#2236421 Best Red Wings Books

Posted by VM1138 on 16 December 2011 - 12:44 AM

Blood Feud by Adrian Dater. He's a Colorado beat writer, but the book is amazing in its balance. Show the intensity of the Colorado-Detroit rivalry in all its behind-the-scenes glory.

But I second the "What It Means to Be a Red Wing" and "Good, the Bad and the Ugly." Great books.

Also, there are two books, one on Howe and one on Lindsay that are cool collector's books. They are called "9" and "7" respectively. I think they're mostly photographs.

#2235828 Can Conner reasonably be sent down?

Posted by VM1138 on 14 December 2011 - 12:17 AM

Conner has been great so far. He's clearly had more impact than Emmerton (who we won't even remember played this season a year from now) or Brunnstrom. No reason to send him down, he's doing great.

#2235809 Good game, good game, good game...

I guess I'll be the stick in the mud. No one sees anything wrong with crowds cheering on 9 year olds punching each other after a game? I mean...aside from it being weird to endorse child fighting, it was after the game...after the handshake line. I know they're just kids, but hopefully the coaches brought the hammer down after that.

#2235251 Crosby has "concussion symptoms"

Posted by VM1138 on 13 December 2011 - 09:55 AM

Yes let's wish that a player never plays again because the media promotes him after having one the best starts to a career in the history of the game.

Stay classy wing's fans.

This is awful news, he's such an important player for the league, it will not be the same without him. Such a shame.

I don't understand this mentality. He's not any better for the game than Ovechkin or Stamkos or anyone else. Maybe because he sells more jerseys? As far as the actual game goes, he's not even the best player in the league (arguably), so his loss would suck for Pens fans but I think the league will do just fine.

#2235248 Loyalty Question

Posted by VM1138 on 13 December 2011 - 09:47 AM

I like to collect Original 6 stuff. Obviously a vast majority of my hockey stuff is Red Wings, but I do think it's cool to have some other stuff, especially if you like showing stuff off. I'd like one day to have a game room/bar in my house and in it I'd like to have a section for Original 6 stuff to go with all my Red Wings stuff.

#2233072 Realignment decided - 4 Conferences

Posted by VM1138 on 05 December 2011 - 10:20 PM

Would you rather have us in a division with the Hawks, Pens and Bruins or something?

And those reject teams are who we're playing against now.

Plus Minnesota, Dallas and Winnipeg.

That's my point. Technically, travel wise the Wings made out okay. But other than the Hawks, none of those teams are consistently good. Which means each and every year we will play the Hawks and the other round will rotate. Nothing changes. I think a lot of us wanted to see Original 6 matchups with real rivalries instead of the fake rivalries we've been fed for years.

Not a terrible realignment, just not really all that different for the Wings other than some shorter travel.

What Bettman wants Bettman gets. We all should have seen this coming.

I guess nothing really changes for Detroit except that the first two rounds will likely be boring as all get out from here on out. I really wanted to move East, but I guess it's hard to argue that when Columbus is farther east than us.

Too bad, as the Western Conference Finals are usually better than the Cup Finals. Would have liked to play a Western team for the Cup.

EDIT: And copping out is what is done nowadays, not just with the NHL. With politics, business, everything. The option that requires more thinking or work, no matter how much better it is, will never be adopted.

#2232294 Wings to host NHL Winter Classic within next 2 years

I'll say it again, I don't want Minnesota anywhere near a nationally televised Winter Classic. Talk about turning people off of the game.

#2231792 Red Wings recall forward Chris Conner from Grand Rapids

Posted by VM1138 on 01 December 2011 - 11:16 PM

this is what I wanted to hear. I miss Patty, but this guy may just have gotten his chance at the Big Club. We shall see!! I am envisioning a Cleary-type story of "here's my chance, I am gonna make the most of it."

No offense, but everyone expects every call-up to be the next Cleary. And every low-budget signing to be the next Cleary. He will likely be just a roster filler who adds a bit of speed but doesn't do much else. I think on Pittsburgh last year he was a semi-regular 4th liner. In 5 years in the NHL he has 40 points. He's being called up because they'd rather not keep sending the other guys up and down and mess with their development.

#2231740 12/2 GDT : Red Wings 4 at Sabres 1

Posted by VM1138 on 01 December 2011 - 04:42 PM

I don't want to nitpick or bite the hand that feeds, but these GDT's getting posted a day in advance are really throwing me off and getting my hopes up for games the day they're posted, haha.

#2230808 Acquiring a top six forward

Posted by VM1138 on 29 November 2011 - 10:04 AM

Many people here seem to be unaware that he's been crap so far this season. Knee injuries can have long-term impacts.

Who cares if he's not having a blistering year so far? The guy has been in the league 6 years (plus games this season). Four of those he's had over 60 points. Except for his first year (understandable) and last year, when he was injured most of the season.

He's an 80 point getter and he'd be a great pickup.

Just say "no" to the "Logo Hunter". :hehe:

Depending what happens to Cleary or Bertuzzi, Sammy would be an acceptable replacement for a third liner who can fill in on the second line, though he's not high on anyone's list, I don't think. He's not the solution but he'd be a good replacement if we lose someone.

#2230428 Bylsma Defends Crosby's Elbow on Foligno

Posted by VM1138 on 27 November 2011 - 03:39 PM

Yup, that and Crosby actually hid behind his GOALIE after starting the scrum.

A goalie named "Flowers" no less. How big of a pansy can you be?

#2228798 Ian White expected to return on Wednesday

Posted by VM1138 on 22 November 2011 - 05:43 PM

The kid showed he had more upside than E or Kindl (and I like Kindl). He just played so well, and what's more he looked much more confidence than Kindl has, as good as Kindl has played.

Smith, in my mind, is starting at basically where Kindl is operating at right now. At this point it's best to leave him up with the big squad, small minutes or not. Let him get used to the NHL level.

Ideally we could run:

Send Commodore down to the AHL, and Ericsson can be a scratch.

#2228266 Crosby coming back

Posted by VM1138 on 20 November 2011 - 11:33 PM

Agree. There's no blind hatred, and it's not just limited to Detroit. Cindy hears it from the fans in most, if not all arenas outside Pittsburgh.

Crosby's one of those athletes who's had everything handed to him in life. When he doesn't get his way, he doesn't know how to handle his emotions. He's probably whined his way through life. Even with all his talent, it's tough to respect a guy like that.

Eeeeexactly. I hate when people say it's blind hatred. The guy is a total tool. I think NHL fans have made themselves quite clear in their Crosby-hate. He is popular, but mostly among Pittsburgh fans (a large demographic) and casual NHL fans who don't really follow the sport. And it's not just that teams only like their players. Ovechkin is hugely popular, as is Ryan Miller, and both are among the best. The NHL did market Ovie for a while, but it seems most of the press he gets is of his own making (endorsements, etc.) or if he's playing Crosby. The sheer circle jerk for Crosby makes it worse. The guy is good, but he gets 10x the coverage and he's not 10x as good as the other superstars. It just makes us fans feel that he doesn't deserve it, and we see all these guys that do not get any attention.

#2227939 Crosby coming back

Posted by VM1138 on 20 November 2011 - 06:02 PM

Crosby is just an unlikable guy.

At any rate, I guess this means the Thanksgiving Wings-Boston game will just be a Crosby fest even though Pittsburgh won't be playing. Being on NBC and all.

Crosby doens't carry the CHARISMA Wayne Gretzky had. That's why he doesn't cross over as an athlete who's well liked by Sports Fans in general. Hell, most NHL Fans don't seem to like him, except for those in Pittsburgh. Therefore, I don't really care about his return. Hockey has been the same for me with or without Sidney Crosby.

Amen. He doesn't dominate or represent the sport the way someone like LeBron (like it or not) represents the NBA. He is a world-class player, but he's playing during a time that there are several candidates just as good as him. The point is there was no debating Gretzky was the best of his time, yet people argue all the time that certain players are better than Crosby. He's just another superstar to most fans.
