#2527616 UFA day looking up

Posted by Dabura on 01 July 2014 - 10:18 AM

The Boyle hate is hilarious. Our blue line generates no offense, can't break out of its zone, can't run an effective power play - but yeah, there's absolutely no reason why we should be interested in Rafalski-esque Dan Boyle. At the very least, he'd give as an actual power play. You know what would've helped our cause against the Bruins? An actual power play. You know what would've helped our cause against the Bruins? Better puck management, a stronger possession game. Boyle would help on those fronts.

Niskanen - he's worth overpaying, because the need is that great, because our blue line is that bad. You may overpay by a couple million, but you're getting what you need, which is a right-shooting power play quarterback in his prime who weighs 200 lbs and isn't afraid to throw his weight around. And with the cap going up every year, there's a good chance that it looks like a great deal in a couple years. We can't be too picky here.

If we don't add a high-end top-four defenseman, we have absolutely no shot at competing for the Cup. None whatsoever. We have Kronwall, two pretty good defensive defensemen, and Brendan Smith (who's 50/50 in re: whether he's going to put it together before he becomes a reclamation project). That's it. We'll be incredibly fortunate if any one of the kids ever becomes as good as Niskanen is now or even as good as Boyle is now. Talk about risk - going with the kids would be the ultimate risk, if money alone could get us a big name who could really help (and that happens to be the case here).

Get Niskanen or Boyle and we'll be a much better team.

#2519555 Will Mantha join GR after the QMJHL playoffs?

Datsyuk Zetterberg Mantha

Mantha will be on the roster before xmas, I'd give him a spot on Pav and Z's line getting him to learn what it takes from

the best 2 guys he could. They'll make him see what it takes to be the best and that its a 2 way game in Detroit.

The kid is just what this team needs a 6'5" 200lb+ scoring winger. Babs didn't travel all the way to Val'd or for nothing,

and from all accounts he liked what he saw.

We need a top line scorer, a top power forward, a shut down D man, a puck moving D man, a new starting goalie, multiple gritty bottom 6 forwards, a new coach, and a new GM.

If we do that will everyone be happy?

Why does anyone expect Alfie to be better? he played what 65 games this year and scored 17 goals. Finished the year looking really slow, wild shot-happens when your legs are gone, and a sore back. Now he will be a year older and you expect better? I have no doubt that Mantha right now could score 17+ goals on the RW's next year. It is the other parts of the game that he needs to develop, not his shooting/goal scoring.

Because maybe the fact that alfy was playing with nobody all year. Early in the year for the brief moment when he was playing with pavel and z he was great and it wasn't just because of pav and z (see the first Colorado game in Colorado this year). I want alfy back and I either want him riding shotgun with pav and z or down on the 4th with helm and Abby. That's just my opinion but I really still do believe the guy can contribute a lot for us

#2519723 So what do we have to trade?

Posted by Nev on 08 May 2014 - 11:54 AM

Ideally you should always try to trade from a position of strength to fill a position of weakness.

Our strengths?  Good young D prospects, and good young wingers (of the skilled but undersized variety).  We have SEVEN young D-men knocking on the door right now for maybe 2 spots in the next 5 years.  There isn't room for all of them, so we may as well flip them for something better.  Same at wing, unless we buy out Franzen and Weiss, and Alfie retires, and Mantha is a bust, there is just no place for Pulkinnen.

Our biggest weakness is a top-4 RHD.  There's a really interesting thread on HFBoards right now around trade proposals for a RHD to Detroit - unusually for HFBoards, its populated by sane fans of other teams making rational, reasoned proposals instead of the usual "Nyquist + Mantha + 1st for Edler" that wrecks the place.  Some examples:

Cody Franson for 3rd
Tatar + Ouellet for B. Schenn + L. Schenn
Pulkkinen + Ouellet for L. Schenn
Tatar + Ouellet + pick for Bogosian
Wideman for 3rd + Jensen
Wideman for 3rd + Nestasil
Byfuglin for Tatar + Ouellet
Byfuglin for Tatar + 1st
Niskanens rights for 3rd
Gardiner for Tatar + Frk
Shattenkirk for Nyquist
Jensen for 2nd
Wideman + 2nd for Mitch Callahan + 1st

None of these break the bank and upgrade the team.  To give one example - Tatar + Oullet for Byfuglin.  The loss of Tatar is easily replaced by Jurco and Mantha.  Losing Oullet only leaves us with Almquist, Backman, Marchenko, Sproul and Jensen - I mean, how will we cope with such a pitiful group of D prospects

That one trade leaves us with something like

Jurco - Datsyuk - Alfie

Nyquist - Zetterberg - Franzen

Abdelkader - Sheahan - Mantha

Miller - Helm - Glendening

Weiss

Kronwall - Smith

DeKeyser - Byfuglin

Ericsson - Marchenko/Backman

#2518504 Wings will buy out Tootoo, not Franzen.

Posted by DeGraa55 on 30 April 2014 - 11:24 PM

Oh yeah that fearsome power play where our point men hopelessly try for clappers from the point with absolutely nobody who can tip it in and bang it in the defenders shins 9 times out of 10

Yes that one.... you remembered! ;)

Is calling someone a clown really necessary?

Yes when what someone says is funny. Am I not allowed to laugh at what I believe to be a joke? Or if they put zero thought into something...

If you find that insulting well...I just don't know what to say to that.

So much hinges on Weiss it kills me. Its so hard to assess what we have right now. We may have a huge hole at 2C or a reliable 2C who knows...

Also I think Datsyuk should just do the surgery. I don't want this creeping in again next year.

#2517765 Was Legwand worth it?

Posted by lomekian on 27 April 2014 - 06:07 PM

If Legwand re-signs and gets used in a more appropriate manner by the coach its a good trade. If not we just about lost.

We needed a centre...and there weren't any others moving.

Much of the criticism or desire not to re-sign Legwand is on the assumption that Weiss will be back to 50+ points form next year, which is unlikely even if it does happen the year after. With Z's back playing up more often, a Centre who can contribute now is important, and the captain will be mostly playing wing from here on in I think.

Of course this comes down to how important you think the playoff streak is & how high you rate Jarnkrok.

For me the streak is massively important

1) The money - even our first round exit essentially pays for Legwand's annual salary

2) Marketing prestige.  The longest current playoff streak is a big thing.

3) Player prestige. Added to the lure of Dats & Z, and the new pipeline of kids, the willingness of a GM to trade away prospects/picks to ensure that you make the playoffs sends a message to FAs and current players. We are totally committed to giving ourselves a shot at the playoffs EVERY year. Most teams will rely on geography, quality of life or current roster levels to attract players. The Wings are one of a very small selection who will take risks to make the playoffs.

And of course, who knows what happens in the playoffs. Rask gets Howard Flu and Chara tweaks something and suddenly its a much more even series. Gotta buy a ticket etc.

Also, much as I like Jarnkrok, his value to us wasn't as great as we once thought. Another small playmaker in a team quite well stocked in 2 way playmakers, in a team desperate to get bigger, a desperation increased by the emergence of Tatar and Nyquist as two more small NHL quality forwards. I also think the leaps forward of AA & Janmark (gorgeous assist yesterday) made this trade more palatable. And if we draft a quality centerman this year or next, and Legwand re-signs Jarnkrok will have to get near his ceiling to make us really regret it.

Its like Adam Oates. He went on to have a great career. His departure freed up space for Feds, Primeau (who got us shanny) and Larianov. Indeed His demands for a raise at STL led to the merry go round that made Shanny possible.   We won 3 cups and he didn't....ultimately even the worst trade in wings history paved the way for the dynasty that followed.

Paid for my gf's new shoes today just to watch this game without disctraction so Wings proof me right please. I'm not expecting much just an honest 60 minutes effort.

Here's hoping, because the Wings definitely look like a team without a Captain.

Zetterberg-Datsyuk-Abby
Franzen-Legwand-Nyquist
Tatar-Sheahan-Jurco
Miller-Helm-Glendening

Yes please.

These lines for sure. Really want Jurco back on the kid line and Legwand playing more.

THE problem is that we've scored 2 goals in 3 games.  That's it ... right there folks.
