#2453407 11/12 GDT : Jets 3 at Red Wings 2 (SO)

Missed the game, but it sounds just like the others.

Our biggest pproblems seem to be lack of defensive support for the offense and Babcock's last minute choices. I don't care if Lashoff and Oullet are rookies, they are more dependable than Quincey and Kindl. And how will players like Tatar and Lashoff and Oullet learn to play in clutch situations if they can't see the ice in crucial times in the regular season?

I'm not a Babcock water, but he has really lacked his usual mojo this year and last.

Helm has hands of stone.  He's not going to be up in the top six for very long.  I love Helm almost as much as Datsyuk but we have to remain realistic.  There was a brief era of time a few years ago where it looked like Helm might become a real top six guy if he could get his scoring touch together, but he didn't.  We have to get out of this mentality that bottom sixers need to somehow elevate themselves.  It's probably why Holland though signing a hodgepodge of chaff would work out.

Helm is the best third line center in the league.  I'm good with that.  Keep Weiss up on the second and let Tatar and Alfredsson tear the ice up.

Edit: But with Weiss and Franzen injured, I guess we don't have a choice, haha.  At any rate the second line won't be a defensive disaster, and they'll have speed.

But his butt-busting isn't helping us.  He loses every race for the puck, turns over the puck all the time, makes poor decisions and is always behind the play.  Right now the fact is Cleary isn't doing anything, and is more frequently hurting the team than Franzen.  Franzen doesn't really hurt the team at all.  He just doesn't help as much as he could.

#2451848 Tootoo Waived

Posted by VM1138 on 07 November 2013 - 09:08 PM

DeKeyser also played youth hockey with Jim Nill's son, so they knew each other.  I'm sure that helped.  Other teams may have offered immediate icetime (the Wings supposedly had no plans of playing him right away) but ultimately, the draw of playing at home was probably the biggest factor.  If we're going to cite it as a reason the Wings lost out on Parise and Suter, we have to acknowledge it as a reason they got DeKeyser.

I'm not surprised Tootoo was waived and I'm not surprised he cleared.  I do like him, I was surprised when the Wings signed him, and I was shocked and disappointed when I saw the terms of his contract.  He had been making $1.2M per year in Nashville and was phased out of their lineup.  Why a 3-year deal and why such a big raise?  It's obviously come back to burn Holland.  I think he should have offered somewhere between $1M-1.3M per year, and if Tootoo rejected it, move on.  You can't pay 4th-line/healthy scratch players that kind of money.

Samuelsson is another story... he made $2.5M per year on his Vancouver contract.  He was productive (74gp--30g-23a--53pts, 75--18-32--50, and 54--14-17--31 in the 3 years) but missed some time each season, especially in the last year, split between Vancouver and Florida.  Although I hated the signing from day one, it's reasonable to expect that production should have (and maybe would have, barring the injuries) continued, even if it decreased somewhat.  You can blame Holland for that signing (I do), but you can't blame him for the lack of results.

I can't trash Holland for signing Samuelsson.  It made some degree of sense at the time.  But multi-year and NTC did not.

This has "disaster" written all over it. First home game after a road trip, against a middling team with speed, and a homecoming of sorts for Nill. These are the games the Wings forget to show up for.

If Dallas has a player playing their first ever NHL game, that seals the deal.

Yeah, it just means they will tear up the regular season but flop when they face real teams in the playoffs. Like they've done since 2009.

If he was benched Babcock would have said so. Sending a message. Either something is seriously wrong or Babcock and Holland are seriously considering getting rid of him. Who needs "practice time" after not being sure if you were injured or sick?

Maybe he has some respiratory infection? "Upper body" and all that. But then, why not say so?

I wonder if he's pulling a Sammy and just rubbing the Wings face in his lack of desire.

I agree that we need help on defense.  Sure, I'd like to see this team grow, but that will take years.  In the meantime, we can bolster them with a UFA or a trade.  I don't know who or how.  But we definitely need more "real" depth on D.  Sort of like how we're "deep" at forward, but only in 4th line forwards.

He tends to be dry. Almost like a second play by play guy, but he's brand new to it. At least he can formulate a sentence unlike Murphy, Haha.

He'll get better soon. He already looks more comfortable than he did a few weeks ago, and the natural storytelling comes with experience.

That's how I feel.  When did we stop going for the Cup every year?  We have to have a long-term vision, I get that.  But when you're always waiting for tomorrow's kids to miraculously become all-stars, you're missing out on chances to win here and now.

For all the troubles with this team, the problems aren't un-fixable.  We're tied for 2nd in our division and 6th in our conference early in the season.  A good winning streak like most teams have and we could be on top.  Tweak a few things while you can and win NOW.

Wow, two good chances in 13 games.  Let's give him an extension right now.

I'm not even a Franzen hater but this guy is delusional lately.

What is Babcock thinking? Didn't take long to break up that third line. Abdelkader and Cleary do not belong in the top 6. Do. Not. Belong.

Is like to see us trade a prospect for an established A-lister in their mid-20s. Better to win now than pin your hopes on some kid or as-yet-undrafted player of the future.

Not saying trade picks and prospects like no tomorrow, but two players and a couple of picks for a Norris-caliber defenseman would benefit us more than those prospects.

All right, people. Let's keep this about Varlamov. If it's going to be about abuse in general thus thread will ave to be moved. Also, keep the discussion from getting personal.
