Anyone notice that most everybody says that just about every game is poorly referreed? I don't disagree, but just sayin. Perhaps this is another reason the NHL doesn't grow. Even hockey enthusiasts can't understand the calls. How would a newcomer?

That's a reflection on the Red Wings offense, not on Jimmy Howard's play in goal. Nashville wins because of Pekka Rinne, the Red Wings win because of their firepower up front. There are very few, if any, starting NHL calibre goalies that wouldn't have the same number of wins as Jimmy with that talent in front of them on offense.

I'm glad some people get it. Thank you for not being a superficial retard when someone says "but he's got the most wins in the league". So ridiculous.

QFT.

I was a howard supporter last year. i thought he was great. I was hoping it wasn't just because other teams hadn't figured him out. YOu could make this case this year that that's precisely what's happened. Other teams studied howard, and now they know how to beat him. The Wings defense last year was not great either, but Howard was much better. This year the defense is about the same it seems, and Howard's numbers are terrible for being on a super power like the Red Wings.

If we had a proven solid goalie on this team this year I argue that that goalie would have even more wins.

For those saying the defense has hung him out to dry all year, that's just ridiculous. Take the game the other night where Howard got pulled on all 4 of those goals. Tell me which goal the defense left him 'out to dry' on? Howard gave up big rebounds, one of which he never even bothered to cover when it came right through the crease right by his stick. It made no sense. Howard is slow to get from post to post, he over-reacts on shots, and he rarely ever controls rebounds. This is not the making of a good goalie.

Now last year, I gave him the free pass. Even in the playoffs, I didn't care how many bad goals he let in. I just cared that he gained experience for this year. This year he does NOT get any passes from me. I've called him out this season, and if he does not elevate his game in the playoffs, then I will be calling for his head in the off season. There is no excuse. Now that he knows the speed of the NHL regular season versus playoffs, there's no excuse. It's time to become the goalie we need him to be, or start over with another goalie.

With that being said, I feel Howard does get the start in net for the beginning of the playoffs. This would typically be where I say if he doesn't measure up after a couple of games, he should be pulled and put Ozzie in and hope he can do the same as in prior playoff years. But I don't know what the answer would be this time. You can't throw in a pure rookie like MacDonald if Howard buckles. And what a shame, another entire season would be wasted.

I went to NHL.com and checked a couple stats for HOward.

His GAA is 2.79, which has improved slightly. But, he's still ranked 55th out of the 84 goalies that came up.

His save % was .908, which is 48th in the league. I'm sorry, but on a team like the Red Wings, a very sound team, very good team, these numbers are pathetic.

Those comparing Osgood to Howard, there's no comparison. Ozzie quarterbacked us to 2 cups, and I just don't think it's fair. Howard has done nothing yet. This playoff is make or break. I was behind Howard until 1/3 of the way through the season, and as of late I've really lost confidence in him. All 4 goals were absolutely pathetic. If howard lets in goals that are very difficult to stop or impossible, that's one thing. But every goal he let in yesterday was just pathetic. He is slow to get back to posts, he doesn't even attempt to control rebounds (a la 2 of the goals yesterday), he over-reacts to shots/passes...it's ridiculous.

I think he's rattled. I don't know if he sucks this much or if it's a mental game with him right now. I will forgive everything if he plays well in the playoffs, but I don't have much faith.

So Howard does one better than last time and keeps it down to one goal against, and we're STILL complaining about him? Yeah, he really sucks, doesn't he? I can't believe he let in that one whole soft goal. I mean, there's no reason he couldn't have got us a shutout so that the rest of the team could've taken the night off...what a lazy bum. Trade him.

LOL. And if the wings hadn't miraculously scored a goal by pure luck hit 2 edm players, the wings would have lost on arguably the worst goal Howard has given up this year.

Look at the big picture there pal. Howard has a horrid GAA and a horrid SV%.

I agree. If you want real hockey talk, go over to the hfboards. The hockey fans there are much more down to earth and its refreshing. I come here to discuss the games with fans of the team I love, but it seems here, too many red wings fans have brain damage.

Howard let in one bad goal. Hell, its a goal I let in probably once every two weeks. Anyway, he rebounds and plays solid, yet still gets the shaft. Just further proof of the lofty expectations that wings fans here have on their goalies. In order for a goalie to be great here, 3 of the 4 things must happen every game.

1. A shutout
2. No rebounds
3. Less than 1.50 GAA
4. Greater than a .945 Save Percentage

Print this out and circle the ones that are applicable. If you can't circle 3, he is a bad goalie and should be traded.

This is the most retarded post I've seen here in awhile.

First, don't compare yourself to Howard LOL. You're not an NHL goalie dude, so you are expected to let soft goals in. Second, Howard doesn't play solid. Howard has a horrible GAA. The real fact remains that the wings have not played well and have not been consistent at all over a long period of time, yet you're focused on a very lucky win yesterday, against the 3rd worst team in the league.

People would be singing a very different tune today if we hadn't gotten purely lucky at the end there, VERY DIFFERENT. It would have been a 1-0 loss on the worst goal Howard's ever given up, and people would have been down on the wings offense, and their continued lack of defense, and continued lack of 60 minute play.

IT WAS EDMONTON! Actually, it wasn't even Edmonton, it was the AHL Edmonton team. It was a joke that the wings couldn't score any goals against that team yesterday.

LOOK at the big picture.

Did the refs spend some time in Japan today before the game? Maybe that nuclear radiation is getting to them. WTF?

(Thoughts and prayers are with the folks over there that were affected, no disrespect intended)

Right. This team can still play great hockey, we saw it last week and when they won 5 straight. However that didn't stop people from bitching about s***

I'm not even sure we can call it great hockey. Great that they won, but the worrying sign is it takes them 4-5 goals a game to win 4-3 or 5-4. How many wins this year did they only allow 1-2 goals a game, or even 3? That's what I am extremely worried about for the playoffs. We won't be scoring 5 goals a game, we'll be scoring 3 or 4 at most, which means Howard has to keep a 2-2.5 goals against and I am not confident that is going to happen.

On the replay I saw the white ice. Still, it's frustrating when Homer gets called if he just farts into the blue paint.

I went absolutely Berzerk when I saw that goal stood, because of what you just said. Players breathe on a goalie and they call goals back, but that was so obvious that the player deliberately stood his ground and did not allow Howard to get over to make a stop. It was out in white area and I understand the rule, but it was just infuriating, because far less has been called back.

I hate the league refs. No wonder nobody watches the NHL. Average hockey fan out there would have seen that and said "how is that goal alloweD?"

I honestly don't know how players avoid taking their stick and wrapping it around a referee's head.

I think we are seeing a lot of what we have seen this season... the other team's goalie making great saves to keep his team in the game while ours is not. Every time Howard lets in a goal ppl say "oh but he had no chance" well it is the job of a goalie to make saves to keep his team in it... Leighton is doing that very well right now... impo when ozzie comes back Babs should get him going and if ozzie can get into ggear he is our best bet to win

Howard over-commited on every goal tonight. It's ridiculous. And this is coming from a Howard fan. He's really getting on my nerves lately though. Another 3+ goal game for Howard. It's getting ridiculous.

Can't say I don't absolutely love seeing the Pens dealing with all their troubles: injuries to whiny baby cindy and Malkin, amongst others. And, seeing them get beat up all over the place, and 9 goals scored on them. I love it.

#2115330 Isles vs Pens

Posted by Firehawk on 12 February 2011 - 09:39 AM

This was disgraceful... Why don't you watch what happened when Yzerman got leveled in a game. There was one response, Probert, Kocur, McCarty, etc would fight the player. Only one time face to face not this sucker punch stuff

full video of all the rough stuff
By the way I'm not defending the Penguins, this was just stupid. HUUUUUUUGE homer announcers... Same guys that said the Cooke hit wasn't a head shot. Talbot got what he had coming to him

I'm glad others have said it. People saying this was disgraceful made me refer to one of the most epic games in Wings history, Avs vs Wings March 26, 1997. How would that not be the same embarrassment? What would be the difference? McCarty and the rest of the team avenged the draper hit.

AND, McCarty sucker punched Lemieux but yet nobody called him a gutless turd...

I think these games like this, seeing bad blood boil over, are absolutely awesome to see. I am sick of all sports teams being buddy buddy with each other, like NBA teams giving love to each other after games, NFL the same thing. I don't want my team to like the opponent at all!

I dunno. I don't think this game was an embarrassment. I think hockey needs this stuff once in a while.

I hope we get shut out 6-0. That's usually the only way this snobbish team responds. What a joke. I love this team but I am so sick of seeing no complete games in the last 60 or so. We lost the cup to Pit because we felt we should have had it handed to us. That mentality has not left htis team. I am so sick of watching lackluster play. I'm tired of seeing the wings HAVE TO SCORE 4 goals minimum per game to win. I'm just tired of it. Where is the defense? Where's the fundamentals? Where's the basic hockey skills? This ain't a drop in game.
