#2652269 2016 Trade Deadline Thread

Posted by VM1138 on Today, 04:25 PM

I just wish both Helm and management would realize that he is our modern day Kris Draper not Tomas Holmstrom... We need him to be our 4th line / penalty kill specialist, not top 6 / power-play net front / puck retriever... Maybe if he were being played accordingly, we could then pay him accordingly. Obviously if he's playing top 6, he'll expect to be paid like a top 6...

I feel like this is part of our problem. We stopped using several players the way they should be used because we never filled holes with the proper players. It's thrown everything out of whack.

Helm brings something special to the table, but only as a bottom sizer. With him being due for a raise, and is having so many bottom sixes, it's not a matter of Helm being underrated as much as a roster/cap decision.

Is he really? I think he'd be a decent piece to offer but I don't think he's anything more than a fourth liner who can handle greater duties on occasion.

I'm tired of the forever contracts. I hope Larkin stays forever but I'd rather see for year deals. In the cap crunch world, and with so many players declining overnight, it's time to forego the benefits of forever contracts and go back to normal ones.

I wouldn't be surprised to see us as sellers. We're going to lose some guys for nothing this off-season, and so many are underperforming I think even Holland might realize there are better options in the AHL (Oullete), so maybe he'll dangle some players for picks.  If he wants to build through the draft we need as many draft picks as possible, and we've got some bodies plugging up the works.

I think we'll make playoffs, and being sellers doesn't really jive with that mentality, but I think we can genuinely lose some people and not be any worse for wear.

I think the problem is the lack of trading partners in the new NHL. The CBA has basically killed most player movement.

#2651068 Forward Line Combos/Discussion

Posted by VM1138 on 05 February 2016 - 02:56 PM

I like the inclusion of Athanasiou but that lineup still isn't good. Like kip said, we have too many guys who can't actually play strong hockey. It doesn't matter how much they try or how close they are to tearing it up if they never do. What exactly do they expect that fourth line to do? Bigger bodies I guess but none of those guys are energy guys. I've never seen the team take things up a notch because of them.

The third line has potential as an energy line and a scoring threat. Maybe. The second line isn't going to work and we've seen that Datsyuk and Z aren't guaranteed magic together anymore.

We've got to cut a lot of guys who can look good but at the end of the day always *just* miss, screw up passes, and try but never actually do anything possession related.

#2650842 All Star Skills Competition

Posted by VM1138 on 31 January 2016 - 10:21 PM

Should we nullify hardest shot records now to because the sticks have flex? It's a skills competition record. It is meaningless fun.

Exactly. It's not like these guys are the best in the league in their skill category, either. I'm sure there's a fast player out there who could break that record who wasn't an all star this year. Same goes for every other category. Larkin was the fastest guy to perform in this years all star game, or anyone else in All Star games, not in hockey history.

I would trade Nyquist in a package for Byfuglien.  What would have to be added?  I would love to dump them E, but I don't think Chevy would take him.  BUT, I would offer Nyquist, E, Sproul for Byfuglien.

I like Buff but he's not worth a 30 goal scorer, a roster defenseman and a fairly high ranking prospect.

I think this team is struggling too much with every area to make any sort of run in the playoffs, so I don't see Holland making a move for a rental. My bet is he waits until the offseason to make some big moves. The usual, top four d-man, offensive Dynamo forward. Howard might be worth something but he's about all we have that could bring anything more than a draft pick that we'd be willing to part with.

Datsyuk wants Helm on his line
I think Blash straught up said that in a recent interview

I think this is the case where the coach needs to be the coach. Datsyuk may be the wily veteran and I get that you need to give them some control, but when it's not best for the team or the line the coach needs to step in.

#2618511 Wings sign Brad Richards 1 yr, $3 million

Posted by VM1138 on 01 July 2015 - 07:03 PM

The Richards signing kind of confuses me. I'm not sure what he brings to the table that we don't already have.  I guess he is center depth but we already have so many third-line caliber centers.  We already had veteran presence but I guess they felt we needed a bit more.

#2617455 Free agents this off season

Saad is reportedly only asking for $4 million and Chicago is hesitant. Offer sheet him $5 and watch the Hawks squirm. What's that, two second round picks? Worth it.

#2615370 Will Wings Revisit Signing Phaneuf?

Posted by VM1138 on 19 June 2015 - 08:07 PM

Khan says Wings are no longer interested in Phaneuf.  I'm betting Babcock nixed any deal, like most of us believed he would.

#2615000 Free agents this off season

Posted by VM1138 on 17 June 2015 - 10:10 PM

Saw on twitter something about how the flyers haven't made any contact with lecavaliers agent on buying him out .... I was curious and went and check

Lecavalier has 3 years 4.5 cap hit left

I'm Not saying id do it but weiss has 3 years and 4.9 cap hit left

Would anyone take a gamble and make the trade?and then buy out lecavalier if he's god awful?

Contracts similar so it's 2 teams trading a problem for another

I'd probably try and trade weiss with some of his salary paid , rather then dealing with his contract for 4 years , or the 2nd option would be to just bury him in Grand Rapids for the season

Lecavalier is worse than Weiss at this point.  Weiss can still rebound. Lecavalier is done.

I can see a Phaneuf for Weiss, Smith and a 1st trade happening at the draft.

Babcock will never let this happen.  His going there has basically killed any chance of getting Phaneuf.

I know he's not a defenseman, but if the Sharks are shopping Thornton I'd definitely inquire about what it would take to get him.  He'd really solidify us up front, where we still need a little work, even if it's not the number one priority.
