Chychrun is not projected to be 1st pairing material which caused him to drop from 2ND overall to 16. It would have been a good trade to drop down 4 spots & pick up an extra second without dumping Datsyuks contract.

He was a top five prospect in many rankings for much of last year. He's exactly what the Red Wings don't have in the pipeline right now. Much more upside with Chychrun than a project like Cholowski. Trading Pavel's contract does nothing for the Red Wings if you don't use the cap space or even worse, spend it poorly now. It was only for one year and the team isn't going anywhere regardless.

I'm honestly dreading Friday with Stamkos not an option now. This is worst case scenario for the Red Wings. Holland with cap space and no appealing options that are going to drastically alter the direction of the franchise in the near future. I wasn't even fully onboard with pursuing Stamkos, but once Pav's contract got moved, it was Stamkos or bust for me.

Now we just potentially gave up a future first pairing d-man in the draft when they could have sat on Pav's money for a year, let the young guys play and continue stockpiling prospects. Instead we are staring at David Backes for five years or some other terrible contract when that is the last thing the Wings need at this point.

For once Holland, please do nothing. Kick every single tire, but I truly hope nothing happens. Give me Larkin, AA, Mantha, Tatar and Nyquist in larger roles next season.

Abdelkader didn't start playing with Datsyuk and Zetterberg until second half the shortened 2013 season which is after Holmstrom retired in 2012 with Lidstrom. Not 5 years. I could flip it and say that the two years Nyquist produced 28 and 27 goals was on a line with Zetterberg (still weaning off his prime at age 33/34), but failed to produce when put in a situation where he wasn't surrounded by an elite player.

For 1:30 less icetime I don't see how one scores 2/3ds the amount of goals he did the season before (with lesser competition btw). Usage was definitely an issue but Nyquist's regression had more to do with individual decline in my opinion. The reason being that when he was put on Zetterberg's line he still couldn't get much done. I'm not sure if it's a confidence thing or if the league's figured him out. Anyways I'm not jumping the gun and saying we trade him (unless it's for the right deal and if we get Okposo). But he's got to turn it around this coming season since he is making $4.75 mill. I'd assume he'll be getting more responsibility this coming season and the coaching changes should make a difference. So we can reassess at the end of the 2016 season.

Far as Abby is concerned I'm not sure how it will be when he's 36. Likely not good because I myself have stated the long term on the contract isn't smart. But here and now in the present the $4.25 million cap hit seems like it's worked out comparitively to someone else with a similar cap hit (Nyquist).

Fair enough - I had my issue with the length of term as well. But not the caphit. He's earned that for now.

I disagree with the bolded part -- the drop off in Nyquist's goals was due to the fact the power play was a dumpster fire. He was still producing near the same level at even strength, despite poor usage and compounded by having much less talented players than him get the top-six minutes instead. If Gus doesn't produce getting Helm's or Richards' deployment all season, then I am more inclined to believe the notion that he regressed. It's befuddling though Blashill would decrease the ice time of his top two goal-scorers and then bemoan the fact your team can't score goals.

I just think expectations are the biggest foes of Gus and Tatar right now. They probably aren't the next generation of superstars like when Z and Pavel took over. However, 30-goal scorers in their primes aren't easy to find and with better usage going forward, I believe both will get back to that level. I really hope the Wings aren't thinking of dealing either of them at this point, though I fear that might be the case.

Sproul needs to at least get a shot out of training camp. I don't care so much if they lose Jensen, but it would be a tough pill to swallow if Sproul never gets a real opportunity on a team that has gotten nothing offensively from their d-men for years.

Steve Yzerman gets his team to yet another Conference Finals.  Just keep making Kenny look stupid.

Without his best forward and second best d-man no less. Jim Nill has done pretty well for himself too.

Kenny hasn't upgraded the blue line in five years though, so we have that going for us. And a pointless playoff streak.

#2674823 Mantha

Posted by GoWings1905 on 01 May 2016 - 08:15 PM

That was also a reason.

But Mantha didn't outperform (2 G 1 A) anyone else who would have necessarily had his opurtunity (1st line with Pav + PP time) in his 10 games. Blashill said that he also didn't believe the PP success in those 10 games was Manthas doing.

Again, it's Anthony Mantha - not Alex Ovechkin were talking about.

Blash also said Joakim Andersson was up for insurance and PK and then he played every game and never on the PK.

#2674541 Mantha

Posted by GoWings1905 on 29 April 2016 - 08:40 PM

I'm not really concerned with Mantha's defensive lapses. I'd rather they have him focused on scoring goals and making things happen in the offensive zone. There are enough 2 way forwards on this team

Great post. The Red Wings are so obsessed with every single guy dedicating themselves to playing 200 feet of hockey and they wonder why they struggle to score goals. You don't have to be defensively responsible if the puck is at the other end of the ice.

Plus it would make the Red Wings more exciting to watch. This low-event, no creativity hockey isn't exactly putting fans at the edge of their seats.

#2673916 Alexander Radulov: Wings on short-list of desired teams

Posted by GoWings1905 on 26 April 2016 - 06:44 PM

Eh, why not? The locker room is reportedly a mess anyways.

For real though, I would pass. Just give AA and Mantha the top-six time instead.

I don't really care. Neither should be on the team anyway. Jurco had his chances and Pulk is just too one dinensional.

When was Jurco's chance? He played with Luke Glendening and Drew Miller on the 4th line.

He may ultimately be a bust, but I'm not going to judge a skilled forward based on that usage.

I've always liked Smith and kronwall together. They'd make a solid second pair I think. Just gotta acquire someone to play with duke on the first and suddenly the top 4 looks really good. The key os to get Ericsson off the team.
I wonder if AA will be sent down? A deep playoff run with the Griffins would be great for him.
Scratch that AA being sent down was just confirmed on Twitter.

I agree with you -- I wanted Smith paired with Kronwall after they played together in the Boston series in 2014.

Not sure I would want Smith anywhere near Kronwall now, though. I think Smith needs a partner that can let him do his thing offensively and Kronwall is too slow to cover up for him anymore. I know there is a lot up in the air yet with the defense, but I would like to see a DeKeyser-Smith pairing going forward.

The scary part is that even losing Quincey, the Wings still have a logjam of d-men next season and they have never even given XO, Sproul, Russo or Jensen a serious look yet. We don't even know what we have in any of them because players like Ericsson and Quincey have been blocking them from the NHL. I think Ericsson will be impossible to move, even if Holland got out of his comfort zone and tried. A 32-year-old, overpaid, turnover prone d-man signed for four more years isn't going to fetch much interest. I think the Red Wings are more likely to see Smith as the trade piece, which I think would be a huge mistake.

Smith, again? Dude was our best d-man in the series (especially Game 3) and is about the only one that has any clue how to execute a clean breakout. He drives possession and pushes the play offensively.

I don't even remember any egregious Smith turnovers in this series, which was always his biggest downfall. Kronwall and Ericsson are by far the biggest issues on the back end -- amplified by the fact Blashill inexplicably kept them together as a pairing even though they have stunk together for years.

#2672782 I Hate Jeff Blashill because ...

Posted by GoWings1905 on 21 April 2016 - 09:50 PM

Don't hate Blash, but I am about done with Holland.

I think Blash is somewhat handcuffed by Holland's atrocious contracts and mentality of the organization to always let veteran players run the show.

I'm hoping next season will be very different. It's going to be ugly regardless due to Holland's cap management, but maybe it will finally be a full transition to letting the young guys loose.

Probably not the scent of an AA shift.

Joakim Andersson: 1:57 of ice time with four PK's already.

Absolutely dumbfounding decision to play him over Mantha.

My 8 year old daughter skates and works harder in her hockey games in comparison to Z!

Blame the coaches who still force him into roles that he physically cannot handle anymore. They treat Z like a first line center. His decline is only more noticeable like Kronwall's because they both play way too much.
