You must be getting up in arms about this since you've responded twice to me about this now telling me how ridiculous I'm being and how I should act and behave.

I got all day to go back and forth with you on this if you want.  I'd rather not though.

I understand we were in a very bad place last season, with so many injuries and in the bottom of the standings most of the season.  But the fact that Osgood played 23 games the entire season, most of which came prior to January and then only 5 the remainder of the season did not do him any good.  Babcock chose to go with Howard because he was doing very good, but anything could happen at anytime - you need a reliable backup goalie.  But if you're going to sit that backup for extended periods of time and then expect him to perform perfectly when you do need him, I think that is having unreasonable expectations.


I'm not saying we have to cater to him, he knows his role is as the backup goalie.  He's always had a great attitude about his role whatever that has been.  But if Babcock starts doing like he did last season and going with Howard simply because he's on a role, Osgood will get rusty.  People seem to expect goalies to be perfect all the time but none of us are perfect when we don't consistently work on what needs to be done.

i think the thing you have to remember is that osgood played his way out of the starter role. its not as if he was given no chance to play. and his poor play was one of the reasons that in the spring the team needed to ride jimmy so much; they needed the points. this year, he was put in 2 games early. that would have put him on pace for 20 games or so that a backup gets. last night was his 3rd start compared to jimmy with 5. so maybe we could stop playing the 'oh he never gets to play' card.

Yes I do.  Like that.  It's meant to poke fun and be dry humor and not be funny like a stand up comedian.  And I win because you got all up in arms with it.  Which means it could help to lighten up a bit.

well if i wanted humor i would turn on comedy central. (last nights daily show is actually on right now) but i happen to come to lgw to read others opinions about the wings and offer my own. i am pretty sure thats why roughly everyone comes here.

Until the Wings lose a game with them in net, then the box score fans will be out in force to declare one needs a certain save % per game in order to be a goalie in the NHL.

Oz could have played the breakaway a little better.. that was the only fault I saw. Nothing one could do about picking the corners as he was in position and can't take up 100% of the net, even at such an angle. I've never known Ozzie to be a good shootout tender, so wasn't surprising he didn't save that first breakaway, but he did save another breakaway afterwards. The main thing to ask is why the hell the defense keeps letting forwards behind them so far up ice. Ozzie is a convenient target for knee jerk reactions so I have little respect for the opinion of anyone who makes such early declarations that he needs to go. At best, they aren't very smart, at worst, they're crappy trolls.

you do realize someone can watch the games and still think osgood hasn't been playing well? quit stereotyping people. i have saw that little comment several times and its lame.



i actually love how there are all these posters that spend all day complaining about how bad other fans are for saying negative things. if you dont like whats being posted in a thread, stop reading it. despite what many of you think, its ok to think that players aren't doing well. if i think the 3rd line stinks right now, or that osgood is really falling apart, or kindl might not be so great, well thats my opinion. it doesn't mean i am a box score fan, it doesn't mean i am a bad fan; it just means i have an objective opinion about part of the wings roster.

anyone think that the game being on verses might have anything to do with the call?

Let the people watching ("national audience") see that they are taking hits to the head seriously?

as for the hit, 50/50 if it was dirty. i think the hit that happens at the start of the video is worse.

i seriously doubt the referees care who is televising the game. it was a questionable call that at game speed had to be made. even with super slow-mo replay, we still have people in this thread that feel its 100% dirty and others that feel its 100% clean. people all see it in different ways.

I heard yesterday that two of them got 6 games, including Mike "The Shoe Shiner" Milbury, and one of them got 8 games.  Who knows what it would be now...

milbury was on nhl live yesterday and when asked he said he thinks he would have at least gotten half a season and probably a full season in todays environment.

Let's remember its still October guys.  Lots of time to make corrections.  Those corrections do not include trading Hudler or moving Modano to the 4th line.  Mo still has his speed and a cannon shot.  Hudler hasn't been in the NHL for a couple years.  Cleary hasn't been great either, but he always gets off to slow starts.  Way too early to talk about breaking up the third line.

its a message board. we are here to discuss red wings issues. right now the 3rd line is not looking great. in another game or two we will be 10% through the season. when is it long enough to make changes? very few are advocating anything other than a slight mixup in lines. what is wrong with that? i would actually argue mike babcock doesn't think its too early as he already was pulling homer off that top PP unit in favor of cleary. all he was doing was shaking things up to help get guys going. thats pretty much all people in this thread are saying.

also, hudler missed all of 1 season. no need for exaggeration.

It's the fans job to irritate the opposing player. What would you think if after taunting a goalie by chanting his name he went ballistic? What is the difference? Words are words.

a fan pays money to see sports entertainment. they have no job. there is no 12th man in football or 7th man in hockey. fans can think they effect players, but 99% of the time they don't. and in that 1% they do, the effect is pretty minimal.

and i wouldn't really say rypien went ballistic either. he grabbed the dude, probably told him to stfu, and went on to the locker room. what rypien did was obviously a bad choice. but in my mind it was pretty harmless and hopefully will be quickly forgotten.

i think something over the line must have been said. these players deal with tons of belligerent fans every night. so i find it hard to believe the altercation was unprovoked. additionally, malhotra seems to have heard it too as he gestures that the fans should be tossed. bieksa seems very peeved and even smacks his stick on the glass at the folks 10 or 20 seconds later. it doesn't necessarily justify what rypien did, but i think lots of people are trying to play the poor innocent helpless fan card. and 99 times out of a 100, then fan gets whats comin to them.

I asked this in another thread before I saw this one but given Maltby is on a 2 way contract and 37 years old if he retires how does it affect our cap.

my understanding is that the only time the 35+ rule applies is if the player signed a multi-year contract. so if draper retired, we would be on the hook for his cap hit still; but with maltby, he only hits the cap when on the detroit roster.

hopefully someone can confirm/debunk it.

as far as that link you give, it makes me laugh reading. it gives all its benchmarks in reference to 56k connections. so i looked at the page source, it was made with frontpage version 3 which is frontpage 98. so you are looking at a website that is at least 10 years old. good luck with that though!

if you can afford it, get it.

i was able to get it for free last year due to the dispute between versus and directv. it was amazing. i was able to see most of the wings games (i did have to miss the ones on versus because of the fight) but i would say i was able to watch at least 75 games. most were in HD as well. there were a few times where i would have to watch the other feed and not get ken and mick, but that was pretty sparse. additionally, its really nice knowing that pretty much every night you can come home and turn on some hockey. as someone that loves watching any hockey, it would be nice to have it on as i was working on things. even it if was the thrashers and panthers, it was still hockey.

there are lots of ways to get it cheaper or free online, but IMO center ice is well worth it. even if you just want to watch wings games it only ends up being 2 bucks a game.
