CHL.

SY more than probably also signs some vet RHD for GR and an AHL goalie (maybe Ned). We have way too many LHD in the system.

I prefer to plan like Eddogg and Kasper aren't going to make the team. Then, if they do make the team, cross that bridge when we get there.

So far:

We've signed Tuomisto for RHD instead of Plandowski. I'm a lil surprised by this, but it's not a problem. Plandowski is nothing special as of right now. Tuomisto is 6'5" on the other hand so why not I guess. I just think he plays for the griffs for x2 seasons and then goes back to Finland.

Wallinder has signed as expected. Robert Mastrosimone apparently won't sign, but who really cares. He most likely never goes beyond the AHL. Maybe it's time to sign Mazur instead?

Stop using homosexuality as a pejorative.

Defense depth for next year right now:

LHD - RHD
Walman - Seider
Chiarot - Tuomisto
Maata - Lindstrom (RFA)
Edvinsson - Barton (RFA)
Johansson - Newpower (RFA)
Sebrango
Viro
Wallinder
McIsaac (RFA)

We literally have x2 RHD under contract in the whole org.

My guess is we def see Yzerman go C and RW with those two first-rounders. We'll get RHD plus in UFA who can fill in.

What would a trade with Arizona look like for Keller and Crouse?

Would the 2023 Islanders 1st, 2024 Bruins 1st, our own 2024 1st (top 10 protected) sliding to an unprotected 2025 1st, Wallinder or Johansson, plus Fabbri and Zadina for their roster do it?

Bedard and Reinbacher is the dream, even if it means trading up with the Islanders pick.

In the 2nd round my dream is:

1. Dower-Nilsson

2. Willander

3. Akey

Two centers and 3 RHD with our first 5 picks.

I think we need a surefire 1C prospect out of this draft. Assuming we don't win the lottery that means we're limited to Smith, Yager, Moore, Dvorsky as guys with reasonable 1C upside. Guys like Ritchie and Heidt are longshots as well. Of all these guys only Smith is a surefire 1C. I say go get him. Package as many of our 2nd, 3rd, and 4th rounders as necessary to make it happen. If we walked away with Smith, Sandin-Pellikka/Reinbach, and only one 2nd round pick I'd still be thrilled with the haul.

Id put Danielson in that conversation to. I agree tho if we can get Smith SY needs to make it happen. Outside of the big 3 hed be the best bet as a future 1c. I still wouldnt rule Kasper out of that either but agree that we need 1 more top tier c in the org as 1 can always switch to w.
