#2610053 It's Official: Babcock to coach Maple Leafs

Posted by wings_fanatic on 25 May 2015 - 02:18 PM

After watching his goodbye to the media, I can say that Babcock is such a great person. Not only was he a great coach for us, for 10 years, but he was simply a good person. Everyone got so worked up about him taking too long, but if you were watching him, you could tell how upset he is to be leaving Detroit. He cared for these players, he acknowledged that players like Nick, Pav and Hank were a huge reason for his success. He talked about how the organization is set up for tons of backup plans, he talked about how he has been spoiled, about how his kids have grown up here and how they are now moving away for school. The guy is just good and any team in the league becomes better if he is the man in charge of the bench.

I have had the benefit of meeting Mike Babcock 3 separate times when the team I coached got to play at Joe Louis. Mike made it a point of his day to always come see the kids before their games (even while he was preparing for the Wings game). He would come in, introduce himself, talk to the kids about hockey, ask them what their favourite team was and so on. Just such a classy guy. Oddly enough, for the kids who said their favourite team was the Leafs, Mike joked around and said he was 'sorry to hear' haha.

I wish he was coming back, but at the same time I embrace change and I look forward to Blash and seeing what he can do to get our team going a step further.

Just making a heads up for this youtube cast that has been going along for a while. Arthur Regner and Kevin Allen discuss all things Red Wings, usually for over an hour a time. I was astounded at the low watch numbers. I do recommend the show.

I am in no way affiliated with their show, just think some here would like it. Anyway, here goes:

I love watching this everytime it is on. Both have them have inside info on the Red Wings and they discuss things that the normal media is afraid to discuss such as Jimmy Howard vs. Petr Mrazek (when the problem first began and was being ignored), and they speculate based on accurate sources and such. All in all I enjoy watching it and I just feel like they are completely honest unlike most media. I as well suggest them to anyone who likes the Red Wings.

#2609479 Dylan Larkin turning pro... will play for GR immediately

Posted by wings_fanatic on 21 May 2015 - 02:42 PM

I disagree. I think this is a special player we have and we have an opportunity to let him play a couple seasons on the same team as Pavel Datsyuk, much like Pav got to play with Stevie and Shanny. Let Larkin player and learn from Pav.

I really liked that Kenny talked about not being happy about the early playoffs exits the past few years. For that reason he said that's why he didn't want to sign babs to more than 5 years which is an excellent point.

#2605134 Who is the coach next season?

Posted by wings_fanatic on 30 April 2015 - 04:39 PM

Well said. Everyone has a shelf life and I believe Babs has reached his in Detroit. It is extremely unusual for a head coach to not have a new deal in place at the end of the season, which tells me he is gone on July 1 (or whenever his contract officially expires).

I recall babs making comments about our D core last year after Boston series and everyone loved it. This to me is babs calling out Kenny for not doing enough. Babs is a smart guy. He's not insulting pav and hank he is speaking the truth. They r aging and Kenny needs to have a good off season. This was babs calling on that. I still say babs is back here next year.

#2602559 ECQF Game 6 GDT : Lightning 5 at Red Wings 2 - Series Tied 3-3

Aside from the fact that you can't tell the future, I'm not saying that Howard should start game 7, it's too late for that. But Howard at the top of his game (which he was at for most of the year) is better and more consistent overall that Mrazek, who has had two very bad games in this series. He won three games, yes, you're not all knowing so you can't say that Howard would not have also won the games.

Completely agreed. That doesn't mean I think Mrazek should be playing over Howard.

What series have you been watching? Mrazek has played better in this series than Jimmy has played in any series. Keep in mind Jimmy also had Lidstrom and raFi for a few seasons as well. Mrazek has been our best player and was not the reason we lost last night at all.

The wings have lots of energy this game which is good. I felt they were nervous in the 1st and you could tell with their zone time and their shooting. They are trying to be too fancy and are making one too many passes. They just got to keep things simple by getting pucks at bishop and going to the net. I expect they will come out in the 2nd calmed down and do a better job of that.

NBCSN  showed a replay of Mrazek making a save off a deflection near the end of the game. How quickly he reacted to grab it with his glove was one thing, but the replay showed how his face and his eyes were tracking it so calmly the entire time. He is just solidifying his role as starter for many years to come. I mean this is the best a goalie has played for us in a series since Chris Osgood in 2009.

#2600237 ECQF : (8) Pittsburgh Penguins vs. (1) New York Rangers

Posted by wings_fanatic on 25 April 2015 - 01:41 PM

Babcock to the Pens it is.  His man-crush for Crosby is no secret, he's been making subtle digs about the lack of high end talent on the Wings for several years.  I can't see him turning down the chance to coach Crosby and Malkin whilst they're still in their 20s.

Or maybe he would rather go to Edmonton and coach McDavid for many years. Or maybe the laughs. Or maybe Anaheim if they fail to go deep.

Lots of maybes. I still say babcock stays with detroit. His home is here he likes it here.

Anyway glad to see the crybaby out again.

My big problem with Holland is that he doesn't acquire players until they are past their prime. Weiss, Cole, hell even Bertuzzi would have been GREAT pickups had they happened 5 years sooner than they did. Instead we get the player that is about 50% of what they once were and preparing for "life after hockey".
My thought is that Holland needs to identify assets READY to rise and pick them up before they blow up. I know, every GM wants that, but he's better than the rest of them, isn't he?

The reason for that is because he doesn't have to give much up to get them. Trading for Bert when he was in his prime would have cost us a lot because he was arguably the best power forward in the league at that point in time. Kenny adds them past their prime because they still have the skill and can be used to enhance the level of depth that we have. Ideally had we not gotten so many injuries between 2010 and 2012 our team could have made a push for another cup.

Veterans help you win the big games. That's why Kenny makes the moves.

#2596552 Abdelkader to return for Game 3

Posted by wings_fanatic on 19 April 2015 - 09:18 AM

I'd keep pav with zetty because zetty just doesn't look good enough to center his own line. Switch helm to center and have THREE good scoring lines and the solid 4th line.

Zetty-Pav-abby
Nyqyist-helm-ta tar
Weiss-shehan-jurco
4th line.

I think these lines would make the team much better. Nyquist and tatar both looked a lot better creating chances together. Shehan hasn't got it done well enough so drop him to the 3rd line to make that line better and put helm in his place.

Anyone calling to play Jimmy in game 3 has no understanding of hockey. Petr won us game 1 and had zero chance on the goals tonight. The first one was deflected then hit the post and was a scramble, the 2nd one was a crazy bounce, the 3rd one was a guy all alone and the 4th one was a breakaway after there should have been a penalty. No way is this game Petes fault. If anything you might play Jimmy in the 3rd simply to rest petr for game 3.

Tatar and Nyquist have to be better. I thought they would be fired up to prove themselves after last year, but it's the same s*** as last year against the B's.

Have you been watching this game? They have generated quite a few chances and are skating a lot better. Tampa is getting all the bounces right now.

Tatar actually looks like he has some jump tonight I dunno why everyone is on his case again.

I don't wanna split up pav and hank but the kid line looks off. I rly wish babs would try Weiss at center.

jurco-sheahan-tatar
Anderson-weiss-Nyquist

I think that little change would make both the 2nd and 3rd lines better.

Overall the wings are playing a decent road game. It's far from perfect but the team is blocking shots, doing a good job of keeping Tampa to the outside, and helping petr clear any loose pucks and obviously petr looks fantastic.

I think the wings got to just start putting everything on net rather than just try to wait for the perfect chance.

1 more period let's go boys! !
