#2298247 Johan Franzen wants to 'have more fun'

Posted by Nev on 30 April 2012 - 11:31 AM

Isn't the point that he scored 29 goals and led the team in goal scoring?

I think it points more to a lack of goalscorers on our team that we think 29 goals is a big deal.

And shouldn't Bertuzzi's goal totals be a bit better considering? His goal scoring has been pretty constant the past few years before even coming back to Detroit. In fact the only thing that has really improved is his +/-.

Bertuzzi is 37 and a shell of his former self, who generally tries as hard as his old bones will let him, and plays and acts like he actually gives a damn.

Datsyuk helps, but it isn't like Franzen would only score 10 goals without the guy.

You reckon? A broken down Cleary (equivalent to a no-effort Franzen) with no real playmaking talent alongside him got what, 11 goals?

Besides, I think the entire issue with the blame game is Franzen shouldn't be counted on to lead this team offensively. Holland sure has the cap hit to sign a bonafide scorer and allow Franzen the ability to be a damn good complimentary player.

You may have a point, but whether he is playing in the role of top-line sniper with the elite playmaker feeding him the puck, or 3rd line big-body with the hands to score some goals, he still has to put the effort in!!!!!! His production isn't the problem. His role isn't the problem. His complete lack of effort, lack of accountablity and lack of shame is.

Sorry, are you trying to use Hossa to show that people do not unreasonably scapegoat players when we lose?

We had a good playoff that year, but we did lose. Certainly once we went up 3-2 in the finals we expected to win, and the dissapointment was every bit as bad (or worse to some) than the losses since. Hossa did have a decent playoff (though below expectations), and people still use him (and Stuart) as scapegoats. That is exactly the type of thing I'm suggesting is happening to Franzen now.

And you really wish we had Hossa instead? An extra $1.3M cap hit, and a year longer...for fewer goals? How many points did Hossa score in the Blackhawk's first-round loss?

Franzen is a 30-goal scorer at a 30-goal scorer price (less actually, but fair when considering term, and especially considering we had to re-sign him at a high-value point). Sure he's 'soft', and plays too much on the perimeter. Just not nearly to the extent some people suggest. Expectations are too high, based pretty much solely on a few anomolies (Colorado series, 5 goal game...). But whatever, I'm not going to get into some big, pointless debate with people who are looking for someone to hate. You'll get over it or you wont. At least he's a player who matters, rather than the typical LGW 4th-liner/3rd-pairing/backup goalie whipping boy.

This "scapegoating" of Franzen isn't a new thing. People really started to notice his lack of effort in 2010-11. It had been apparent in some games the season before that, but last season was when it really became an issue.

Is he the only reason we lost? Of course not. But he is the most under-achieving, least effort-giving floater on this team. If he didn't have one of the hardest working, most insanely talented players you've ever seen on his line do you really think he still could have coasted his way to 29 goals?

What I find interesting is comparing Franzens comments to Babcocks.

Babs said in the Nashville series that Franzen needs to move his feet and use his body to be effective, and said "we talk about that. A lot." When asked about his lack of production in the series he responds angrily with "ask him"

Meanwhile Franzen says we have the players to win, but that he's bored and wants to have "more fun", leaving me wondering if this is a dig at Babcock being on his case all the time.

Whatever, I just want his lazy, floating ass and his terrible attitude out of here as I've already said not least to send a message to the rest of the team - phoning it in and relying on Datsyuk to do all your work will NOT be tolerated.

Thankyou for your time.

#2293091 Quenneville fined $10K

The NHL suspends Torres indefinitely which basically means they agree that the referees missed the call and it was a dirty play/hit. Go figure :!: So now Quenville is fined $10,000 for agreeing with Shanny and Dept of Player Safety.

#2292105 Time to start looking for a new coaching staff

Posted by Nev on 18 April 2012 - 09:46 AM

1) The roster has problems, we all know it, but Babs can only work with the hand he's dealt. I think its pretty obvious he's not happy with the roster as is. He always wants more size and toughness. He wanted a big upgrade at the deadline as he (quite rightly) felt this was our best chance since 2009. He's complained about Franzen not moving his feet or using his size.

2) Before the injuries, we were actually playing really well. Datsyuk and Howard were on fire - since they came back they've struggled to find form, fitness and confidence. We're missing Helm and Eaves which exposes our bottom 6 big style

3) Who is there available who is a better coach than Babcock? I want names people. Babcock is for me one of the top-5 coaches in the NHL. Who is available who could do a better job than him. Don't come here with your Hitchcock's and your Trotz's and your Tortorella's, we ain't gettting them.

4) Thats not to say I don't think some players aren't tuning him out - I think some are. But there will be roster turnover this summer, hopefully an infusion of youth and fresh faces will help - as some have made the comparison when we lost Lang, Schneider etc.

Apart from the puck not being there, leaving his feet, and shoulder to the head - clean hit!

Typical Wings. Don't show up for the first 30 minutes, spot the opposition a 2 goal lead. Decide to turn it up, miss 3 open nets and come up a goal short.

Forget the refs and the timekeepers, they're not the reason we lost.

#2283415 The Bettman SS

Posted by Nev on 12 April 2012 - 11:05 AM

Yup, cause Bettman was calling the games himself. I know he had a wireless transmitter radio and he was reporting down to the refs in both games on what they should call and how they should handle things. I guess the old addage is true here....

If your team is losing, blame the refs.
If its not the refs fault, blame Bettman.
If its in doubt, blame them both.

Did you not read the part where he said

For the record Im not blaming the refs for our loss,

Crymson might be the most rational predictable person on this board.

Fixed that for you :)

Not that he's not actually correct in this instance.

Now even Burke is piling on to the Pittsburgh hate! (sort of)

And he'll inevitably be fined.

And that's where you're going wrong Burkie - your Leafs suck, but they don't suck enough to grab all those lottery picks the Pens got themselves through fielding an AHL team for half a decade. 5 straight years they had a top-5 pick (Whitney, Fleury, Malkin, Staal, Crosby).

I'm just waiting for Kook to turn up, some of his 'shops last year were epic. His Datsyuk The Magician was my wallpaper for months.
