#2577886 Red Wings acquire Marek Zidlicky from NJ for Cond. 2016 3rd Round Pick

Posted by VM1138 on Today, 09:10 AM

People saying Zidlicky is small and can't play defense, he can play defense. But that's not really why he is here. He is here because he can make the first pass out of the defensive zone, knows how to quarterback a powerplay, and has a right-handed shot. Not all of our defensemen need to be shut down defensmen. Sure it's great to get a guy that can do both but those guys aren't available without giving up the farm.

Exactly. He's here for a very specific role. He will provide what Smith and Kindl were supposed to provide.

Are both cole and zid rentals? Do u think we will resign themSent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I haven't finished reading this thread so this might be redundant by now, but I wanted to chime in.

Cole is not a rental in my mind. While he's on the other side of his peak, as long as his back holds up he can be effective for a few years. 36 isn't dead. Plus, he's the kind of player we've needed for years. We won't just pass on that. Players like Mantha and Jurco need someone to teach them how to be proper power forwards. I think Holland's intent is to work out a longer deal with him.

Zidlicky is more likely to be a rental. A few years older, a place holder until a more long term fix is found. But even he might come back next year, but I bet it would hinge on what defenseman leave in the offseason. Whereas I think Cole has a role on our team that isn't in danger of being supplanted by a kid anytime soon.

Wow, the Wings won that deal. I'm really excited now. If we land a defenseman of a top four caliber we are going to be a tough team to beat.

I keep telling myself nothing will happen. That all my anticipation will be met with anticlimax like it does every year, but I just can't stop myself from checking for updates every so often.

I'm not all that familiar with Erik Cole, but the idea of someone like that sounds good.  Even if he is 37.  If he's cheap enough a little veteran presence wouldn't hurt us.  We went from being way old to way young and I wouldn't mind adding a short-term fix if he's cheap enough.

It's more than just "does this team need improvement?"  If Tampa and Montreal improve, then we become worse by default.  Since we'll be facing these guys in the playoffs it's important we keep up with them if at all possible.  That's another dimension to consider.

I see why Florida did this. They've been rebuilding so long there's probably pressure to do something now. They are knocking on the door of the playoffs and Jagr can help give them a boost in depth. I don't know what their bench looks like but they probably were willing to give up a pick in favor of making playoffs and adding a bit more scoring. Maybe it's an overpayment but not a major one. They probably couldn't have gotten anyone else for that price.

Nyquist will get a big payday when his contract is up. No one else currently on te team will command much more money. Pulkinnen still hasn't proven anything so they'll qualify him, maybe with a small pay increase. I'm really not concerned about cap space.

I'd rather focus on a scoring forward. Fact is, prices are too high and the selection is too slim. Best to make a move for a top 6 forward while teams are focused on defense. No one available save maybe Yandle really helps us on the back end. We already have depth, we need a top 2 guy. And since we do need more reliable scoring (Tatar and Nyquist and everyone else disappearing last year, plus a decent amount of shutouts against this year) might as well make the move now.

Grab a forward now while prices may be low, then sign a FA defenseman come summer.

#2569807 Do we need a trade to get our offence going ?

I'd assumed they were looking to package Kane and Bogosian together. I think I said so here or on SBNation.

Bogosian's bombed pretty hard, and everyone hates Kane, but those are basically the two pieces we're looking for - a premier power forward with serious issues (otherwise, his team wouldn't be trading him) and a right-shot defenseman who can log big minutes. So in that sense it's kind of a bummer. (Not to mention the fact that we get to see Kane five times every season now. Ugh.) But I'm assuming Cheveldayoff would've wanted Nyquist or Tatar.

Bogosian has like 13 points.  He's always been way overrated.

#2569621 Original Six...Sorta?

It means something because people like history. These are the oldest teams with vaunted histories and legends. That's all. There's no rule they have to be rivals. Detroit and Chicago, for example, have been rivals in several sports. But the legends and the rivalries that do exist have had time to mature and get intense. Newer teams with shorter histories just don't have the same experience.

Whoever said we don't have space for a big contract is wrong. We've got $8 million in space right now. And we are relying on cheap drafted players for the future. We've got plenty of cap space moving forward.

I know he's played years in the NHL already but I'm just not seeing why Myers over Marchenko would be an improvement.

Chelios.  Skill, longevity, and accomplishments are unrivaled among American-born players. Leetch and Modano are up there, too, but like others have said, Modano was never the greatest at his position, so it's hard for him to take away the top spot from Chelios, who was.

#2565395 2017 Winter Classic Red wings vs. Blue Jackets?

Posted by VM1138 on 21 January 2015 - 10:50 AM

No one really thinks Detroit-Columbus would be a good Winter Classic, right?  I don't think in the entire existence of the Columbus franchise I've ever been excited about a game against them.  Putting them outside won't change that.

If you're doing a throwback/heritage style event you need heritage/throwback style teams.  It's got to be Detroit versus an original six team.  Or at least one of the teams from the '67 expansion.
