#2574434 Is Jimmy Our Playoff Goalie?

Posted by wings_fanatic on 24 February 2015 - 05:37 PM

This is such a debatable issue and, for good reason. There are those who support Jimmy and simply cannot understand why fans hate on him so much and then, on the flip side, there seem to be those who want Jimmy gone. Me- I am kind of in between. In the 2013 playoffs there is no doubt that Jimmy was a big reason for the Wings success. I mean we nearly made it to the conference finals. Jimmy has the ability to steal us games, see Chicago for instance. There is no doubt he is a good goalie. But what separates him from guys like Lunquivst, like it or not, is that he doesn't win the games that matter.

He has been our starter in the playoffs since 2010. Since then we have not made it past the 2nd round. Lets look at the playoffs since 2010:

2010: Lost in the 2nd round to the Sharks in 5 games. If memory serves me correctly, we were dominating game 3 of this series until Jimmy let it an awful goal by Heatly and we ended up losing that game and ultimately the series In that series, he let in quite a few soft goals.

2011: Lost in the 2nd round to the Sharks in 7 games. Jimmy was significantly better in these playoffs and cannot be faulted for losing this series We simply did not have enough guys going.

2012: 1st round loss to Nashville in 5 games. Embarssing series by the entire team. Unfortunate that this was Nick Lidstrom's last season. Jimmy was not very good as with the rest of the team.

Note for these 3 seasons, JImmy had excellent Dmen and still never got past the second round, like it or not he didn't.

2013: 2nd round loss to the Hawks in 7 games. Great playoffs by Jimmy.

2014: 1st round loss to Boston in 5 games. Jimmy did not play much, but was good in game 1 but was not good in game 2.

Now it is hard to assess on Jimmy in last year's playoffs but I can say I felt much more confident with Gus in net. As I said, I don't dislike Jimmy. He is a good goalie- not great. He is a team player, he never complains and is not afraid to get rough. All good qualities. BUT, he has never gotten us past the 2nd round in 4 years like it or not. Now I am not saying we need to get rid of him. But what I am saying is that I think this is going to be an important playoffs for him. Not necessarily whether we win the Cup or not but if he gives up bad goals at bad times, then I think the team might look at changes down the road. I am not basing this off of his last couple games because he just came back from injury and we all know he is far better than that. Realistically, however, this is a very important playoffs for Jimmy Howard in my opinion.

What an unbelievable game. When a team wins like this, when you know they did not play anywhere near their best, were missing a top 4 dman, missed their captain for the 3rd, you know they are a good team. I cannot say enough about Mike Babcock. Whoever said earlier that they hope we have a new coach next year, this is why you are totally incorreect. Mike Babcock is the best coach in the world. His ability to instil confidence in his players is unreal. The players believe they are going to win. When the team is down, the players believe they are going to come back and they do.

Yah they did not play a good game at all. But in the end, Pav stepped up, Kronners stepped up, Tatar stepped up, Abby stepped up. Leaders. Our team has so many good things and I just love watching them and am excited for the playoffs because I believe in this team.

I don't think Montreal is that great of a team. They are AS good as price but I think in a 7 game series we would come out over price. I don't like nyquust with pav at all in fact neither top line had chemistry tonight. I much prefer tats with pav. ID like jurco to get time playing with pav and tats as well.

Smith and pavs entire line was fantastic tonight. I thought zestys line was slow tonight. Howard wasn't great but finished strong.

I am happy with our D what I would like to see us add is a big hitting forward to replace Anderson. I think that is one element that we are missing and could really use that for the playoffs.

#2563350 Could the Wings be better off trading Pav & Hank for draft picks?

Save this thread for April 1st.

Not too worried about this game. I knew it would be a sloppy game because every time we come back east from a west coast trip the team is sloppy. The game isn't over and one thing I've learned this season is to not count out our team, but they simply look like they do after all their west coast trips

Okay first period, but I still feel some of the lines need to change. Z and Goose just seem to have no chemistry together anymore for many games now. Shake up the top lines and put Pav and Hank together because the team is still lacking energy from its forwards.

Z- Pav- Abby

Nyqyuist- Shehan- Tatar

Franzen- Helm- Jurco

I think these are much better lines for the team to find some much needed energy and offense.

Kronwall is inconsistent and when our best puck mover is not playing well we get skated into the ground like the last couple games. Cutting down on turnovers and moving the puck out of our zone quickly makes us a much better defensive team

Kronwall is inconsistent and when our best puck mover is not playing well we get skated into the ground like the last couple games. Cutting down on turnovers and moving the puck out of our zone quickly makes us a much better defensive team. Our weakness has been turnovers against hard forechecking teams. Yandle cuts that down drastically and imagine being able to counter attack a hard forecheck. Something we never do. We haven't scored an even strength goal in 3 games

Kronwall is VERY underrated by some of Red Wings fans. He is not Nick Lidstrom, but he is still a good, reliable number 1 and, more than that, is a good leader for this team. I would take Kronners over Yandle any day of the week. The wings will never make that trade proposed and would only tradde the likes of those guys if they were getting Shea Weber. So don't worry about that. If anything, I think a trade for Mike Green would be best for us. We would not give up nearly as much and would be adding a solid offensive dman to our team and who is right handed shot. That could go a long way to determine the extent of our playoff success.

#2556289 Jimmy sucks in a shootout Howard

Posted by wings_fanatic on 12 December 2014 - 10:21 PM

What an awful game. Just flat out awful. Our D were AWFUL at outlet passes tonight and that just threw our game off. Please someone tell me WHY KINDL IS STILL ON THIS TEAM?!?!?!

Franzen invisible again tonight, at least zetty looked a lot better i thought.

Florida got a LOT of puck luck tonight. The puck always seemed to bounce towards their sticks and such. The Refs were awful. Florida got away with a lot of interferene and holding, a clear high stick on zetty, a hook on helm while he was in all alone.

All in all, it was just an awful game and I will happily take the 1 point and hopefully the wings go into toronto tomorrow night and destroy them.

Also, Jimmy needs to be taken out for shootouts. He just can't make saves and players are scoring on him too easily.

I thought this was one of the best games we played. In a playoffs series if we play like that against the leafs they cannot compete with us and I truly believe we are a much better team than they are. The shootout sucks and jimmy sucks at the shootout but our forwards also suck at scoring on breakaways. They are trying too hard gotta keep it simple like pav did last night.

The way the wings played reminded me of 2007-2009 teams we had. When we lost, a lot of the time we actually outplayed the other team and deserved the win. I love this years team and am not worried at all.

Great win by the Wings. They were flying in the 1st, began to step back too much in the 2nd, paid for it at the start of the 3rd. But, they got through it, worked hard and started taking over the game again and controlled the last 15 or so minutes of the game. Our best players were the best players on the ice. Pav and Hank just work soooooo well together. When they are able to play together I don't care what anyone says, they are the best line in hockey. The problem is making them continue to be able to work together.

The kid line was fantastic tonight. By far their best game of the season. Keep them together. Gus and Tats have chemistry together that is working.

One thing is for sure. LA is a Very good team. They were missing key players and still battled hard and pushed the Wings for a bit there. Having said that, I really liked the way the Red Wings played against a great team. I don;t know where Franzen comes in because I do not want the top 2 lines touched and I like the 3rd line as well. Gotta love when you have tough decisions like that.

Not a well played game tonight, but the leaders stepped up and the team started skating in the 3rd and were much better. Babs hopefully keeps these lines moving forward because things are getting done when Pav and Hank are together and the kids even started skating better too. The highlight of thegame for me? Brendan Smith on the PP! Did anyone else notice that Smitty shot the puck 3 or 4 times in that short amount of time? That is what our PP is lacking and that is what Smith can bring the PP so PLAY HIM!
