#2532669 Dekeyser/Tatar status update

Posted by VM1138 on 21 July 2014 - 06:04 AM

You really think they'd waive him? I don't think there's a chance at this point. I know they want one of the kids to play, but I don't think they'll just lose Kindl for nothing. Doesn't seem like Holland's style. They'll likely run Paetsch-Ouellet, Evans-Sproul and Backman-Marchenko in GR, and let Jensen and Nedomlel bounce between the AHL/ECHL.

Exactly what I was thinking when I saw that. But he's OUR overpriced UFA...  :glare:

Kindl is a goner.  He was sat in a crucial final playoff game because he was terrible, for an UNTRIED PROSPECT.  And the prospect played better than Kindl.  They'll waive him and lose him for nothing because no one wants him.  Or he will bolt to the KHL.  If I were a betting man I'd say he's not in their plans for the future.  And we have lost players for nothing.  Quite a few times, so it wouldn't surprise me to lose him for nothing.

The concern shouldn't be: do we re-sign them? The concern should be: will we destroy our relationship with them trying to lowball them. Quite frankly I bet Tatar looks at the Cleary deal and says "I'm worth double that.". And frankly, its silly for Holland to get stingy with the good players and throw wallets at the bad ones. It's one thing to whine to the ref and another to whine publicly, I think. Yzerman never did the latter. I remember him talking to refs a lot but I don't remember him being whining, unless it was a rivalry game and passions were high. Sent from my ADR6350 using Tapatalk 2

#2532215 Tomas Jurco's Ridiculous New Stick Trick

Posted by VM1138 on 16 July 2014 - 06:28 AM

I remember when hockey players listened to rock. God, I'm old.

Sports radio is really bad, too.  They play a LOT of Katy Perry-style pop.  On a show hosted by forty and fifty year old men.  I'm not one to judge but that's a weird demographic to try and appeal to.

#2532066 Favorite Dan Cleary Moment or Play

Posted by VM1138 on 14 July 2014 - 05:22 PM

That will probably win, but I like to forget anything that happened in those playoffs.

Cleary was awful in the 2008 playoffs, but the Wings won the Cup.  In 2009, he was brilliant and scored a lot, but the Wings lost and he missed that crucial breakaway at the end of game 6 against the Pens.

2007 is a better memory, because the team vindicated itself after choking in the playoffs in 2003, 2004 and 2006.  Losing to Anaheim on a deflection sucked, and I still feel we'd have won the Cup if not for that play, but overall, that playoff feels better.  Also likely because we won the Cup the following year.  2009 still stings because the Wings haven't won anything since then.

Man, those post lockout years were (almost) magnificent.  2006, favorites for the Cup. Sure, they choked big time, but they were still overwhelming favorites and won a ridiculous amount of games.  In '07 they shed the choke reputation and were so close to the finals.  '08 was a Cup win, '09 was a Game 7 final that we played with one hand behind our back and still almost won.

2010 had so much promise, and then the injury parade started, and mixed with retirements we haven't been the same since.

#2532061 Wings re-sign Cleary $1.5 mill + $1mill in game bonuses

Neither of Callahan or Ferraro looked ready. Ferraro was considered close to a bust already and got a last ditch shot, I think. Callahan still has a ways to go to be NHL-ready. Sent from my ADR6350 using Tapatalk 2

The Wings didn't want to re-sign Legwand. It's not like he rejected them. We don't usually have a problem keeping UFA's once we have them. Sent from my ADR6350 using Tapatalk 2

#2530594 Next Seasons Needs/Team Future

Posted by VM1138 on 08 July 2014 - 12:27 PM

I'm thinking Z will play 70+ games.  Datsyuk should come close, too.  I just can't believe last year was anything but a ridiculous anomaly.  And as long as they're not injured at the same time, we should be fine for a few games without one of Datsyuk or Zetterberg.  There's just no way next year is as bad as last year.

Last season I joined the "Helm is made of glass" crowd, so I expect him to be injured.  Alfredsson will hopefully be resting throughout the season in back-to-back games, if he comes back.  I just think they will manage the injuries better.

There's always a fluke injury that sidelines someone for practically the whole season, but maybe we'll get lucky and it'll be one of the filler guys instead of one of the superstars we rely on.

#2530575 Article on FAs and Red Wings

Posted by VM1138 on 08 July 2014 - 10:07 AM

I'll agree with the first part, the city is not the issue...or at least is hasn't been for guys like Ivan Rodriguez, Magglio Ordonez, Carlos Guillen, Reggie Bush, Golden Tate, Chauncey Billups, etc. etc. etc.

On the subject of Babs I'll say this.  What happened in FA wasn't his fault.  He's not in charge of managing the roster.  I do, however, think that players don't look at him like they did at Bowman.  Sure, Scotty was a d*ck, but he coached a powerhouse team that realistically could win the cup every year.  Babs is a d*ck whose team isn't going to win s***.  So why deal with him?  Ken Hitchcock is notoriously difficult to play for, and he gets FAs because his team is a contender.  I think players would tolerate Babs if we could compete, but we can't, so they don't.  Not his fault, but it does play a part.

Of course, the Tigers have been a strong contender for years now, hence those guys coming to Detroit.  And Billups...well, I don't follow basketball but didn't he suck when he came back?  Likely no one else wanted him and he wanted to go somewhere familiar.

The point everyone is making about the city isn't that no one wants to come here just because of that, but if your team is not a contender, there's no reason to choose Detroit over Tampa or Washington or any place with more living perks.  If Detroit were winning, we wouldn't have trouble attracting UFAs.  But since we're not really any better than the rest of the middling teams, the city of Detroit isn't going to be a selling point.

In reality this is hardly a tough decision ask yourself this:

Would you trade Tatar, a first and a cap dump for a young Chara, Pronger ? Personally I would but everbody is different.

Of course most people would, but that's knowing how Chara and Pronger turned out. Just because they defied the odds doesn't mean Myers will.

Found this in a Google search: http://www.talk-spor...ustin_Byfuglien

An entire forum devoted to hating Byfuglien. I don't get it. He has a fitness problem. Or did, I don't know if he still does. But I see things like "rapper wannabe" and "rap sheet" which makes me wonder if its some weird race-based judgement. I mean, his rap sheet is what, a drunken boating charge? He doesn't seem that bad to me. Especially if he is turning his fitness level around.

#2529759 Hollands new contract a no brainer?

Posted by VM1138 on 03 July 2014 - 01:09 PM

Consider what you just wrote.

Resign and re-sign mean very different things.

If you meant resign, then Babcock will only re-sign if Holland is fired.

If you meant re-sign, it means Babcock will only re-sign if Holland returns.

Punctuation is important.

#2529754 When will we know about Alfie? (Legwand signed w. Sens)

Posted by VM1138 on 03 July 2014 - 12:55 PM

I seriously think Nill will poach Alfie away to Dallas...they, right now have a ay better lineup. From front to back...

That being said, I would sure like to have Legwand back.  If we are just going to go with nobody new this year and let our current kids develop, I think a leader like Legwand would help out.  Especially the overpayment #firekenholland paid for him.  Not saying Alfie isn't a good leader, but like I said, I think he will go to Dallas afterall, if he is healthy that is.  It would be nice to have Legwand signed up when that decision on Alfie comes down.

Not that I really care too much until #firekenholland is, well, fired or resigns...

Alfredsson says it's Detroit or retirement.  Doubt he moves to Dallas.

Wait a minute, wasn't the Legwand trade supposed to be good because "he is a sure signing this offseason". Why exacly is he "good as gone"? So we really did trade Jarnkrok for a 20 game rental to get us to a first round knockout?

He's as good as gone because the Wings didn't offer him a contract.  And I'm pretty sure they said he wasn't coming back the week we were eliminated.

I'd like to have Legwand back, too, but there's just no room for him.

Zetterberg-Datsyuk-Alfredsson

Franzen-Weiss-Nyquist

Tatar-Sheahan-Jurco

Miller-Helm-Glendening/Andersson/Cleary (Inevitably)

Where would Legwand fit? He'd most likely take Jurco's spot, as a third-liner.  And for whatever reason, Babcock dumped him on the fourth line when the playoffs hit.  Babcock's use of players boggles my mind sometimes.

Actually, looking at that lineup, I think our top six could use some work.  We do need that winger after all.
