There should be 1000 pages of comments in this thread but LGW is too busy batteling out the why and how Holland lost Parise to Minny... still!!
This is a nice development and all, but there is so little of substance to add.

I know this will probably be moved, but I hope in the time it stays on the front page it will get to as many people as possible, This is about Detroit Tigers pitcher Max Scherzer and his brothers untimely death. It is one of the most touching stories I have ever read.

They didn't make one offer to any restricted free agents. The flyers threw it out there because they were going for it. They lost Pronger and tried to get Weber but at least they tried. We lost Lidstrom and went after Suter... Really? Weber is the better of those two and we went after #2. I guess just remember the good old days.
You're right, before the Tigers were relevant Holland was just ALWAYS offering HUGE contracts to RFAs from other teams. Pretty much his middle name that was... oh wait...

You know you're having a bad day when you cite Puck Daddy as a good hockey resource.
Wyshynski said it! Therefore it must be true!
Right?
Fixed. Quincey had his chance to show his stuff during that rash of injuries in 2008, and he was absolutely overshadowed by Ericsson and Meech (and every one of the regulars, Lebda included). He was invisible during that stretch in the big leagues. He looked serviceable during his short time in the 2007 playoffs---in which he played 6-8 minutes per game against bottom opposition---but nothing more than that.
Choosing Meech over Quincey was really very simple, and I don't think anyone began complaining about it until months down the line. Everyone was quite optimistic about Meech at that stage.

Ten seconds on google found the Sun says they lost too, if I cared enough I am sure I can find more. But, whatever, you and reality have a pretty causal relationship.

finally the meltdown seems to be subsiding, and all the crazy people are reverting back to normal. People are actual starting to realize that the deals made today in most part were over payments, aside from Gaborik, who is under performing for a very high cap hit, so they can have him. People seem to slip into a blind rage around here every time something they don't like happens
Its all the contradictory BS that Holland has been feeding the world that gets most of us. He says 'We need to get better via free agency, he s**ts the bed in Free agency. Then he says 'We will explore trades over the summer/during the season/at the deadline to address our needs', come trade deadline he sh*ts the bed again. Now he says 'We need to build around our youth and the draft' and yet, he keeps players like Sammuelson, Bertuzzi, Cleary, et al in the line up at the expense of younger NHL level talent in the minors, and also doesn't trade the tradeable assets to build more youth into the system.
This is enough to make ones head spin. I wish he wouldn't treat the fan base like we are stupid and do what he says for once.

Who will play second line center if Z is still injured and Flip is traded? The Wings are still in a playoff position, and trading Flip without a healthy Z would be terrible.
So you'd rather lose Flip in the summer for nothing when he asks for 5m?

A chance at the cup is worth more to me. I'd rather not waste yet another year of datsyuks prime. If we sell we might as well go all out.
The Wings have no realistic chance at the cup this season. The lack of scoring depth, the defense looking lost in some games, and Howard not being an elite goalie all add up to the Wings being bounced early if they even make the playoffs.

The talk of Franzen getting bought-out is so ignorant and asinine it's unbelievable. Fun conjecture for knee-jerk reaction fans i guess.
Franzen should be bought out. Why? To send a message that you can have all the talent in the world, but if you take entire games off, you have no place on the team.

Some people around here really, really love hindsight. To that point, Franzen was a player who put forth maximum effort in every game and looked to have tremendous potential. He was signed on a reasonable contract. Did you perhaps expect Holland to see into the future? If you can find a GM capable of such divination, please let us know. I'd like some lottery numbers.
Ray Shero, he knew Crosby was going to get it in the jaw so he got 2 captains before it even happened.

Ok enough Hossa vs. Franzen talk...
How quickly people forget Hossa was one of the ones blamed for not winning the 2009 Stanley Cup. Hossa only had 15 points in 23 playoff games, and we were very disappointed in his lack of scoring in the finals. Franzen had 23 pts in 23 playoff games, and 18 pts in 16 playoff games in 2008. Personally 99.99999% of us would have been pissed if Holland signed Hossa over Franzen after 2009.
Since the 2008-09 season Hossa has 208 pts in 231 regular season games (90%), Franzen 150 pts in 208 games (72%). Hossa has a cap hit of $5,275,000, Franzen $3,954,545. Franzen get's paid 75% of what Hossa does.
I wouldn't even say hindsight is 20/20, because for dollar value, it's even.
Except Holland knew that Hossa was injured and wasn't at his peak in the playoffs. They let go of the last person to score 40 goals for the Wings for a guy who takes whole weeks off from doing anything relevant.

DeKeyser could very easily come in and play for the Red Wings immediately. They have a lot of bodies on defense, but with Quincey out, that 6th spot is quite attainable right now. White is horrible and was a healthy scratch for a long stretch. Huskins is a nice depth player and Colaiacovo is always a health concern.
Stocks in Detroit area hospitals set record highs in price when his signing was announced.

I do believe that Morrow was one of their highly looked at prospects though. Penguin fans (we know they like to overrate their prospects) had him rated as one of their top, if not, top defensive prospect.
The recent moves haven't been moving fat though, that's the thing. It's been moving picks and it's probably the main thing teams are gunning for this off-season due to the deep draft class.
They are prospects and picks, which is exactly what the Wings need right now. The way the CBA is set up there is huge reward for players on ELC and 2nd contracts for teams. The wings can dump some players, get prospects and picks, and either develop them or flip them for young more NHL ready talent around the time of the draft, and have a team that like in 2008/2009 could make big moves because of a favorable cap situation. Teams that have been winning are teams that are willing to build around youth, with some vets, and are willing to part with players that are going to ask for raises above their production capacities (think like Jordan Staal, 3rd line center, with some second line upside gets 6 million, Pens flip him to Carolina for the 8th overall, and prospects)

If we make a move for Iginla it's not going to be with a top roster player. We would want to win now.
I'd be ok with Jurco, 1st and something little like White, or a lesser prospect like Aubry.
Wings would be getting a top 6 winger that is of the same caliber this season as Marleau, Bobby Ryan, Sharp, Skinner, Simmonds, Seguin, Eberle, Justin Williams, Selanne, Kane and Clarkson. If Iginla is regressing, he's not doing it fast.
Way too much for an aging star that gives no promises of resigning, the team is in a transitional period and giving up youth would be the worst move possible.

Gaustad's pugilistic ability adds value
Yep, it really pushed Nashville over the edge for their first cup... oh wait. The point is, hes not really what one would call a rare player, and he was worth a first.

Okay, what some people also seem to miss is that the current CBA really is built to reward young teams, With the really favorable ELC rules, veteran teams are not the best way to win in the cap world. Add to this that Gaustad got a first round pick in return (a career fourth liner with decent face off ability) should show you that Cleary, White and Flip could all fetch a first rounder or even more.
