I hope he changes to 22 or 24. 71 might mean something though...who knows...
I think Larkin's plan is to ultimately wear #17 and the #71 is just temporary since Richards grabbed it, but he's probably only going to be here maybe one year.
Anyways, so pumped for tonight. Most excited I have been for a Wings season since probably 2009. New coach, the youth movement, potential to be good this season and the foreseeable future make it a fun time to be a fan.
I'm also in the Red Wings are a "Kronwall-partner d-man" away from serious contention. I know Holland's forte isn't trading, but there has never been a better opportunity to be bold than now. You have Z and Pav on the downside of their careers (yet both still contribute in big ways), an insanely deep prospect pool, one of the best goalie tandems in the league. The only missing piece is a top four d-man.
The Wings are in a position to contend now without selling off their key components going forward like Larkin. Realistically, there just aren't enough spots to go around as it is. If you can win another cup with the Euro Twins around without mortgaging your future, you have to take advantage of that window. Because truthfully "rebuilding on the fly" has gone quite a bit better than I think anyone in the organization even imagined. They don't have it to tear it down completely or wait on this wave of prospects to fully hit because the group this season is pretty damn good as it is.
yeah that was just strange I don't think he is a top pairing guy but someone you can trust on the second pairing.
Green has yet to show that he is more than a very good QB on the PP.
Neither was Brian Rafalski and look what a huge difference he made for the Red Wings. Having d-men that can move the puck and start the transition game in hockey is critical in today's game. I think it's a huge reason the Wings have struggled at even strength lately -- the forwards are capable, but the defense struggles to get them going.
Green can (and probably will) be a disaster defensively and I won't care. The Wings have enough d-men that are defensive minded and aren't particularly adept at moving the puck and adding offense from the back end. Plus, Green will have the most responsible d-man on the team as his partner.
It's like Tatar and scoring goals. He's kinda careless with the puck and not great defensively, but he brings a skill to the ice that the Wings don't have in abundance otherwise. Green can do his thing and it will be a huge boost -- something severely lacking since Nick and Rafalski left.
I knew he wore 19 with UofM, and 21 with USA, but he wore 25 with the Griffins, and in Red Wings training camp. I just assumed he was taking number 25... 71 is completely random and there must be some mistake there...
Larkin wanted 17, but Richards snagged it so he flipped to 71. He should most likely be able to get 17 back next season.
Jimmy is still better than Mrazek. Lol yeah sure he is.
I think Mrazek has a higher ceiling no doubt, but right now I would take Howard too. People seem to forget how consistent Howard has been since becoming the starter. He's not a superstar, but he is still a very good goalie.
