Carle isn't the kind of guy that can be the franchise d-man... Suter was.  I don't see the Wings going after him as hard as they did with Suter. I think it's more likely they look at the trade market if they're still looking for a #1 D-man

A chance of winning in the postseason

One thing I've noticed about Blashill at WMU and Indiana....His players show great development as the season progresses. We saw that at Western when guys like Balisy and Leone came out of nowhere to have strong second halves of the season. With people like Smith, Tatar, Mursak, and Emmerton having shots at being everyday players within the next year or two, he's going to help make sure they develop their full potential.

So as you guys know, Doughty still has yet to sign a contract with LA.

Do you think we should send an offer sheet?

Should we try and trade for his rights?

Even though we signed Commodore and White I believe we should do whatever it takes to get this kid.

I just have a feeling he will end up one of the all time greats in his position.

I would have no problem sending him a 10 year 70 mill offer sheet and losing those 1st round picks.

Or a trade involving any combination of Filppula, Hudler, Ericsson, Emmerton, Mursak, 1st round picks (not all together but some combo of these guys).

I think White is a slight step-down offensively than Rafalski, but a slight step-up defensively as well. I think he can get the job done.

Another thing I like for next season...competition in the Bottom 3. You have 4 maybe 5 guys competing for 3 spots once training camp starts. I think this extra level of motivation is going to bring out the best in everyone.

Oh Yandle's undoubtedly going to be hard to get but at least the Wings have one advantage in that case: Yandle hasn't signed with the Yotes and he appears to want out.  That means they'll have to move him to someone.  I think he'll cost the Wings some very real assets (and more so than Bogo likely would) but at least the Yotes don't have all the leverage in the deal since everyone knows he wants out.

Your point reminds me of the Phil Kessel Boston thing from a few years ago. The situation dragged on late in the offseason, and all TO had to offer was a series of high draft picks, without prospects.

Burns is the scape goat.... its the idea he got traded and the Front Office let it go with out a fight or a offer....then trade the 1st pick away for 2 second rounders because they are confident the players they are looking at will be there when they want them.(does that mean we never look at players above the rank of 30?)    honestly its frustrating.... to see all these teams around us getting better and wondering why Holland is prepared to wait.   Why is my question.  does he think that there is another Datsyuk  or Zett sitting in the later rounds that only HE knows about..... sometimes playing it cool and patient doesnt make you a better team...or a better GM.   It makes you play golf in May.

He wants his players to be aggressive and play to their ability, Why can't we expect the same from our GM?  He has players of value...and cap space. and still has done very little when you look at what has been done around the league.

Well first off, Ken Holland has never missed the playoffs during his tenure as the Wings GM...So whatever strategy he's using, I'd say it's a pretty good one.

"He let it go without a fight or offer." How do you know this? Are you suggesting Cliff Fletcher walked over to our table and said "I'll give you Burns for free" and Holland turned them down? Essentially, Minnesota got 3 first round picks, all offensive guys, from this deal. The Wings didn't have that kind of depth of young offensive players, so Minnesota turned to someone who did. There are probably a bazillion gajillion trade discussions that happen during the course of the year, and realistically only a slim percentage of those actually result in trades. Ken Holland is a smart guy. He knows what other teams are doing. He knows what our strengths and weaknesses are. One way or another, he's going to address those needs. But he's also going to do it in a way that helps us in the long run, just not this season.
