Well, you'd be wrong. But in any case, Henrik Zetterberg has what he has and is the star he is because he is a Detroit Red Wing in the National Hockey League in North America. He has earned no right to do anything. His contract is with the Detroit Red Wings, not the Swedish National Team or the SEL. It doesn't matter if the Wings are contenders or not. That doesn't absolve him of his obligation to fulfill his contract and put the Red Wings first. He's already won a gold medal for his country, so there was no need to risk injury to do so again. It was selfish on his part and on Datsyuk's part.
Z has been "risking" injury for months playing for the Red Wings. Actually more than risking, playing through an injury that happened to get worse while at the Olympics. Could have just as easily occurred in an NHL game.
Lol Quincey has been our third best defensemen for a while now. The blind hate is ridiculous. There's a reason he's the only dman on this team that other GMs are interested in.
Is there any evidence to that claim at all? Kronner, E and DeKeyser aren't available because they are infinitely more valuable than Quincey, so that's part of the reasoning. Quincey is an overpaid disaster that might catch some GM's attention only because he is a rental and the asking price wouldn't be relatively high.
Quincey was a nightmare against Washington and that was three games ago. It's like he has become so terrible that just being rather unnoticeable is acceptable now. That's OK if you are Brian Lashoff, but not when you make nearly four million dollars and play the minutes Quincey does.
All you're really saying is that Smith plays best when someone better covers up his mistakes, which is true of every bad defenseman. Smith isn't even adequate defensively on the second pair. Put him on the first and you destroy that pairing (since Kronwall isn't a shutdown guy either). Good first lines would MURDER that top pair. Also, Smith has been paired with Dekeyser and Lashoff (both responsible) plenty this year and that hasn't noticeably improved his performance...so you can't blame it all on Quincey and Kindl. You can't move a guy up to the first pair simply because he's a disaster with every other guy on your team.
The only solution I see is to get a second pair defenseman at the deadline, drop Smith permanently to the third pair with Lashoff, and trade/waive Kindl or Quinecy. Either that or accept that your defense falls off significantly after the first pair.
Kronwall and Smith didn't get murdered playing together at all. They did it the entire time E was gone and were fine at both ends. That's why I suggested the pairing -- Quincey and Kindl don't make Smith better, but Kronwall did.
Also, I hardly recall Smith playing with DeKeyser at all. Maybe Lashoff some, but Smith's partner was almost exclusively Quincey before E was hurt.
I do agree that getting another d-man is imperative regardless. Someone that can move the puck and chip in offensively is a big need for the Red Wings.
He won't make any trades. He believes getting Datsyuk, Franzen and Weiss back is enough. Well last time I checked none of those guys are defenseman and we need one badly. Holland's part of the problem.
Exactly. Missing on Suter was the start of it all. Imagine if DeKeyser had not grown up around Detroit and chosen the Red Wings. They just don't have the talent right now to grow from within on defense. Plus it doesn't help when you give up a first rounder and then re-sign Kyle Quincey as your move to bolster the defense.
Holland is gonna have to get creative this summer and actually make a trade for a quality d-man.
