He made significant offers to both of the top FA's available this offseason, they chose to play at home over joining the Wings. He is after the next biggest FA available and is waiting to hear back, and had preliminary talks with the #4 FA, who appears to be waiting to see what happens with Doan.
On top of all that he's had significant trade talks with Nashville for Weber, with Phoenix for Yandle, and even attempted to get Nash from Columbus.
He can't make teams trade with him if they don't want too, and paying extra just for the sake of making a major change is more likely to land us in the lottery rather than the playoffs.
I'm not sure what you're expecting, but this has been the most active Ken Holland has been in an offseason in 15 years.
But that post wasn't just about Weber anyway, it seems all offseason hes a day late and a dollar short, instead of making a bold move, it seems hes content with taking this team into next season come hell or high water, and that's my problem.
He WAS making a bold move in being one of the major players involved in trade talks with the Predators. Sending Weber an offer sheet would have been foolish, not bold; the Predators would have certainly matched an offer sheet from a divisional rival, and this would mean a guarantee of seeing Weber six or more times per season for the rest of his career. It would have made even less sense in light of the fact that a trade was possible.
I understand you're upset, but what you're saying makes no sense.
If they could afford to match it then good for them but at least we would have had a chance at landing him. I guess all I'm trying to say is I believe that we would have had a better chance at signing him to an offer sheet rather than trying to work out a trade. Could be wrong - just my opinion.
It indeed could be wrong. I think it is.
even better, trade him at the deadline
The trade deadline is in February. A calendar year would end in July of next season.
I agree, Howard is good but he hasn't been good enough to give us an advantage in really right playoff series.
I disagree. Many of the goals that Nashville scored were the result of defensive lapses in which Howard was hung out to dry. He wasn't great but we did not lose because of him. Howard has only been in the playoffs for 3 years. The first year he wasn't very good but you can give him as pass because it was his first time. The second year he was awesome - 0.923 save %. Last year he was hung out to dry.
the big thing with Suter and Parise is not so much that they're the best players on their teams, but that they play the game right. they have that workman attitude that would fit great with the Wings and that's why they're a perfect fit for this organization. i'd rather have guys like them then Semin, Kovalchuk, Green...guys that like to be flashy but provide only that to the team. i'd rather have Parise cause he's works his ass off every shift and forchecks like a bulldog and despite his 15 points in 24 playoff games, he was one of the big reasons they were there cause his work ethic rubbed off on the rest of the guys except Kovalchuk, he's just a prima donna dbag. Suter is the calm dman we need to replace Lids back there to play big minutes with Kronner and maybe with Smith to have a strong D partner to help get him to that top tier as an NHL dman. Those 2 are exactly what the Wings need to be back on top. add in a guy like Prust and things are great for us Wings fans. I still thing Schultz and Garrison are good pickups too if Holland can wrangle up a crew and say, hey...let's win the next 5 cups. K go.
I strongly disagree. Kovalchuk has DRASTICALLY changed his game. I know there were a few games where it looked like he was floating around, but it's been confirmed he had a back injury. And us Red Wing fans can't really throw stones at those who aren't THAT effective nursing a back injury. He's come along way since ATL.
He's not better than Parise. Besides, Parise is much, much better defensively and actually works hard night in, night out. And we'd still have to give up assets to get Stewart. The Blues would probably charge us a higher price anyways.
My last complaint is that I don't get the pun. Maybe if you said Stewart was a dark horse on the trade market?
