#2120070 Osgood's status could prompt trade at deadline

Posted by VM1138 on 21 February 2011 - 08:20 PM

Yeah but the obvious downside to that is you could trade away a guy who spends 10 years in the AHL. I think the player is important but I think the front office and the coaching staff is what makes some of these players soooo good. Yeah raw talent is important, but we have to worry about this year. We are going to make a run for the President's cup, we have to have a decent backup. Every time MacDonald get's in between the pipes, I pick off every finger and toe nail I have. Just his inexperience makes me super nervous.

Agreed. Trading picks doesn't concern me so much since the Wings are great at finding gems late-round.

Terribly boring game with a few spurts of excitement. I hate watching Minnesota games.

Awesome for Bert to put the nail in the coffin in his 1,000th game, too. Glad to see Howard only allow one goal.

It's nice to see the Wings can still win close games and hold their own in a defensive battle.

Boring but good game all around.

On a side note, I was actually pleased with the NBC broadcast. It was well assembled and I actually had forgotten all about Darren Pang. The announcers were such a relief, especially compared to other NBC broadcast teams. I love how calm and collected Pang is, no forced emotions to try and hype things up. Also, his stories just seem to flow more naturally, whereas when Doc says them it sounds like he's reciting something from a state book or encyclopedia entry.

#2119264 Winter Classic to Detroit?!

Posted by VM1138 on 20 February 2011 - 11:20 AM

This isn't going to be played at Michigan Stadium because alcohol cannot be sold there. This is the reason why an NHL game won't be played there.

Also, everyone at LGW bitched with Pittsburgh got another crack at the Winter classic. Yet, when Detroit is mentioned, everyone is ok with it? What a bunch of crap. I am against it as well. I say they involve some other teams.

Once again, alcohol COULD be served, it's not a university sanctioned event.

And yeah, we complained about Pittsburgh getting another one, but that just shows the "each team gets a chance" theory is out the window. It no longer applies, therefore, we're okay with Detroit getting another one.

#2117237 Was '97 or '02 team better?

Posted by VM1138 on 16 February 2011 - 10:51 AM

'02 was hailed as one of the greatest teams all time even before they stepped on the ice. To me, it's not really an argument. As for that fan bracket on Sporting News, I'm not surprised that it comes down to the '70s Canadiens and '02 Wings. However, I remember a lot of experts at the time saying Montreal was better so I'm betting that is the team that will win that particular vote.

I think an interesting debate would be the '52 or '02 Wings, though. Had the team not been dismantled the Wings could've gone on to challenge or even beat Montreal in total Cups won. Those 50's Wings teams were among the greatest ever in my mind.

EDIT: Some people are mixing up "best team" with "best storyline" I think. '97 was great, but there's no way it can stack up to the '02 team in talent, which is what "best" generally means in my mind.

#2116667 In Ten Years From Now

At least 3 Cups?

Yes. We did 4 in 11, why not 3 in 10? What's so ridiculous about that? Especially considering this is the most battle-tested team playoffs-wise in the league, which makes them uniquely prepared for long runs.

Even better, the team won 3 Cups in 6 years. No other team in the league has shown the sort of consistency needed to win multiple cups, which opens the field quite a bit.

#2116408 Forsberg Joins Avalanche

Posted by VM1138 on 14 February 2011 - 12:11 PM

Well, I figured it'd be an injury after two games, but retirement works the same, I guess.

How can you give up so fast, though? I don't see how you can go from thinking you can play in the NHL to giving up after two games. If you were that close to retiring anyway, why even bother with the comeback? Kind of a ****** move. You'd think if you are so unable to play that you give up after two games you would've known a week ago you couldn't do it.

I don't see why people think Stuart coming back is going to save the defense, it was terrible when he was in it, too.

#2114606 mccrimmon

Posted by VM1138 on 11 February 2011 - 10:54 AM

It may not be 100% his fault, but not only did the numbers tank after McCrimmon got here, he was also renowned for being a terrible defensive coach in Atlanta. Those are two HUGE coincidences.

It wouldn't hurt to replace him.

Also, for all our talk about complacency among the D-core, is that not one of the signs of a weak coach? They set the tone for the players.

I feel the need to point out again that Howie always spoke highly of you, along with one other poster here.

 I suppose I am becoming a bit of a basher, but he's just been so damn disappointing. I think other than Jason Williams, he's been the one Red Wing I can remember ever since I started watching them that I just don't have much faith in at all. Lebda was fun to make fun of, too, I guess, but I was on the Lebda>Lilja bus for a couple of seasons. Look, I can admit when Howard is good, which I think sets me apart from an actual "basher." If you look through my history, there have been plenty of "Howard is a god" type comments from me, but come on, two months of vastly sub-par performances is more than a slump.

However, I will be more than happy to lay off of him once he strings together...I don't know, four 2 goal or less games in a six game stretch, just to put out a random benchmark.

#2104260 NHL ASG Entertainment to Suck

Looks like those ASG attendees will be graced with the likes of Clay Aiken and the Canadian Tenors. Really? Sounds like an amazing time full of good music and...wait...what's that you say? An on-ice introduction of the Guardian Project superheroes!

It's like Barney on Ice!

#2104244 Wings Have To Toughen Up Soon

Posted by VM1138 on 24 January 2011 - 12:01 PM

Exactly. Last time I checked it takes two to tango. Teams like Anaheim and Philly don't scare other teams into submission, because people still hit them and engage in fights with them.

Gritty is really entertaining, if we're talking grit and not enforcers, but I tend to think out bottom 6 is pretty gritty. I don't see grit has pure hitting, though. I look at Helm digging in the corners and holding off three guys to make the play as grit.

#2104243 How does Marty Turco REALLY feel about Pierre McGuire?

Well, I guess we found a new Internet meme for whenever Pierre does something retarded, haha.

#2104219 Wings Have To Toughen Up Soon

Posted by VM1138 on 24 January 2011 - 10:35 AM

I don't understand. They're not the Broad Street Bullies but they do hit in about even numbers with their opponents. When they play a tough team they usually step it up and often outhit them (Anaheim, for example). And to say they play with no heart is ridiculous. When the games matter they throw it all on the line. Anyone who watches them recognizes their patented 3rd period comebacks. They may not play 100% all of the time, but they never, ever give up and usually find ways to grind out wins.

#2103775 Nabokov claimed by NYI, refuses to report, suspended

Posted by VM1138 on 23 January 2011 - 12:31 AM

How does this show the true colors of the NYI management team? If anything it shows the true colors of Nabokov. Again he knew what could happen when he signed. Things didn't go according to plan and now he is the one bitching about how it came out and NYI are to blame? What a load of crap! If he didn't like the risks he shouldn't of signed a contract.

What unspoken side of things? If that was true St. Louis would've gotten their guys last year. Or whoever it was that lost the 2 players to waivers.

I wasn't saying that players don't get claimed. I'm saying players of Nabakov's caliber and his unique circumstances should be allowed to get picked up by a quality team. Again, he adds nothing to the Isles, who won't be able to keep him past this year and won't make playoffs or make any kind of noise, it'll be hard for Nabakov to showcase his skills and thus make it harder for him to sign a good contract next year. Therefore, the Isles just basically screwed Nabakov and any team near the playoffs that could've benefited from having Nabakov for what? Two or three extra wins that won't matter? I hope Snow enjoys those few extra wins, because they're going to cost him dearly.

EDIT: And for those who think Nabakov is being a ****** bag, remember, he has NO obligation to the Isles. Sure, they claimed him, but honestly, it could be career suicide to go there. If you think about that, it takes on a whole new level. Plus, I bet he doesn't cause a ruckus if a team closer to the playoffs claimed him. But it's the freaking Islanders, even Osgood said they suck.

Holy crap, it looks like one of those Make a Wish grants where a little kid gets to play a game with the adults, haha.
