Not only is he a rookie in his first playoffs, he's a rookie playing on the 2nd pairing when he should reallly be playing on the 3rd pairing due to our lack of defensive depth. And as if that wasn't enough, he's playing against a Blackhawks 2nd line that would be a 1st line on 1/2 of the teams in the NHL.
So yeah, rookie defenceman, playing against all-stars. 1st period flub apart he had a solid game.
Welcome to modern sports journalism. I was going to say modern US sports journalism, but alas this kind of cheap, unintelligent, childish, completely-lacking-in-insight trash has spread over the pond Its the same kind of journalism that produces the Team Win = They're Great! Team Lose = THEY SUCK! FIRE EVERYONE mentality.
Someone mentioned Woody Paige, and they're spot on, its exactly the same kind of playground writing that he spouted (and which lest we forget, Detroit sportswriters joined in with). If a blackhawks fan came on here and started posting stuff like that they'd be banned as a troll and rightfully so.
On Cleary, the fact that he scored on "flukes" wasn't flukey at all. He was doing exactly what he should be doing: going to the net and being in the right place at the right time. I'll grant you that his body is breaking down some, however, he is EXACTLY the type of guy I want playing for us right now. He knows his role, he digs and works harder than anyone else on the ice every single shift, and has been to a few rodeos before... oh, and he's scoring. Grit, determination, hard work and experience. That sounds like a playoff warrior to me. He's playing beyond what his body should allow at this point, showing the kids how it's supposed to be done, and that's beyond admirable.
Well said, aside from his 5 points, there were a fair few other goals we scored this series where Cleary was screening the goalie and didn't get an assist. And as was pointed out in the game 7 GDT he was talking a lot to the rookies on the bench too.
Sure the guys's body is breaking down, but why is it breaking down? Because this MAN has put his body on the line time after time after time for this team. Cleary is going to suffer for the rest of his life for what he has put his body through, a little more gratitude and respect from certain keyboard warriors would not be out of place, instead of the graceless, thankless running out of town that seems de rigeur.
Come back to me when Z stops with the blind backhand passes in his own zone, when Flip stops with the drop passes to the Ducks behind his own net, and when Smith and Quincey show that they're physically capable of controlling a puck with their stick.
Because right now we are gifting the Ducks most of their chances. Easily 2/3 of their goals are off Wings turnovers.
Its quite simple Detroit - I'm not ready to shave my beard yet. I've suffered through the first 2 weeks of the "itchy" stage, and there are only 2 forms of relief - progressing to the second round, and shaving.
