#2318943 Holland Content with Current Roster

Posted by Shaman on 13 July 2012 - 12:52 PM

Wasn't refering to just his work as GM.

To be clear the success of the Wings, just like the failures of the Wings are not Holland's alone, its the whole management and coaching infrastructure. If I wanted Holland fired (and I may after this season (2012-13)), it wouldn't be just a message to Holland, but to the whole front office. This season will tell the real worth of the Ken Holland Red Wings. (I say this because up until 2008-2009 the Wings were pretty much the team built by Bowman and Jimmy D along with Holland).

Imagine if Flippula continues to go forward and keeps scoring? There's so many intangibles with this team. I believe Datsyuk can get back to 90+ points I think you can say last year a bad year for him. the year before Datsyuk was over a point per game had he not been injured he would have been on the league leaders. Franzen can snap back. It was only two years ago Datsyuk, Zetterberg and Franzen were playing close to their best hockey.

Too. Many. Ifs.

If Datsyuk, Zetterberg, And Franzen go back to old form. If Filpulla continues to progress, Smith, Quinecy, Kindl and Ericsson take the next step. That's what you seem not to grasp, this team COULD be good, but, unless everything goes right, they aren't even as good as they were last year. I expect them to regress to a bubble team, because I am realistic, I will cheer for them if they are a bottom feeder or SC winners, but I won't delude myself.

I like turtles

Seriously, I keep saying this, it seems there is no middle ground here... its either 'the Wings are fine and they will win forever and ever and ever' or 'The Wings better start scouting the top draft candidates now, because they are a lottery team'. This team is clearly a bubble team as it stands right now, its neither good enough to be considered elite nor bad enough to be considered a bottom feeder. As I said in other threads, I am afraid this team will become like Calgary, coming up a little short, not making it in the playoffs, or getting bounced early, and the management never seeing the forest for the trees and addressing the problems because they are always 'that close' to being there.

Everyone needs to calm down, its July 12th, still months from October and the start of hockey season, there is still a lot of time. This team does have needs, but honestly, what can he say? 'The wings need to make huge trade/get a FA at any cost'... If he says that well any cost will be higher than it would have been otherwise, and that says a lot because its already a sellers market. Calm down, enjoy the warm, dry weather in Michigan, and realize that until the season starts Kenny does have time.

The final answer to this thread is this:

This team is a playoff team if everything goes right. If all the players that need to take a step forward take it, if all the players that underachieved return to form, if all players that overachieved continue to overachieve, and there are no injuries. If all these things happen this team will be #4 or #5 in the West. If any of these things don't happen the team has a very real chance of regressing to a bubble team. If the worst case happens and more than one of these things don't happen this team may not make the playoffs. This is why a lot of us want Semin or Doan and another D-man, because it gives the Wings wiggle room, so that if something doesn't go perfectly they will not be hurt as much by it. With all the trends of the last 3 seasons, I would say that if the Wings do stand pat, it will be a very long season indeed.

There will be no trades for a forward this offseason, Holland isn't that stupid. Especially these high profile players where you're pretty much guaranteed to get screwed over. With the FA pool being so bad this year we acquired enough forwards that we can use them to trade for something we don't have enough of, defensemen. Are you people really that short sighted that when you hear a high profile player is on the trading block you don't even take into consideration the shape our team is in right now. We've upgraded our forwards already, now we have to trade for defence. Signing Doan or Semin is all you can ask for in forward department.

The Wings have not upgrade on Forward, they have move laterally on forward at best. Sammy is a year older and playing with worse line mates, so no way hes a 50 point player, especially if he lands on the third line. Brunner is an unproven commodity, and shouldn't be counted on to be anything until he shows he can make the transition to the NA game. Tootoo is a spare part that was benched by the Preds at the end of last season and during the playoffs on a Preds team that is not deep at Forward. Add to this Bertuzzi and Cleary are both a year older and not showing signs of not declining I don't see how you can say they are better in the forward department. Add the less dangerous offense to a defense that has taken at least a step and a half backwards, well... the bright side is a down year could reduce Howard's value on his next contract anyway.

#2317428 PK Subban for Flippula and Tatar?

this is a cruel joke. where is 'report abuse' button?

If you read the OP you'd know I was trying to post this in the rumor section. Again I apologize.

The Montreal #Canadiens have agreed to a sign and trade involving PK Subban. Subban will be dealt to the #RedWings for Filppula and Tatar.

Rumor Per Insiders (possibly Dreger), What do you think?

This was meant to be in the rumor section, I apologize for misposting it in the main section.

Sammy and Brunner are improvements over Hudler. Sammy puts up comparable numbers, but also plays a way better 2-way game. Meanwhile Brunner is a right handed sniper with way better wheels and seemingly more creativity.

Both are also improvements over the 1-dimensional Homer. Sammy can play the point on the PP and Brunner brings more than just standing in front of the net taking penalties to negate half our PP's, he is fast and can clearly move the puck better, but can also hang on to it and make things happen.

Nyquist won't replace Miller cause Miller should be full time on the 4th line. He earned his spot on the team. Nyquist will rotate between 1-3 and should be just fine defensively cause he's good at stealing the puck and has really good wheels to backcheck, unlike Hudler...have fun getting 38 points this year for the Flames, whom suck hard.

No one replaces Lidstrom...end of story. In saying that, Smith is my candidate for the Calder Trophy. He has all the tools to be a top 2 dman and has a nose for the net and is a tough SOB. I predict he will ultimately surpass Kronner on the Wings depth chart and that's from a huge Kronwall fan.

Didn't improve offensively? We lost Hudler and gained Sammy to offset his scoring, Tootoo, whom on a team that gets F all for scoring, got 35ish points on the 3rd/4th lines and added the Swiss Elite league scoring champ who was also a point per game at the world championships.

How many we're doomed threads are you going to make this offseason? We're a week and a bit into free agency and there's 3 months until the season starts, if it starts...

Sammy has only one season where he did better than Hudler... and guess what he was playing wing with the Sedin twins. He got 50pts playing with two guys who had nearly 180 points between them, if that doesn't make it clear, nothing will.

#2317115 Doan staying in PHX 4 yrs $21.2 mill

Posted by Shaman on 08 July 2012 - 07:17 PM

My point is that the Wings will have to overpay for someone of Doan's caliber. It's just a fact of how things are in the league now. You think Ericsson's contract won't drive up the price of our D-men when they become FAs? In my opinion, it would help this team to have Doan for a few years, overpayment or not.

He's 35 almost 36, and if he is given a multi year contract, there is the 35+ rule, so given the good chance that he decides to retire in the next few years the Wings are saddled with his cap hit for the rest of the contract. On top of that if he isn't worth 5-5.5 million this year what about for the rest of the life of the contract? So not only is he overpaid this year, he gets more and more overpaid every subsequent year. No thanks, rather not have a 3rd line winger making 5 million and on the downside of his career.

#2317040 Doan staying in PHX 4 yrs $21.2 mill

Well, his agent has contacted 12 teams including the Wings, so I believe he is trying to drive his value up for negotiations with Phx. His offensive production has been dropping over the last 5 years, and he projects to be a 3rd line winger based upon production, age, and skill set. Do the Wings need another 3rd line winger? The answer is no. And to leftwinger, 3 years at 5.5 million is a joke, that would make him paid in the same ball park of Zetterberg, and hes no Zetterberg.
