Why are the Wings still in on him for the rumored price Filppula is seeking?
Key word: rumored.
Seriously, with Lecavalier gone, who is a better option for 2C on the FA market? I hope we resign Flip at this point, even if we have to go as high as $4.5m. Because lets face it, we're not going to make a big time trade and there are no better options that are less of a gamble than Flip.
Has there been a free agent signing in the past year that we havent said "Overpayment"? Maybe we, not only fans but Wings managment as well, need to get off our high horses about "overpaying" players. Prices go up, that's how the world works.
Oh come on, I'm a Wings fan more than a Filppula fan and if it was between signing Lecavalier or Filppula I'd pick Lecavalier. That said if we can't get him, I think Filppula simply had an off year and will be back to his 11-12 form next season and would want him back.
Maybe, but that's rather speculative. Filppula is 29 and has one solid season of production in a larger role. That came on the wing playing with Henrik Zetterberg. I think we can all agree that paying Filppula (again) for "potential" isn't ideal, especially at 5.5 per season.
This is a track record contract and unfortunately Filppula doesn't really have much to show for his demands.
I agree with all of this. I also agree with FlashyG about having Lecavalier for a second line center instead of Filppula (I'd like both, if we have the space). I just think people are giving Filppula way to little credit.
Holland likely s*** the bed. Flip was having a poor regular season, and from what I remember, there were indications he'd be asking for a bigger contract. Teams were overpaying at the deadline, and we should have been all over that.
I know the Wings were trying to make the playoffs themselves, but in the long term, Filppula should have been shipped.
Keeping Filppula got us within 1 goal of having a serious chance at winning the cup. Hindsight is 20/20, but there is no way to say that Filppula should have been traded unless it was for a star.
Filppula is not worth $5m, plain and simple. I don't think he's even worth $4m. You say Filppula contributes a lot; I disagree. I think he is far from an impact player, and he's invisible when he isn't producing. He fit best as a third-line center, and he wants to be paid like a first-line center.
So you're just refusing to address any of the arguments I make, and then just rehash what everyone already thinks anyway?
I don't want to pay him even $5m right now either because we can't know what player is going to show up. But if he is scoring 60-70 points, yeah, he's worth $5m. You can't tell me he's not. Filppula was 12th in even strength scoring in 11-12 (ahead of Datsyuk and Zetterberg) despite playing far less at even strength than anyone who scored as much as him at even strength and is one of the better defensive forwards in the league. If you told a GMs a player was going to have those kind of stats next year, he'd get 6 or 7 million. This is why I'd like to see him get a 2 year contract for around what me makes now to see if he can play at that level. If not, sign him for cheap or let him walk.
because he tries to pass the puck on a breakaway.
I'll paypal you $20 right now if you can find a video of one time he was on a breakaway and passed the puck.
And 66 points is a lot of points for someone who literally kills offense.
He failed because he's a worse version of everything we already have
So should our team only be Datsyuk and Zetterberg because everyone else is just a worse version of them (a hockey player)?
