#2679484 Detroit trades Datsyuk to Arizona

Sign three guys and pay them more than what Stamkos could score on his own. I seriously don't understand not wanting a bonafide superstar on this team
Imagine thinking having Okoposo as the centerpiece to your offense will take you anywhere in the playoffs. Great complimentary scorer but the wings are trying to build a new core
Having a team full of 15-20 goal scorers is how you never score in the playoffs

Thank you! I felt like the only one who saw this on bright, obvious flashing letters.

Considering the unthinkable. He has been out almost all season and his status is uncertain. What would you offer to trade for the Montreal goaltender Carey Price?

Nothing. He's better than Mrazek, sure, but it's been proven you can win without an elite goalie, and Mrazek will be one one day. Why waste assets for an injury prone goalie when we have a very, very good one who will hopefully be around for a very long time?

It's exactly the type of deal we said would happen while everyone told us how dumb we were to think any team would "do us a favor." Way to go, Kenny.

Lucic is already on the decline, isn't he? I remember reading some stuff from Boston when he left that he wasn't very good.  I think this is another case of us wanting the 5-year-ago version of a player.

I don't like tanking like some of you do, I think it's bad form, bad faith and just bad all around.  But if that's what they're asking for to trade Datsyuk's contract we should hang on to it.  Try and move some of the other chaff to free up space (Howard, Ericsson, etc.).  I don't want to tank for the first pick but there's no sense in losing our good prospects to move a contract that is mutually beneficial to both teams. If I were Holland I'd warn them that such demands would seriously compromise their reputation among the old boy's club.  But anyway, in that case it's best just to unload the chaff with no future just so we're in a better position next year to play the market.

Ericsson, for example, will only get worse.  This is the time to trade him, even if we get hardly anything in return.  And it's likely we wouldn't get much in return but it's better than sitting with his full contract for four years and having him take a roster spot.

I'm not a fan of paying $1000 for a decent computer but I'd do it if I needed a great computer. People act like Stamkos isn't one of the top few players in the world.

Franzen will likely remain on LTIR for the duration of his career (4 more seasons...).

We could really use Franzen, it's a shame what happened to him.

I'd like to see a ring of statues grace the new arena. It'd be a way of honoring the greats without necessarily retiring numbers.

We only need to trade Datsyuk's contract if we land Stamkos. I'd hardly rip on Holland for eating the cap hit for a year if he knows we absolutely cannot land Stamkos. That's the only big transformative move to be made, otherwise it's all incremental UFA improvements which won't cost much.

Buffalo is also close to Toronto, haha.

I just don't know if Toronto is close to shaking their perennial loser reputation. At least the Wings make playoffs. We are certainly closer to competing than the Leafs, so that's in our favor. Also he'd be our number one center, no chance he gets put on the wing here. Our franchise also has a reputation and money to blow. We may have struggled in recent years but we've set our mind on competing again and when the Wings really committ to winning, we win. We've just been in a weird holding pattern since 2010.

I don't know if that factors in but there's got to be a confidence that now that we've decided things have to changed our leadership knows how to do it.

I'd take Nielsen. Contrary to what people say we still need vets, just vets that can play or bring a certain dynamic. Our vets are currently just washed up.

Smith is an unbelievably good possession player, not just on the Red Wings but league wide. He's one of our top puck moving defensemen and by far our best skating defenseman. He's just now reaching his prime and I believe we will finally see exactly what he is capable of this year. He has never put up big points at the NHL level but there's no reason to think he can't crush his career highs this season. Even if he doesn't put up huge point totals, he's still very valuable because when he's on the ice, the puck spends more time in the offensive zone than the defensive zone...

Also, I'm not trying to knock Green because I think he had a much better year than most give him credit for, but for all the extra minutes he had over Smith, he finished the season with a whopping 1 single even strength point more than Smith... I know a lot of people don't think Smith has "earned" power-play time, but I think his point totals would double and the power-play would be more dangerous with Smith on one of the units...

This is a classic case of numbers without context. Nobody except a few fans think Smith is any good. Certainly he didn't stand out as a good possession guy, which partly led to his being benched for a good long while. He is certainly not a top four guy or a high level league player. If he was he wouldn't be so widely considered a disappointment.

There's something the numbers are missing. Because when he's on the ice he doesn't make smart decisions, doesn't do much more than crash the net. About all he can do is occasionally play keep away with the puck in his own end. He certainly doesn't make the team on the ice better when he's out there, except for his rare good stretches which are followed by a return to has natural sub-par play.

#2677440 Petition to change Lil Caesars Arena to Gordie Howe Arena

Posted by VM1138 on 11 June 2016 - 08:37 AM

As already pointed out, this is about money.  Naming rights are huge and are a major part of business plans.  They can't (even if they wanted to, probably) just change the name to a non-business name.  They'd lose out on hundreds of millions of dollars.  What they'll do is put a big statue of him out in front, name a street after him, or name a wing or part of the arena after him.

I think Toronto has something like a hall of legends, and I think the Wings need to do the same thing.  Statues of the greats (not just Howe and Lindsay, which are the ones that are currently at the Joe, I think) ringed around the arena.
