Not exactly a small contract, but he's the pick of the litter today.

Babs on Downey and Ellis:
On Downey
"He's going to be on the team. … We'll see what he can bring us."
"He sticks up for his teammates, gives us something we don't have in the organization. But his attitude is why he's here."
On Ellis
"Ellis is a real safe guy. We think he's improved. He's a big guy. We like his attitude. We like that about Downey too. We think they bring a lot of positive to our team as far as good people, work ethic, commitment to the guys."
Note Babs mentiones Downey when speaking about Ellis. More comments about Quincey, Meech, and Grigorenko as well. Please check Bruce's blog for complete details.
Good news for fans of the rought stuff. With Drake, Maltby, Kopecky, and Downey in the lineup, the Wings are definitely more abrasive and difficult to play against.

Wings cut 3, send 3 more to the Griffins.

Sopel and Downey still in it. Nice to see Ericsson still in it as well.

After today's practice in Grand Rapids, the Red Wings released three players ... defensemen Nick Tuzzolino and Brett Westgarth and forward Kris Vernarsky. All three are NHL free agents.
After Tuesday night's preseason opener in Minnesota, Detroit assigned three players back to their junior squads ... defenseman Logan Pyett and forwards Jan Mursak and Cory Emmerton. The rights to all three of those junior players remain the Red Wings'.

Aaron Downey gets under Wings' skin

Aaron's lost his share of fights, but is a willing combatant and great team guy that would bring more grit to the lineup. Do you think he has a chance to crack the lineup to make the team, or was he invited to camp to light a (physical) fire under some of our younger guys?

Free-agent tryout Aaron Downey made his presence felt in Saturday’s scrimmage. The 6-foot, 216-pound forward got under the skin of prospect Evan McGrath and burly forward Johan Franzen.

TSN TV Schedule Announced

TSN is going to carry a lot of hockey, and in HD too! Looking at the TSN site it looks like a clone of ESPN. Are they really the same company (ABC/Disney), and if so, why are American fans getting the shaft on seeing the NHL?
I don't know who I want to yell at first, the NHL or ABC/Disney. And if TSN and ESPN are not the same company, how come TSN hasn't been sued by ABC/Disney for making a carbon copy of ESPN and calling it TSN?
Why are we getting the shaft?
