Of course. Bertuzzi makes a terrible turnover and then gets a tap in from Franzen.

Will gladly take the goal, though.

People seem to forget, besides the back injury, the guy will be 34 next season. Don't expect any stellar numbers, even if his back is better.

That's a fair point. Although, I honestly believe this season was one of the best in Z's career and that's saying something.

I do agree that it's a shame the Red Wings are stuck in transitional years as the Euro Twins continue to get older. By the time all of these prospects are fully integrated, Pav and Z will be gone or likely declining.

Stand pat. First time in awhile, I will actually defend Holland for "kicking the tires". The Red Wings weren't a player away from championship contention with Henrik Zetterberg and now they are down their MVP. I do wish the streak will remain intact, but I don't want to give up assets for a rental player or marginal impact player that won't change the Red Wings fortunes of borderline playoff team. Nyquist and Tatar are basically untouchable to me if they are going to be dangled for some "quick fix" just because Z is out.

Hope Weiss and Franzen get/stay healthy, let Sheahan and Jurco continue to play and build a solid foundation for next season and beyond. Trade Quincey for whatever the hell you can get in return and use the cap space created from the dead weight being gone to fix the defense this summer.

Look at the posts during the Latvian game. There was trash talk. Now you have lost so you get to be trash talked. That's how sports work. What do you expect us to just say good game and never speak of it again?

Considering most Americans did just that following the game, that seems pretty fair.

Ya ok, the US fans were bragging for the last few weeks relentlessly about how they were winning the gold this year, and Canada has no chance and blah blah blah, I'm just doing my due diligence now.

Care to support that with any evidence? I think, as a whole, Americans were just confident and pleased with how our team was playing. Any sensible person knew winning gold was by no means a given.

This thread was very civil until you stirred the pot. Every American in here has given Canada credit for winning today.

Should be a fantastic game. Four years ago, I expected Canada to win and was just ecstatic at the surprise run the United States had put together.

Now, it's completely different. I expect and think the United States will win. That being said, I don't put a ton of stock in Canada "struggling" so far. They are the most talented team in the Olympics and USA will have to put forth their best effort yet.

For once, I wouldn't care if Holland stands pat. If Z is out any extended period of time (which seems like a foregone conclusion), I don't see the Red Wings making the playoffs. Not only Z missing, but Franzen hasn't skated either. There isn't anybody available at the deadline that screams impact player and do we really want to give up assets for a rental on a borderline playoff team?

Play Sheahan and Jurco the rest of the season. Continue with Nyquist and Tatar developing for the future. I don't want too many more "transitional years" since the Euro Twins are approaching the end, but I'm not sure this team was a contender even with a full contingent of healthy bodies.

Build for next season. The dead weight will be gone and there is ample cap space to address glaring needs like the defense.

Haha, awesome. USA doesn't get a free pass to the gold on this one.

Like drawing Norway, Austria and an absolutely depleted Finland in group play?

And after the Boston GM is done laughing at you, he'll tell you he'll give you a 4th round pick for Quincey.

Agreed, which I would gladly take.

Well, you'd be wrong.    But in any case, Henrik Zetterberg has what he has and is the star he is because he is a Detroit Red Wing in the National Hockey League in North America. He has earned no right to do anything. His contract is with the Detroit Red Wings, not the Swedish National Team or the SEL.   It doesn't matter if the Wings are contenders or not.  That doesn't absolve him of his obligation to fulfill his contract and put the Red Wings first.  He's already won a gold medal for his country, so there was no need to risk injury to do so again.  It was selfish on his part and on Datsyuk's part.

Z has been "risking" injury for months playing for the Red Wings. Actually more than risking, playing through an injury that happened to get worse while at the Olympics. Could have just as easily occurred in an NHL game.

Lol Quincey has been our third best defensemen for a while now. The blind hate is ridiculous. There's a reason he's the only dman on this team that other GMs are interested in.

Is there any evidence to that claim at all? Kronner, E and DeKeyser aren't available because they are infinitely more valuable than Quincey, so that's part of the reasoning. Quincey is an overpaid disaster that might catch some GM's attention only because he is a rental and the asking price wouldn't be relatively high.

Quincey was a nightmare against Washington and that was three games ago. It's like he has become so terrible that just being rather unnoticeable is acceptable now. That's OK if you are Brian Lashoff, but not when you make nearly four million dollars and play the minutes Quincey does.

Yes! Nice to finally beat this team.

Jimmy was great in the third.

All you're really saying is that Smith plays best when someone better covers up his mistakes, which is true of every bad defenseman.  Smith isn't even adequate defensively on the second pair.  Put him on the first and you destroy that pairing (since Kronwall isn't a shutdown guy either).  Good first lines would MURDER that top pair.  Also, Smith has been paired with Dekeyser and Lashoff (both responsible) plenty this year and that hasn't noticeably improved his performance...so you can't blame it all on Quincey and Kindl.  You can't move a guy up to the first pair simply because he's a disaster with every other guy on your team.

The only solution I see is to get a second pair defenseman at the deadline, drop Smith permanently to the third pair with Lashoff, and trade/waive Kindl or Quinecy.  Either that or accept that your defense falls off significantly after the first pair.

Kronwall and Smith didn't get murdered playing together at all. They did it the entire time E was gone and were fine at both ends. That's why I suggested the pairing -- Quincey and Kindl don't make Smith better, but Kronwall did.

Also, I hardly recall Smith playing with DeKeyser at all. Maybe Lashoff some, but Smith's partner was almost exclusively Quincey before E was hurt.

I do agree that getting another d-man is imperative regardless. Someone that can move the puck and chip in offensively is a big need for the Red Wings.

That is such a terrible penalty to take at this stage of the game. Just sloppy focus and those are the ones that usually end up in the net.

The kid line is special. They create scoring chances and sustain pressure practically every shift. I think Jurco is going down if Pav comes back this week, but he has been really good tonight.
