Don't see how it matters which guy is better than the other.
I'm still just angry about losing Lilja.
Weiss is not the total loss you so ardently try to make him out to be.
I'm not ruling out Weiss. I haven't been able to watch that many Wings games this season (school/no cable at my house), but from what I've seen he generally looks good. I don't doubt the points will come. My only argument is that he will never do better than Filppula - not because Filppula is way better, but because he will succumb to the same problems Filppula had: linemates who are either lazy or can't make plays. Filppula current production is what I've always expected out of him and he is doing it because he is actually playing with decent linemates.
Weiss has had a more successful career than Fil...
Really? Wiess has basically been the Panther's #1 guy forever while Filppula, at absolute best, has been #4 in the depth chart, and more like around #5/6/7 for most of his career. And Weiss has only marginally more PPG than Filppula (.59 vs .53). Filppula also has a Stanley Cup and has never missed the playoffs. If I was a hockey player, I would much rather have Filppula's career over Weiss.
I'm glad flip is gone he isn't worth what he was asking. For 3.5mil I would be glad to have him back, but the simple fact is he could not center his own line, period.
Tell that to Steve Yzerman and the lighting, where he has 8 points in 9 games centering his own line. Filppula isn't the problem. His wingers are. This is being proven with Weiss.
We get it, you have a hard on for Flip, I'm glad you have already written off Weiss after 10 games on a new team. Also, Flip was playing with Z and D the last three years and his stats were still pathetic (aside from the fluke year). How about we give Weiss an opportunity with Zetterberg or Datsyuk before saying he will never produce the 40 points Flip used to.
I'm not writing off Weiss. I'm saying that we could bring in any second line center we want and our second line will suck because we have s***ty wingers our top six. I don't have to convince you. It's being proven on the ice as it will be proven through the rest of the season. And to say that a second line center who you think is better than Filppula only having 2 points in 11 games is just him "warming up to a new team", that's ridiculous. Filppula probably never went a stretch of having 2 points in 11 games outside of last season and maybe his first couple years. If Flip's 40 points is pathetic, what does that make Weiss, who you're trying to hard to make excuses for? I could see somewhat lower production because of a new team, but 2 points in 11 games? That is pathetic.
And I'm all in favor of having Weiss play with Zetterberg or Datsyuk.
So now you're saying that Filppula did poorly because his linemates on the Wings were a bunch of lazy lugs. Wow. No offense, but if that's really how you feel, then perhaps you should go cheer for the Lightning instead.
I'm sorry, but have you and I been watching different National Hockey Leagues? One in which Franzen, Sameulsson, Bertuzzi and Cleary are skilled workhorses who make the players around them better?
And I've been saying for years, with basically everyone telling me I was wrong, that Filppula had 70 point potential. His 66 point season was a long time coming, which proved me right, and the next year was simply an off year in which he was weighed down by lazy linemates, a shortened season which he was injured leading up to and the pressure of a contract year. He'll scored 60 again this year, if not 70 or more.
No way he becomes a more offensively complete player than Flip. And that assist number is crazy, look at his career.
Aside from the obvious post just to knock Filppula, he scored 10 goals in a little more than half a season last year and the season before that he had 14 assists with a full season. Playing with Z and Pav for a whole year and getting some confidence/experience, I could see him doubling those numbers. I'm not saying it absolutely will happen, but it's more than possible.
